Is this a good buy /out/?

I live in New England and used to do a bunch of camping as a kid with my family, sometimes innawoods and sometimes at campgrounds, but its been a while and I want to get back into it.

I don't plan on being a hardcore /out/ist or anything, I probably wouldn't do anything more than 1 or 2 nights, also not trying to spend TOO much money.

TL;DR: Are these good buys for a summertime New England novice level camper for a couple days

Dunno. There appears to be about 2,000 people on that site that bought them and have an opinion.

Disregard the 5 star reveiws. They are shills or tards.
Disregard the 1 star reveiws. They are competitors or tards.
Read the 2-4 star reveiws. They are still tards, but they know they are tards.

I dont know much about the two brands. I looked up the tent and it looks pretty nice. Has the things I look for in a backpacking tent.
Free standing, full rainfly, usable vestibule, and not to heavy.
Here is a suggestion. The lynx 2 man twnt is only $10 more and roughly 1lb heavier. You will appreciate the extra room.
I dont know much about teton sports but I do have experience with High Sierra packs. They are of good quality and around same price, if not cheaper.
The Titan 55 is the same size as the teton 3400 is $10 cheaper and weighs about a pound less. It also comes with a pack cover (for when it rains).

Appreciate the advice. I'm not super experienced with backpacking shit out so I wasn't really sure how much weight would be good. Do these packs have a way to secure my tent to the bag or do I just have to nigrig it myself?

Figured, im thinking about moving out to Utah and becoming an instructor, I'm already one here, but I've heard Utah skiers are better in general

In the States? Utah, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming (as meme as Jackson is, it's a great place to ski).

The elevations are high and the moisture content is low.

If you want "learn to ski anything" experience, though, Alyeska in Girdwood, AK. Everything from powder to concrete on one mountain.

This a copy pasta of my thread in k; I'm planning on going innawoods and i font want to fuck my back over in the long term, so I'm putting a good amount of money to my pack. Pic related is the pack I've got my eyes set on but half k is a lot of money. I've been told Hill People Gear and Mystery Ranch are good, and not as expensive to the point that I can find some on ebay. Any tips? I only want to buy a pack once in my life so I'm set on this pack being worth every cent it costs. Thanks!

1. leave your comfort-zone, go outside instead of odering your desired backpack on the internet
2. go to a store which supposedly has your desired backpack. there is also the possibility to check the stores stock beforehand via phone.
3. handle the desired backpack, try it on
4. buy it or don't buy it
>>
Probably depends on what you're doing innawoods. If you're hunting and need to carry a gun, you're going to want a different pack than for regular backpacking.

How good is your other gear? I ask because cheap gear is often heavier and packs larger so you would need a bigger pack. I carry a 50L pack for overnights and weekends, but it's mostly unfilled with compression straps clinching up the excess. During winter that same pack is filled up quite a bit more.

If you want a good, reliable, and affordable pack I always recommend a kelty redwing 50. They're awesome for the price. Sometimes as low as $65 for the old model (new model has a couple extra features).

A lot of people love their osprey packs. I tried out one of their atmos AG packs and I didn't like the AG suspension. The hip belt just felt odd to me, but others swear by it. The exos 58 will probably be my next pack. It's lighter, and has a different suspenion.

Gregory makes nice packs as well. They can be slightly more expensive, but they are excellent quality.

If you are going lighter weight, ULA makes amazing packs. They're geared more towards people who aren't carrying as much weight, as they typically have a max weight of 40 lbs or less, and a recommended base weight well under 20 lbs.

Therm-a-rest neoair xlite - anybody got any /out/ experience with one?

They ain't exactly cheap but they certainly fit the bill when it comes to being easy to carry.

Thing is I saw one earlier today and was concerned if I didn't shave then I'd probably puncture it with the bristles on my chin.

Is it tougher than it looks? Main use would be on UK mountains, all seasons, tarp, bivvy setup.

Also general sleeping pad thread. What you got?

Regardless, should we make this a /fly/ general? I'm headed to NE Iowa, in the Driftless Region, in exactly one month for some spring fishing and I'm wondering what flies I should bring. Any suggestions? I've mostly done warmwater species so the trout should be fun for me.

Avoid memes. Go for a classic shape that will be good at classic knife work. No serrated edges because then you can't sharpen the damn thing again. No sharp spine since you want to be albe to press your thump against it.
Full tang for strenght.

ESEE 3HM if anything.

Resist the urge to get large knives - they're far less useful, than a more reasonably sized blade.

Esee are indeed very good quality, but you want a knife that's somwhere between 3 inches, and 4.5 inches tops - anything more is going to be too unwieldy.

Some options to consider:

Skookum bush tool
LT Wright genesis
LT Wright Lagom
Esee 3HM (modified handle)
Esee RB3
Helle Temagami
Numerous woodlore variants like this one here: http://www.tlim.net/602.php

Some general specs:

4'' straight back, drop point, or spear point blade (including kephart).
1/8'' thick
high carbon steel (A2, O1, 3V, 1.2235, 52100, 5160, 1095 or similar)
Simple, comfortable handle with no guard, and no finger grooves, or other "pseudo-ergonomic" features.

If you are comfortable with it, you can go as low as a 3'' blade, and 3/32'' thick.

The only caveat here is that for camping, you might want a 4-5'' blade for slicing food, but you can just get a $10 mora, or an appropriately-sized Opinel for that.

Pic related (2nd from the left) is the general style of knife you want. I could also recomment the jessmuk (great knife), but only if you don't mind spending $235+ (the other options I mentioned will run you anywhere from around 80 bucks, to about 170).
>>
>>959412
depends on what you mean by "sharp spine".

If you mean double edged, then heck no - a single edge is what you want. But what is generally known as a "sharpened spine" is more like an ice skate, and you want that to strike a ferro rod, or to clear bark, etc.

And pressing your thumb on it isn't a problem, but you should avoid swedges, since that's where you would press with your other thumb sometimes.
