Been looking around to see if there is a way to make a woodgas generator that is effective enough to give power for an entire household.

I have been prepping my cabin in case of something unknown in the far future and when there's a power shortage.
Been looking at power alternatives for a while but most of the common ones would not work here (not enough sun or wind, but a shit ton of trees)

Also I'm concerned with the fact that woodgas generators need a lot of maintenance and how to manage the carbon monoxide that it will be emitting.

hello /diy/

got a couple questions regarding the electronics for a "lightbox"

its basically used for revealing a positive in the screenprinting process, but the guy I had building it just took off and left me with this.

had previously made some lame double 500-watt halogen lamp work as my lamp box but i'm noticing the image is being shifted, so I decided to upgrade.

i'll post some pics of what the guy left and in turn I can help out anyone with any silkscreen Q's to the best of my abilities

thanks in advance

Anyone on /diy/ install surveillance cameras for a living or think they can help me out?

I bought this camera system and 4tb HDD.

I have it set up and It's working pretty well for a cheap ass system.

But I can't figure out how (if It's possible), I can get email alerts and also how easy is it for someone to watch me jerking off though my camera system?

I don't know much about surveillance cameras as you can see.

The DVR does not have a password (mostly because I haven't figured out how to change it yet), But my cloud account does and the monitoring app on my phone also has a password.

My DVR is connected to my router with an Ethernet cord.

How easy would it be for someone to log into my system and watch me jerk off or delete recordings, ect?

How do I protect myself?

I'm fairly certain this system has the ability to email me when there is motion and a few other things but I can't figure out how to do it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'll post the home menu of the DVR if that helps
This is the system I bought

Can you install a gas stove + oven in any room?

I already have another gas stove + oven in my kitchen.. would I need like.. to buy an extra propane.. container.. thing outside?

If I did, how much do those cost?

--Explanation--
My livestreaming studio is in my home basement, I do gaming content and cooking stuff too. I want to do way more cooking content, less gaming content.

what in the hell are you on about
>>
>>1125374
So there's a big gas container that sits outside, that the gas company fills every month.

I have zero clue what kind of gas it is, I assumed it was propane.

Would I need one more tank of gas outside to add another stove in my house?
>>
>>1125368
no, you need to kit the place out for ventilation, also exhaust hood that leads outside and in proper places e.g. not in the face of neighbours and at the top of the building etc, there are regulations for this

you cannot get it piped to anywhere you want, also because there are regulations about this sort of things

however if you use small scale table top portable gas stove, then it should not be a problem even in the basement

>big gas container that sits outside
you will need to add piping to a new stove, you dont need another tank, you will just use it up quicker

please help me unfuck my door

it's completely rusty and broken, the bottom hinge gave up like 5 months ago and now the middle one gave up too, so this is the current state of my door

The problem i have is that i want to replace the door, but the hinges are soldered to the frame, and the frame is embedded in the concrete wall, so the only way to get it out is to cut it, but i have no power tools to get it out, is there an easy way to replace the hinges and the door?

more details in pic related
32 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
If embedded hinges are still usable just remove the door and reuse the other half of the hinges on the new door. Otherwise your easiest option will probably be to cut off the existing hinges, grind down what's left to get nice flat metal and fillet weld a new hinge onto the frame.

I'm about to become a van dweller and want to prepare the interior for living by myself.

Now i didn't do electronics for a long time but i know how to hold a soldering iron, and i'm trying to high-level plan out how to 220v power the van. My current idea is to:

1. Add second (multiple ?) batteries. (do i have to upgrate the alternator ?)
2. Get a generic 1kW 12/220V inverter.
3. Monitor the batteries voltage and turn the engine on if needed to charge.

Now this plan has a shitload of unknown variables so i wanted to throw the ball around with you.

How do i calculate the parameters so i wont drain the batteries in
1 hour if i know i'm using X watts, maybe i can make some kind of "time left at current power usage".

How do I protect from over powering (using too much ampers, not a native speaker).

I imagine i would be using a mac charger once every couple hours (60W), some led lightning (20W ?), and once in a while some high power utility like a microwave or a heater (1kW).

I would be grateful for any tips and thoughts.

>once in a while some high power utility like a microwave or a heater (1kW).
at least triple the inverter (3+kW)
>>
>>112496
This is good advice.
Most electric tools draw way more power to start the motor than they do to run.

