Where is that anon who posted the long video telling when to use which lures in what conditions? Anybody else ever watch it? Should we keep it in the OP? Otherwise we could get a list of Youtube vids and put them in the Pastebin or keep a couple important ones in the OP.

>fixed spool
You mean spinning reel? Generally, yes. They are easier to use, reliable, and you can cast lighter baits and lures with them as long as you run light enough line.

If you are going to fish that trout place, the smaller lures will be really tough to cast on something like that Black Max combo. Reels like the Black Max are best suited for bass lures and other baits around 1/4oz-1oz (so 7g+ up to 30g).

Baitcasters are great and all but a little more complicated to use and not as versitile. A 30 or 3000 size spinning reel on a M rod and 6lb-10lb mono line will work for most freshwater species.

I was gonna get this rod maybe, at the 7ft and 10-35g range

https://www.fishingmegastore.com/abu-garcia-cardinal-s-fixed-spool-reel~21426.html?&filter_sortby=price+asc
And this reel with FD30 which i'm guessing is what you mean by a 30 size spinning reel

D'you think these are a good combo?

On the memecasters, you have 3 knobs that you are always adjusting while you only have one on a spinning reel.

So that rod would be the 5718, right? I'm gussing that's their MH. I think the 5717 is more of a M. I would probably go with the 7' 5g-18g (5717) if you think you will be at that trout place and going for lots of 1/2lb up to 3lb-4lb fish.

Other than that, all looks solid.

Pic related is kinda for reference. It's an Abu Garcia rod and this is a real common freshwater size to go for anything from small perch and crappie up to 5lb+ bass. 1/8oz-1/2oz is like 3.5g-14g and covers most lures you would use to target those fish aside from big heavy baits.

You decide on line yet? Is it in KG there? Because 6lb-10lb monofilament would be good for that reel. 6lb better for lighter trout baits and 10lb for carp or bigger guys. 8lb is a good all around weight and line is fairly cheap so if you want to swap it for a different weight in the future, shouldn't be more than £5-£10. Just don't cheap out on the line. Get a decent brand like Trilene, Suffix, P-Line, Stren, etc. if you buy shitty line, you will regret trying to save the £2 when you lose a nice fish.

>>957727
And pic related is the line I would go with. The 330yds will fill that reel at least twice which will be good if you ever lose a lot of line or you want to put fresh line in at the beginning of next season. You normally want to change monofilament line minimum at the beginning of each year or more often if you fish a lot. UV rays from sunlight, being in and out of the water all the time, and just little scrapes and shit can weaken it over time.
>>
>>957732
Haven't really decided on a line yet, was mainly hoping to sort out the rod and reel first, looking though I found this one that looks decent, would I be fine just going with 8lb since you said it's good all around?

Lel you're trying to buy in spring too.

>>957736
>>957738
Yeah you should be good with all of that. From there you have to think about bair and tackle which is another project. I always recommend starting with whatever live bait is popular or if you go for carp, whatever dough bait or bread or corn. That way you can just get some assorted Aberdeen hooks, split shots (weights), and bobbers and be on your way. Get comfortable with everything else, find the good spots, talk to other local fisherman, see what they are catching, and then you can start thinking about some lures if you want.

Did you buy a bulk pack? That shit is nice when they have em in the sizes you need. Dick's did "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" on Gamakatsus a few times and I grabbed a bunch of 3/0 and 4/0 EWG hooks.

Bass Pro actually has decent prices on their store brand hooks and sells like 25pks, but in store they always have them in sizes you don't need so you are forced to pay more for the 5pks of hooks. They do it on purpose, same thing with weights. They don't sell the 99¢ packs of Gremlin bullet weights so instead you are forced to buy their $7 painted ones.

Yeah but new anons not even sure if they will stick with the fishin, I'm not going to tell em to drop $30 on a spool of PowerPro. Plus that anon was in the UK and everything was overpriced so a 300yd spool of PowerPro probably would've been the equivalent of $75 at least.

>>957825
That other website he found was actually pretty good with the prices. I'm of the opinion that when you pick up a hobby, even if you aren't sure if you will stick with it, it's still a good idea to not get the cheapest garbage out there. If anon gets that Abu rod and reel, at least he will have something that works properly and won't be embarassed using it. And if it doesn't become a big hobby he can throw it in the closer and if a friend wants to go fishin 5 years latwe he will still have something that works and if he doesn't ever use it again he's only out £60.

