What's the best /out/ shit on Amazon? I've got a $500 gift card and want to use it to begin my /out/ hobby.

Assume that I'm starting out with nothing and that my goal is to camp out of my car for a while and go hiking in the North Carolina area.

Any of y'all record sounds while out? if so, what do you use?
I want to start recording ambient sounds, just to collect them. Looking to get a simple recorder-shotgun mic-combo to carry around in some backpack and whip out whenever.

(pic unrelated, I have no images in this computer other than wallpapers)

I do. I use a Samson GoMic with my laptop or my phone. Far from ideal but gets the job done til I upgrade. What do you do with the recordings?
>>
>>923142
What do you plan on upgrading to?
I see it as scrapbooking, but slightly less embarrassing.
A friend and I were thinking, also, about using construction-site sounds and stuff to do music.

Tascam DR-05 sounds really good for the price (got mine for a little less than $70). Stereo too, so that's nice. And I never notice it when I strap to my bag.

I'm currently planning on not owning a home anytime soon, but rather be at the mercy of the earth.

Does anybody have experience with combining a backpack and tent into a single pack?

I'd like to just travel far and sleep wherever I want in it, while keeping my belongings. I'd rather not carry around a lot of stuff as it'd be a weight burden for me.

The only thing I can really find is pic related: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/111493935/freestyle-bivypack-the-backpack-that-turns-into-a

Tent in backpack.. so there is no room left for eh just stuff, like food, nice comfy blanky, a stove, your guns, hobo knife, and can collection.

Just don't.. Sometimes combinations are not made for a reason, like the tent/backpack.
Get a nice backpack and some basic stuff, and use your backpack as a pillow so your stuff is safe.

What for? Just to gaze at?

Planning a trip to Rocky Mountain NP this May.

The two of us are experienced hikers and outdoorsmen, we plan on hitting multiple trails and camping at various locations within an 8 or 9 day period.

Any recommendations as far as trails go? We'd prefer destinations that are less populated by other hikers.

Also, can you get away with venturing off the trail and camping where you want? From what I understand off-trail camping isn't allowed, but I feel like people do it all the time and it would be easy to do without getting in trouble.

Any other advice would be really appreciated.

I live in Boulder and get the parks pass every year.

They are hard-asses about off-trail camping at RMNP. The upside is that there is tons and tons of National Forest and BLM land all around RMNP that doing dispersed camping not far outside the park is totally viable. Especially if you mostly hang out near Grand Lake or go a little ways South of Estes on the Peak-to-Peak Highway. Fuck it, you should just drive the Peak-to-Peak all the way to Nederland (be sure to visit the carousel) and then go down into Boulder and/or make the drive back to Lyons.

In May, the lower areas of the park will be chilly at night, but otherwise very nice. Trail Ridge is often closed until first or second week of June because there will be still 6 feet of snow, but you can ask about that at the gate when you get there.

The East side of the park is definitely the busiest. West is not as busy, especially if Trail Ridge is still closed and you have to drive all the way around to the Grand Lake entrance. Ouzel Falls is a hidden gem of the park and you can't get there from the main park areas. You have to get there via poorly-marked turn-offs for the Indian Peaks wilderness along the Peak-to-Peak. When leaving Estes on 7, if you get to the three-way intersection where 7 goes down to Lyons and 72 continues on to Nederland, then you missed the turn-off about a mile previously.

Its a no fire, no leave the trail park.

>>

Would you recommend the Arapaho National Forest then? Ever been there? Ideally we're looking for a place that we can hike in, camp (with an open fire), fish, explore, etc.

Hey /out/ swinging over from /k/ as I think you guys may be more knowledge on this.

I'm putting together a BoB and I've come across the issue of food. What is a good way to make a home made MRE?

I'm thinking:
>Same level of calories
>More compact/lightweight
>Good nutrition, not a sodium infused cluster fuck
>Reasonably priced in comparison to a $22 MRE

Does anyone have any suggestions of like full MRE level meals rather than just the PB and trail mix.

A carrybob or a carbob?
>>
Get a food dehydrator. Make crockpot meals like chili or even an omelet and dehydrate it, rehydrate on the trail. For breakfast mre I do a veggie omelet dehydrated, a coffee blend (pre portioned coffee, dry creamer, and sugar,) cereal (granola, powdered milk, and freeze dried blueverries) maybe some Gatorade too. Just add water!
>>
>>956129
Better in every way without making any concessions will be hard especially if you don't already have a vacuum sealing machine or dehydrator.

My advice for a 3 days Bob, either spend the damn money or stuff your bag with 3 days worth of a mix of clif bar & tuna salad, it will get you to the fema camp just right.

Where do casual campers shop for gear?

While I don't plan on actually backpacking anytime soon, I still need a tent and sleeping bags for the gf and I when we check out the local national parks over spring break.

Is Goodwill and/or the Salvation Army a popular choice or should I shell out the cash on Amazon for new equipment?

Existing in a colder atmosphere weakens your immune system and increases the odds of you actually getting sick. Of course, if there's no cold or flu virus lurking around your life, you won't get sick just from going into the cold.
But if there is, being cold increases your symptoms because your body's immune system is weaker.

Muh odds. Muh chaos theory. Muh spoopy science.
