I don't know if this is the place to ask but over the last few months as I've gotten closer to my exit from the military I've been thinking about doing a 60mi week hike through land between the lakes, KY. The problem I have is my equipment "needs" come from what I've learned in the army. And as we all know the army loves to over pack and make things as difficult as possible. My question to fellow /out/ is what would you recommend. I'm not the tent kind of person been using a hammock for the last 5 years. So for backpack size, clothing, food. Just general things for a week of camping and hiking. The pack I do have for nights out is simple. Two tarps a simple ifak a life straw along with some dried foods. I haven't really given much thought to a portable stove. but it might be my best bet. I know nothing about them or what I should look for. Any information would be better then what I'm working with now.

This and some calorie-dense food is all you need. You'll probably want more, but the less you carry, the more you'll enjoy the trip.
White tube is fishing spindle, if those lakes have anything worth catching.
>>955992
The only thing I'd actually recommend adding is a small cook pot and an alcohol stove is you prefer hot meals, maybe another, thicker liner if you expect lower than 40F
Hey, out. A few friends of mine and I wanna start doing alpine tour in the alps above 4k meters. One of us has good experience in the field and will guide.
Now to my question/discussion:
What essential things do I need? Where can I save money and buy cheap stuff? What HAS to be high quality?
I have about 400-500€ at my disposal, but the less I spend, the better.
Also, which >4k in the swiss alps can you anons recommend for intermediate level mountaineers
Probably need a jacket
A pair of mountaineering boots will blow your entire budget.
>>954824
Yeah, forgot to mention I already have those and a harness aswell. A friend has the rope covered. Most important things I need are probably a hardshell jacket, ice pickaxe (or what it's called) and crampons

Anyone been here? Tagging along with some friends, gonna enjoy the 65f weather. Where to smoke dudeweedlmao?
>>953003
I'm going tomorrow anon. The main paths are ridiculous tourist garbage and it's always got this veneer of mall shopping feeling. But you can wander off the path and find some nice looking places. It's not great, but it's very pretty at times.
>>953003
One time my sister was camping there with some friends and there was another group of kids stayin near them and some dude from the other group jumped off a cliff and killed himself right in front of everybody.
So yeah, it's a good place for OP to commit sudoku.
All right, we had a short but sweet food thermos thread some months ago
post your food thermos and give a short review!
>>952713
I'll start with my Primus Trailbreak Lunch Jug
Pro's
- 19 OZ volume
- nice powder coating on the outside
- the lid seems substantial
- keeps soup warm to hot up to 7 hrs
cons
- a bit large at 17cm height (not 13 like
they say on the webpage)
- a bit heavy (350g) although I only
take it to college
Thermos 160z food jar
comes with a cute folding spoon
Haven't timed it but keeps stuff hotter longer than my old generic one (sometimes too hot)
Usually contains soup with a sausage sliced up into it.
Also a bit large and a bit heavy but they all are.
Well OP I guess we're the only two who actually go outside in the winter.
Post some comfy cabins, it's late for me and this is the first post i've made on this board. I love the outdoors, but I just cant get enough of cabins :D
Thats a cozy ass cabin.
I got access to my FiL's cabin on Lake Louise, AK and its tiny but 100yr old and baller as hell. Damn shame I don't live in that part of the state anymore, only get to roll out there once a year at best.
I live in one, or used to until a few weeks ago.
Parents built it in the 70s, the furnace is a giant oil/coal/wood furnace that cost about half the overall price of the house.
hey guys, has anyone here gone to Chile to explore it's forests or something like that? what would you recommend?
Chile is a very long country with different types of forests and a very diverse geography. Besides the obvious in Patagonia (Torres del Paine) there's a lot of other places. I'll help you.

I live in new england and I am planning to go camping soon with some friends in the woods. There is already a fair amount of snow on the ground and I don't really know whether or not we are going to get more, but I have never really done this in the winter so what kind of shit should I bring? What should I wear, sleeping bag, etc. Stuff that you would need to know for camping in the winter with snow on the ground. It isn't supposed to be super cold, only like 20-30 degrees btw. Thanks in advance, pic unrelated
>>952556
Sleeping on snow? Take two camping mats of your choice. With a sleeping bag rated to ten degrees lower than the lowest temperature you expect.
>>952580
How about clothes? Should I worry too much about what to wear? I've only heard to stay away from cotton
>>952556
If you use a tarp, be sure to also have a ground tarp. As the other anon said take two sleeping mats. Don't ever look to the "extreme" rating of your sleeping bag. Instead be sure that you are weel within the comfort zone. Use two sleeping bags if you don't have a big one.
You're right about staying away from cotton. This is because it dries very slowly and sucks ass when wet. However if you're just going to camp for a day or two there's no reason to spend a fortune on gear and clothing, just don't get soaked. Wear longjohns in either wool or synthetic (synthetic will begin to smell after some use), Then wear wool or fleece clothin next and finally something to block the wind. If temperatures stay below freezing then rain is not a concern so you could basically be wearing any kind of jacket. For pants I'd recomend something like polycotton (a lot of surplus and ski-clothing) or synhtetic - maybe waterproof - but be carefull if you're going to sit besides a fire with synthetic clothing.
Have fun OP.
Does anyone here run a outdoor blog. do you know of any good outdoor blogs?
>>952519
No, and maybe.
I want to, so this thread might be relevant.
First, what constitutes a "good" outdoor blog?