That's like the Yo-Zuri 3DB's and the X-Raps have a similar deep color look to them. Whether or not they will always work better than a regular flat color, who knows. But both of those baits seem to work well so I'm sure it will outfish the other ones in the right conditions.

The fuck is Jarvis Walker anyway? Ugly Stik isn't even a real brand, and if it were it should be much lower than Abu and Daiwa. And Rapala doesn't even make rods and reels.

>>957853
Nah that was just a joke. Way too much money. I don't know how they ask so much. It's all Pure Fishing which is world wide so there has to be a distributor in the UK selling the stuff for reasonable prices. Amazon is just fucked with certain stuff and it's better off buying from a real retailer.

>>957855
The website he found was actually decent tho. It's all in £ instead of $ so it's a little more expensive, but it looked like a $40 reel in the US was going for £30-£35 on that website and that doesn't seem bad at all.

Went fishing today.

Me and a friend, both sorta noobs, fished the gazebo that sits ontop of the pond.
We hardly get any bites an only pull up a few.
This older gent comes in with an ice rod and starts picking up crappie like its nothing, using tiny gulp shiners and a trout magnet hook, vs our crappie tubes on 1/16 jigs.

Somehow the difference between the small jigs was a big factor- he catches at least 20 all around the gazebo.

Only problem is artificial lures get expensive really quick. Best bet is to start out with worms and stuff with regular Aberdeen hooks. That way you can at least find the good spots, learn what fish are in there, see what other people are using, and get comfortable with casting and hook sets and knots and all that shit.

When you git gud at that, you can think about lures. You gotta know what fish are in there before you start grabbing a ton of lures.

When you want to start throwing some lures, pic related would be a good starting place. From left to right, you have jigheads and soft plastics, Rapala-type stick baits, and inline spinners (Rooster Tail, Mepps). Those three baits you can find in all sorts of sizes and colors to target any type of predator fish. They are also fairly easy to use and hook fish with.
>>
>>957928
Damn, how small are those things? Those are awsome looking jigheads. Nice that they are a bit longer too so they probably won't nose dive as fast.

There's nothing wrong with them. The only time I've seen them break is because of accidents or neglect. Same with all rods actually. The only problems I've had with them is that they sometimes get stuck in the open position or while you are fighting a fish, one section will collapse. There's a balance between too tight and not tight enough when you extend it. On some models, lining up the eyes takes a while because of that problem with tightness.

Shimano is a mixed bag. Some of their stuff is fantastic - tranx was a revolution, stellas are pricey but lifetime buys. Their lower end stuff is absolute shit though. Shimano rods are shit.

For freshwater lews reels and Powell rods win in dollar for dollar comparisons.

For saltwater cal star and avet.

Accurate is also fantastic but god damn they cost a lot.

The action and active working helps a lot man. You can fish those plastics a bunch of different ways and you never gut hook fish that way. If you move around fishing them in different spots you have a better chance than sitting in one spot with live night crawlers.

Go buy some stik-o worms or senkos and weightless fish them with a gamagatsu ewg size 4/0 hook.

Get some in watermelon red flake color, junebug, black and blue, and red, and pumpkin with a chartreuse green tail tip.

You must have hit a good post spawn bite. Spinners would have killed then too or chatterbaits.

I lost a lot of lures that day because I only had 15lbs line. I switched to worms because they were less expensive and smaller bass were hitting those. "The one that got away" took 3 lures on its own.

Even if the big guys are hunkered down in the middle of the lake where you can't get to them, there will still be something you can get to. And if you get the right bait and presentation, you should get em.

That's the shit where a Texas-rigged Junebug finesse worm will normally get em.

>>
id like to go out today but its windy as fuck, and the lake id be fishing the wind always comes from the shittyest angles
>>
>>958263
Yeah I noticed that after I posted the pic. I'm guessing with that fish that he didn't have the bait in his mouth the whole way when I set the hook or on the retrieve he shook it out of his mouth and got caught again there. IIRC it was actually the side of the eye, not through the eyeball and he swam away fine.

>>958287
That's how it is erryday for me. And it sucks because the wind is coming off the ocean to the east and I always fish in the afternoon so whenever I'm trying to cast with the wind, the sun is right in my face. Depending what I'm using, I mostly prefer to cast directly into the wind rather than having a crosswind. Casting straight into the wind with Texas rigs and other baits will help them run deeper and keep em down. Sometimes with a strong wind at your back, it almost works like a wing and lifts up on the line so a spinnerbait that would run 3'-4' deep with no wind is running like 18" deep.
>>
>>958290
id rather go directly in he wind then crosswind too,
i might go pillage a golf course pond for tadpoles etc to use as bait

Daily reminder that fishing is a meme.