So a 800w drill may infact need up to 3.5kw to "start".
>>
>>1124965
>heater (1kW).
Heater is Bad Idea. Will such your batteries empty in no time and this will kill them. 12V*100Ah=1200Wh. You want to discharge your lead-acid batteries by just 50% to keep them alive. This gives 600Wh or 30min of 1kW. Plus losses. "It's cold, I'll heat for just a moment more" and the battery goes kaputt.

I have tons of wood and a Home Depot nearby. I need a bandsaw for word working but my apartment isn't big enough for a stationary one. Any tips?

rent a garage or studio to do it in or find a different thing to do at home.
>>
>>1124847
im sure your neighbours will love you using power tools in your tiny filling cabinet apartment complex.

what exactly do you want to do? you dont need a band saw. you can use a circular saw, jigsaw or scroll saw or a coping saw for anything a bandsaw can do. a bandsaw is just great for how fast it is. but since you live in an apartment, i dont think you'll be pumping out commercial quantities of large furniture.
>>

Portable bandsaw.

Clamp to table.

Hope it doesnt come loose and cut the shit out of you.

If it does get a finger cut off, sac up and get another.

2 fingers at 1st knuckle is disability.

So I was supposed to start a course in electrotechnology but they are filled up for this semester. Next semester starts in July.

I've got no job and a lot of time to kill between now and then. What are some good books to read up on to prepare myself?

My ultimate goal is to join medecins sans frontiers as an electrician who can repair anything; generators, water pumps, 4WDs, medical equipment, radios, computers. Anything that is needed in a field type scenario, similar to a medical hospital for the army.

I have no skills at the moment and I really need someone to point me in the right direction because I am so overwhelmed and no idea where to start.

Thank you in advance.

Well what field of electrotechnology are you planning to main, the electro- part (circuits, a bit of chips, electromagnetism and its uses in motors etc. ) Or the technology part (more practical, macroscopic parts, how they work together, machinery, devices and how they are built, mechanics)?
You said you wanna be able to repair stuff mostly, so I guess you'd be more interested in how parts work together and not how they themselves work, right?
>>
>>1124807
Try Millman and Halkias and Millman and Taub for electronic devices and power & control respectively.

Without you articulating what your objective is, it's all I can recommend.
>>
>>1124807

Perhaps instead of reading books to get prepared, try actually taking things and fixing them?

For me, I'm somewhat book smart. I can design and think critically about designing things, but when it comes to actually making/repairing I come up short on knowing the tools and techniques that it takes to make the build or repair.

So instead of reading books, buy a small motor and other equipment and open them up. Take a look at things physically and dick around with them. You might even try breaking things and then try to repair it. Sort of simulating something you think you might see in the real world that you'd have to fix.

Just a thought.

Just got an XBOX 360 wireless controller.

Without getting the wireless USB receiver, how do I use this for a windows 10 PC (Desktop - so no bluetooth or wifi)?

Is it even possible?
15 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
You have to pay another $15 for that receiver
>>
>>1124773
I think it will be recognized as a USB HID joypad if you just plug it in.
>>
>>1124773
I'm not much for /biz/ answers but that $10 receiver is a real good investment if you like 360 controllers.
Have used one for a long time now.

I'm planning on raising mealworms for entomophagy purposes. I've done some research on how to do it, but I have a couple concerns about scale and containment.

I was thinking of converting the set of drawers in pic related into my habitat, but I'm not sure if this is too big considering I only need to produce enough mealworms to use in two or meals a week for one person. Would something more like what's used in this video be a better size for my needs? https://youtu.be/XPxGV0M9epw

For containment, I was planning on putting velcro on the top rims of at least the drawers containing the beetles and the pupae and sticking screens on them. Will that be sufficient? I'd rather err on the side of caution because I live in an apartment so letting any beetles escape would be a no-no.
15 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
I raised them as treats for my pet chickens for a while. You'd better plan on more space than that for your fetish if you want an actual meals worth.

I used plastic tubs with holes punched in the lid for venting. Works well.
>>
>>1124679
How much space would you recommend? I'd be fine with producing anything from 200 to 500 grams of worms per week.
>>
>>1124681
FUUUCK. Way more than I raised. I suggest trying one test container, figuring out what produces most worms, then add containers until you reach desired output.

I ate a couple of mine. No taste, would be easy to eat in bulk.

Anything where impact/work surfaces are high carbon steel or above.

Diamond tipped tungsten is best.

You can use a power drill to make holes and fill those with dexpan, and wait then bust up the pieces with a sledge and cart away the rubble.

Or you can fill the holes with black powder or whatever.