Anything goes worth reading. Good articles, new places to hike, outdoor skills.
And so I can promote my blog. I'm just starting out and I would love feedback.

I'd like to create a 4chan community based on the non degenerate parts of it. I'd like it to include memes (fitness programs based on SS, required reading in schools being meme /lit/ books, lots of thinkpads) although that's all just a pipe dream unless the basics are all said and done, setting up in the wild.
I'm thinking Alaska would be the ideal place for such as a community, and while there are some ideals I'd like the community to be based on everyone is free to do and own what they please. Alaska as the last frontier and the remoteness of it is the perfect place for outcasts to start over a grand civilization.
Even if this is just a pipe dream, I'd like to entertain the logistics of it. Starting a homestead with room to grow into a city in a period of 5 years time and sustaining a population of 100 initially.
What would be required for this to happen? What would need to be grown, what buildings will be needed. I ask for your expertise in this /out/.
Pic Unrelated
>>951754
Alaska would not be the best place for this community. Even if the buildings were set up and you at least had a camp, and even if you went during the spring time (24 hour sunlight days) you wouldn't have any time to prepare for winter or map out the area or even start the foundations for farming and livestock. Hell, you would also have to deal with the mud and mosquitoes from the tundras.
And I'm sure the Alaskan government wouldn't want a bunch of memers setting up camp in their neck of the woods. Even if we pulled off the impossible and started a community, in two years time they would force us out.
I think you would want to set up a commune. And maybe the best places for that would be New Hampshire/Vermont, Oregon, Wyoming or places on the Appalachian trail.
>cooking
you would need everyone to bring about $75 in food. My suggestions would be
white rice (20 lbs)
pinto beans (5lbs)
Tang (enough to make a gallon)
white sugar (10 lbs)
powdered milk (64oz)
canned carrots
canned pumpkin (not pie filling)
pinto beans
all purpose flour
vegetable shortening (5 lbs)
canned tuna
canned spinach
canned turnip, kale, mustard or collard greens
With the cans I would have at least 50 altogether with at least 10 of each. This food would give you enough food to start
>material
I don't know if bringing tons of wood to make shelters would help. I would start with sleeping bags, pads, and tarps. You need to find a source of revenue to sustain yourselves. Whether it be farming, factories, or sucking each others dicks, it is vital if you ever want it to expand and grow.
>Location
I would choose NH, because of muh guns and less laws. Unless the State of Jefferson happens, it is probably your best bet.

What are the laws on knife carrying in the UK? Are there any knives I can carry innawoods that the police wouldn't harass me for having?
Inb4 butter knife
In the woods you can technically carry any knife you want.
But it must be packed and stored out of reach when travelling.
https://www.gov.uk/buying-carrying-knives
>>958104 says it all. Basically as long as you aren't a black teen in the city you can carry whatever the hell you want. Also if the cops do stop you in the countryside don't be a dick, just make something up like you're a butcher.
Anybody here metal detect as a hobby? I'd like to get into it does anybody have any recommendations for a mid grade beginners metal detector
>>954061
Bought the cheapest kind I could find, works perectly.
Used it to find property markers. Then for scrap metal.
Before I can use it for park/beack treasure hunting, I need to buy headphones for it. The headphone plug is weird though, which makes it complicated.
>>954109
What kind do you have. And have you ever found any precious metals?
>>954109
>Bought the cheapest kind I could find, works perectly.
this
My $50 Radio Shack machine from the 80's regularly outperforms $4000 Minelabs and every other brand out there.
The price of the detector doesn't matter, it's how well you know it. How many hours you use it.
Has anyone here lived in a tent
Spent five months living in a 10x12 Bass pro tent in Alaska last year.
>>960593
10x12 inches?!
Didn't know they made tents for ants!
>>960586
I lived in a tent for six months to save rent moneys once.
at the end of my stay I abandoned the tent. That kind of stink doesn't wash out.