There is no rhyme or reason to fishing. Fishing is not a skill.

It is 100% pure luck.

>Water clarity
>Season
>Spawn
>Post Spawn
>Pre spawn
>Fish feeding?
>If so, in deep or shallows?
>Fish can see you and won't bite
>Fish can here your vibrations when you're too loud
>Color selection
>Lure selection (out of 1000's of possibilities)
>Can fish see my line?
>Reel selection
>Rod selection
>Too sunny?
>Too cloudy?
>Rainy?
>Rained recently?
>Early in the morning
>Late in the evening
>Got to cast in the right "pocket"
>Last but not least...are the fish biting?

100 percent luck. No need to waste your money. Buy a cheap reel and rod and livebait. You have as much chance as anyone.

I can take my wifes son fishing and he will do just as well as Bill Dance or Rob Van Dam.

You have to buy new livebait every time though, and add in the time spent getting the bait and carrying around a bucket full of water and baitfish.

The cheapest option would be to have a bare bones assortment of cheap lures (1 rooster tail, pack of curly grubs & jigheads, pack of yum dingers, 1 kastmaster, 1 rebel floater) and only replace what you snag.

As for a cheap rod and reel, if I'm going to spend a few hours casting and a few minutes catching fish, I'd like to have a rod and reel that look and feel good to use.

Idk the Mojo Bass and Mojo Inshore or whatever are supposed to be really nice. Those Johnny Morris rods are light as a feather but errybody loves the Abu rods. Veritas 2.0 for $65 is great but goddamn I scope those Veracity rods with the clearance tag every time I see them. If nobody buys them, they will probably go 50% off and go real quick. If I worked there, I would hide that shit in the back until they mark it down more.

Big retailers always do that shit. I worked at Petsmart and they would keep marking stuff down to 1¢ after a couple years so we would find random shit in the back and sometimes if it were aquari stuff I would buy it whether or not I needed it.

So since it's not from a regulated industry and it lives in the wild and can encounter parasites from any source it's more likely to get you sick....you understand that right?

Fish encounter all sorts of food sources and gain parasitic infection from multiple sources. Even if they are not the target host the parasites can or may cyst up in the flesh waiting for the fish to be ingested by its primary host which could be a mammal....soooo yeah.

But sure, dat ain't store bought sonny gud stuff

I just fell for the braid meme. Should I just tie directly to the spool with an arbor knot, or use mono backing? I also read some shit about using masking tape or electrical tape for something. What's the deal with that?
>>
>>958920
You should go buy a new reel first. Get a Pflueger President, it will have these rubber strips on the spool that grip the braid.

Seriously tho, I wouldn't tie the braid right to that spool, good chance it will slip with a heavy load. A little strip of electrical tape around the spool before the braid or a mono backing will both work.
>>
>>958920
Arbor knot plus a few hitch knots. If there's no knurl on the spool, make some with a scratch awl or put some electrical/duct tape on the spool first. Otherwise, the entire roll of line may start sliding around the spool

Mono is for the leader not the backing.

Picked up a couple used Abu Ambassadeur 5400C4s a while back. Any recommendations for cheap rod for bass fishing with them?
>>
>>958920
Those other posts basically covered it but absolutely electrical tape on the spool 1st since there is no rubber banding on that one.
Arbor knot
No need or mono backing on that spool. A lot o people will back large reels with mono becuase it's far cheaper than spooling 100% braid. I have 20 or 30# mono backing 40 or 50# braid on a few of my higher capacity reels.

Pepsi just doesn't like those shakepeares. I've got a few and haven't had 1 fail me yet. It wouldn't be my 1st choice in a reel either but they're not total trash. I only use it targeting trout/perch though.

Those Ugly Stik GX2 reels are just fucking plastic and feel so shitty. It would be a $15 reel if they sold it apart from the combo. When you can get a Sienna, Cardinal SX, Pflueger Trion, or Okuma Stratus V for $30-$40, there's no reason to buy those Ugly Stik combos if you are going to use the thing more than once or twice before throwing it in the closet for 10yrs.

>>
>>959053
Bass Pro has a sale on em right now. Just remember with the soft baits, be careful mixing soft plastics because the colors can leach into eachother and sometimes certain soft plastics can actually melt when they are stored with others.

