Is the heyday of the submachine gun over? It seems all but outclassed in it's roles by assault rifles, PDWs, and SAWs.
I mean, in your grandfather's kind of wars you mostly had schmucks with rifles, and they needed a weapon for laying down fire and clearing out buildings, that's where the SMG came in, and it did the job well.
But then the world's brass/armorers learned from those wars and all of a sudden select fire, intermediate cartridge rifles became the vogue. They don't fare too bad in CQC, and for suppressive fire, why not have a light general purpose mg?
And nowadays your modern PDW, the concept of which has been around for nearly a century, outshines the submachine gun in the role of a compact personal machine pistol, though you could argue they're merely an extension/evolution of SMGs.
The only people who seem to have a niche for SMGs are special operators and law enforcement, and the latter has largely moved on to m4 carbines.
Of course, this is all relative to the country in question. Certainly in some nations the SMG is still fills a role where better firearms are not available.

I'd say it's Germany's age old problem - allying with nations that get them killed. Question for any LE /k/ommandos here;
A few years ago I was driving across Iowa with my wife and 4yo child. A State Trooper was headed the other direction and he turned around and pulled me over.
I handed him my CC permit and my DL, he said he was pulling me over because dark windows. Fair enough, I had just purchased this nice black 06 Yukon on eBay and it came from the south, it had window tint too dark on the front for Iowa and I was pushing my luck.
He looked at my CC permit and asked "do you have a firearm with you or in the vehicle" and I replied "yes it is on my person" and he asked me to get out of the vehicle and go back and sit in the front seat of his cruiser, we sat there for 20 min while my wife and child sat in my vehicle, and the officer asked for my pistol, I handed it to him and he sat there with it in his lap while looking up me and my vehicle.
After a while he let me go with a tint ticket.
Was he in the right to ask for my firearm and hold it during the stop? Why did he ask me to sit in the front seat of his vehicle?
