Does anyone know how far different bullets can penetrate through

A graph or something would be best.

To be really specific I was wondering what it would take to punch a hole through a one inch plate of Carbotanium. I heard it has roughly the same density as steel so I was trying to compare it with that.

>I know Carbotanium is insanely impracticable to use as armor.
>>
>>31149804
Another run fact: all bullets are not the same.

Two variables have to be accounted for op.

This. So many variables.
My 1/4in steel will stop steel core 54r and below, while I see lots of youtubers easily penetrating much thicker stuff with the same ammo.
762x39 won't even punch through my 1/8in stuff reliably. Only bullets like 545 going closer to 3000fps make it though by paper-punching with raw speed.
Then xm193 556 within 100 yards will absolutely melt through my thicker 1/4in stuff that steel core 54r won't begin penetrate.

where did you hear that stupid shit?

Lets say I wanted to kill someone wearing a 1in thick plate made of high quality steel (I know that's silly). What would it take?

Here are the variables you need to consider: steel thickness, steel hardness, angle of the steel, bullet weight, bullet type (steel core penetrators or just fmj), and bullet caliber.
>>
>>31150238
Under ~3000fps, probably something with enough power that it'd kill them with blunt force to organs before it'd ever penetrate.
Or else maybe just something with an extremely high velocity, as it seems to be steel's main weakness.
I sortof wonder how a rifle using hardened flechette rounds would work. You can really accelerate those those darts since they're so light, like 1/5th of normal bullet weight for the same gun.
>>
>>31150242
>angle of the steel
#1 killer of boolits, a little angle makes up for a lot of thickness.
>>
I am of course assuming most carbon-titanium alloys would be about the same strength of Carbotanium.

carbotanium is an extremely lightweight composite material it couldn't have the same density as steel even if you put actual steel in it.

That /tg/ thread is getting pretty /k/-esque.
>>
>>31150992
it might not be an issue of penetration so much as sheer concussive force 7.62 is a big round that carries a lot of umph. so even if x39 doesnt do it, maybe x51 or x54 are all it takes

im not too versed on carbontitanium BUT i do know titanium is very brittle, i cant imagine its any stronger when its made into a carbon grid.
>>
>>31151091
Good point. The concussive force would be even more problematic considering space marines have a solid plate of bone as opposed to a rib cage and aren't as squishy as we are. That would make impacts much worse.
>>
>>31150992
If an orc with a axe can kill them I don't think an ak would be that different
>>
>>31153490
Yeah, but orks have meme magic. They literally think it and make it so. If ork boyz think their axes are sharp and can cut through SPESS MEHREEN armor then they can.
>>

>Lets say I wanted to kill someone wearing a 1in thick plate made of high quality steel (I know that's silly). What would it take?
I have a feeling you're not actually concerned about dindus wearing an inch plate of steel on their chests, but whatever, I'm not going to presume or judge whatever TEOTWAWKI scenario you have in your head.

An inch of actual steel armor's kind of hard to punch through, you're nearing territory where small arms simply won't work anymore. An inch of steel armor will reliably stop M61 and M993, and the pinnacle of the .30 caliber infantry cartridges like the .30-06 M2 and 7.62x54R 7BZ3 won't even do it point-blank. An inch in metric is 25.4mm exact, it's the equivalent of light tank armor when those rounds were predominantly used and even the upper echelon of the .30 caliber cartridges won't be able to do it though the .338LM comes awfully close.

So up to .40 caliber, the .416 Barrett doesn't have an AP round I'm familiar with but given it's performance it should be able to do the job. Meanwhile AP rounds for the .408 Cheytac are available (rare, but available) and that particular cartridge actually exceeds the .50 BMG in certain aspects. Of course a regular .50 BMG M2 will also do the job, but armor piercing .408s do it better but they both have to be close. Now if you're worried about availability and prices obviously of these two rounds the .408 Cheytac is the more expensive and difficult to find and that's especially so for specialty rounds, it's an amazing precision long-range cartridge but it's not and will almost certainly never be more accessible than the venerated 12.7x99mm. Speaking of, the Russian 12.7x108mm B-32/BZT-44 has similar performance to M2 AP, but again for reliable penetration it needs to be close.

Now, dedicated anti-tank rifles will do the job with appropriate ammo, but they're all DDs so be mindful of that.

>Now, dedicated anti-tank rifles will do the job with appropriate ammo, but they're all DDs so be mindful of that.

There's a crazy Polish rifle that used a lengthened 8mm mauser round to kill tank crews with spalling rather than penetration. It's pretty fucking neat-o, it's also absurdly rare.

You could use the same basic idea and build a custom rifle around a wildcat that pushes a decent sized lead core bullet as fast as possible and you wouldn't have to penetrate OP's retarded armor to kill the guy wearing it.
>>
>>31154986
Here it is:

And here's the round it was built around:

Oh I am well aware of the Wz 35, I've actually been necking down .50BMG cartridges for a few years trying to get a .30 caliber bullet to do the same thing. After blowing up a few barrels I decided to stop trying to force it so hard and give it a boost when it's already moving.

I was going to make a thread here about the project but then I remembered /k/ is full of retards these days and doesn't understand railguns. There's always /sci/ but they're almost all morons pretending to be smart, so I really have no home to post without the thread going to shit.

Anti Material weapons.

.50 BMG
20mmAPDS

that kind of stuff. you could also hit them with a cannon.
>>
>>31154557
.375 chey TAC would be perfect for this with proper bullets
>>
>>31155067
That's pretty baller, and yeah it's sad that /k/ is basically just a consumerist circle jerk. There's very little actual knowledge being traded.
