Alright, so I need to get a nice and warm pair of work boots that I can also be fairly nimble in. I don't need hiking boots, and I don't want to look like a fudd. What do you guys wear? I've just been wearing an old pair of steel-toes, and it isn't cutting it with maneuverability and warmth. Pic related is the closest I could find to my current boots, albeit a newer version.

I already have a nice pair of hiking boots, but I don't want to wear them at work. And by fudd, I mean I don't want to wear shit that looks like this, aka straight outta boot boots

Boots or trail runners? Heel support, toe protection, waterproofness or flexibility, reduced weight, breathability?
14 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Trail runners for a thru hike.
Boots for just about everything else except day hikes.
>>

Watching this with interest. Walked some of the GR5 for a week in the Alps last summer. I thought boots were necessary there because it was sharp rocks underfoot for much of the way. But I did find them hard to air out - they got very moist by the 5th day. And it didn't even rain. We were doing about 12-15km a day with 9-10kg packs. Those boots were throw away at the end, but had done almost a decade of service. So were cost effective.

I wear trail runners most days as I must walk about 10km per workday, and they are more comfortable than boots by a large margin.

I think if I am doing grassy trails rather than rock, I might try trail runners instead of boots. But make sure it's appropriate to conditions I think.

Any bow hunters here? Been thinking about trying it over using a rifle or shotgun. Looking for any pros/cons or general information for a beginner.
41 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
I hunt with traditional bows (recurve and longbow). If you start on traditionals, compounds seem like using a gun. I can defiantly group better with a compound, but it's not as fast or as fun.
>>
If you are just trying to kill animals, you can't beat a firearm. You can shoot hundreds of yards with a scoped rifle. You can shoot out to maybe a hundred yards with a good shotgun. A compound bow is a great tool for forty yards and in, and a traditional bow is about a twenty yard weapon (in general).

To be a bowhunter, you have to love the concept and the method...or perhaps want to hunt in an area that is bow only. For those of us who love it, we wouldn't have it any other way.

As far as tips, your need to ask more specific questions. Saying tell me about bowhunting is like saying tell me about fishing, cooking, art, or anything else....there is just so much, for a format like this.
>>
>>958909

This post is BS.

If you want to be ethical use a compound bow -- I see too many of these Robin Hood Hipsters running around in the forest maiming animals.

Crossbow is like using a gun, a compound bow is still extremely challenging yet a superior hunting tool when compared to a traditional bow -- Acurracy, Speed and Power -- Compound wins and so does the animal you are trying to harvest.

Any good recommendations? Ideally looking for the following features

-Withstand constant and sometimes strong wind
-Rain fly that isn't the equivalent of a g-string
-Lots of air flow/windows/mesh
-2 doors would be nice
-Simple set up
-Not going to cost me a kidney in $$$

I've made some pretty cheap and shitty tents work and survive more than one 3 day excursion at a beach, but having one that would hold up for a year and not be a janky POS would be nice.

Trying to plan a walking tour of the Aviemore/Cairngorms/Spey region. Anyone have experience doing this?

Basics: hoping to do 4-5 days in mid- to late-June, no camping (coming from the U.S.), preferably stay in B&Bs and inns, visit a few distilleries, etc.

The initial idea would be to start in Aviemore, head down to Loch an Eilein, then somehow over to Tomintoul and on to Glenlivet. I'd like to avoid backtracking, but I'm not seeing anyway to avoid this.

Any suggestions? Anything I'm missing?

Nice plan :) Cairngorm national park is pretty awesome. If you stick to the low ground it'll be pretty simple too, though not the most exciting.

I'd recommend the Larig Ghru if you're prepared to break your no-camping rule for a night. It takes you deep into the heart of the Cairngorms without pushing into anything too nasty. There's a bothy in the centre but at that time of year so you might not be able to fit in (literally), easy camp though. Good boots, kit and navigation are all you'll need really.

For planning the Scotways book and OS maps are your friends. Walkhighlands.co.uk is aimed more at mountaineering but it's worth a look.

Have an awesome trip :)

>>
>>955279
its a skill. you get better over time.

if you are going with people and you are in the front once everyone catches up to you thats when you should start "timing" your break. if you wat for someone to catch up and just start walking again as soon as they get to you all you are going to do is further the gap. you may feel like you are losing time but it will add up as gains on the back end. let the straggler take as much time as they need (not want). maybe after they are done let them set pace for a little bit.

Looking to hunt coyote in southern Ontario, have access to tonnes of crown land and a few pieces of forested private land

Any tips for bringing em in? I gather camo and wind conciousness are critical.

You picked the right time of year.
Set up a ground blind on the forested edge of a lake, place an electronic call (distressed rabbit is great) with attached decoy out on the ice, you can use a scent attractant too but it's not necessary.

You will have easy pickings and clear shots over the ice.

Bonne chance Canadabro

There are a bunch of Chinese manufacturers selling cheap rugged smartphones. Nomu, AGM, Blackview, Crosscall, Ulefone. Anyone try them out? They have all the features like waterproof, freezeproof, glove mode, and sunlight readable screens. Obviously the reliability is questionable when you have a cheap chink phone... but my iPhone is shit for outdoors stuff.

Where is that anon who posted the long video telling when to use which lures in what conditions? Anybody else ever watch it? Should we keep it in the OP? Otherwise we could get a list of Youtube vids and put them in the Pastebin or keep a couple important ones in the OP.

>Hey spaniards it's wild camping allowed there?
No, you can't just go and camp wherever you want. You can only camp in places designated by the local government of every autonomous community(kinda like the states in the USA, every one has it's own laws and stuff) or in campings.

AFAIK at least in Valencia you are allowed to sleep in the while, as in no tent, leave no trash nor/minimum traces you where there and only between sunset and sunrise. Also absolutely no fire in the wild.

>what are the best trails in Spain to be away from people?

ideally: experience
a lot of it is trial and error. luckily some of my closest /out/ friends have different approaches and are in different tax brackets, so when we go out we get to compare functionality

other than that: reviews (always read before buying), forums, and ray mears type shows.

i do more research than most, but my strategy all along has been to buy the cheap version and see where it breaks/is uncomfortable so i know what to spend the money on the expensive version