>>959059
Yeah I'm trying to stop people from buying those rods now if they actually want to fish lures. There is a lot of other stuff in the same price range with better action and sensitivity and if you spend $20 more you can get some bretty gud rods.

And I hope Gander Mtn stays open with Sports Authority going down and Bass Pro buying up Cabela's.

I think they're the Bass Pro brand ones. They work but some of the Plano boxes do have better latches. I never had problems with the cheap ones but I also don't keep em in a backpack so less risk of them popping open. I think Walmart is normally cheap for those flat boxes too, they have the 3600 Plano boxes with nice latches for $3-$4 IIRC. Only thing is you might have to modify them like I did with the Dremel if you want shit to fit better. I also have the boxes crammed full so I needed to cut them up a bit.

I was looking at those bait binders too, but they look better suited for throwing 4 or 5 of each bait into the little pages rather than the whole packages.

I don't really have issues with either, but the hinges seem solid and similar on most of them while some of the boxes have the real latches like the blue ones on top that are def more secure than the ones molded into the box on the bottom.

>>959081
Idk what exactly does it. Some rubber or silicone skirts on spinners or jigs can get fucked up. And then the little rubberbands I use to keep the hooks together on cranks, I bought a pack of these black ones and I think those are silicone and will melt next to soft bairs and then I bought a bag of red ones that are more natural or synthetic rubber and those are fine.

To get them to be soft they need to have a softer in it

Hey guys, me and my intrepid band of retards are all uni students who want to stop being pussys and start camping, hunting and fishing. We're starting by hitting up a few lakes in our areas (We're Ausfags by the way) and trying to catch and cook some stuff. We have a tonne of fishing line, hooks, sinkers and bait between us, but either no or few fishing poles (half of them are old ones our Dad's used 20 years ago, and are fucked).

What are our options here? Do we really need to go out and buy fishing poles? Or can we attach hooks to the fishing line and float it around hoping for a bite?

Any other options? Like traps or something?

We're willing to try anything.

There's not shit for peacocks in North Broward aside from out west right on the Sawgrass, but fishing those spots from shore suck. So it's pretty much just Weston and Miramar off like I-75 but those are all the manmade lakes with super clear water and those steep rocky dropoffs (so very little vegetation) and the fish are really picky.

I've heard of some spots a little closer to me like Coral Springs and I have found peacocks closer to Pompano, but the spots are normally overfished or something else wrong with them. I gotta get down to Dade more but it's a trek to go fish western Dade when I'm in Deerfield on the ocean.
>>
>>959449
In the parklamd area there are a few non pressured spots with peacocks not the biggest peas but definitely a good ammount. Caught some yesterday
>>
>>959461
Where u go in Parkland? I've done that canal along Loxtahatchee and that spot out there by the Everglades at the end but all I've gotten there are LMB and Mayans. I'm sure there's peacocks over there but I just hate fishing crowded places. Last time I was out there where Loxtahatchee Rd ends, I was with my lil bro fishing by the bridge and some family of spics comes right up on top of us with kids running everywhere and I just wanted to cross all their lines with 40lb braid and break it off.
>>
>>959355
Handline fishing is fun. I did that a lot when floating down rivers tubing. Just find something to wrap the line around. The wider the better for faster reeling up the line. Handline spools are what most people use.

>>959402
It really depends on what they are eating and what species of carp. Match the Hatch, even if the hatch is bread old people and tourists toss them. Lures for carp are typically worms like "Foam Trouser Worm". Live bait is of course actual worms. Carp are bottom feeders and eat mostly invertebrates and plants depending on cap species. Some people use a lure that looks like drifting algae, "Carp Scum Fly". Other species of carp will hammer small minnow-sized baitfish and lures imitating those.

Handlines, Handcaster same diff, more than enough for casual fishing. What rivers exactly are we talking about?
>>
>>959501
That's my one issue, it's such a long and inclusive video that it could either be really great or very misleading if you aren't fishing the same lakes as them. It's not an exact science, like nobody will suggest bright chartruese baits in clear water but some days that stuff works awesome for me at certain lakes.
>>
>>959515
I mean the general information should be the same for LMB regardless of where you are. Just put a little thing that says the video isn't gospel and to change it up when something isn't working.
>>
>>959501
It is correct for the most pare because it shows how to use a lure and specifically why that lure works the way it does from the fish's perspective.

>It's not an exact science

Actually, it is an exact science. That's why subsistence farmers are vastly different in their approach (both in lure/bait and methods) than sport fishermen.
