My grandmother recently gifted my fiancé and I a signet ring that belonged to my great-grandfather. The man obviously had shovel hands because it's rather large.
Her intention is that we use it for our wedding rings, but neither of us like full yellow gold rings. We've seen plenty of rings where yellow/white/rose gold all feature, but they're separate bands with obvious seams. Is there any particular reason why we couldn't have yellow gold sandwiched between two white gold bands without a seam?
>>1129623
novice jeweler here.
lots of rings have white gold seamlessly touching yellow gold. white gold is often used as a solder. look around the diamonds on some of your rings, you should see white gold.
>>1129632
That's good to know it's possibe, I've only ever seen the banded crap in the high street jewellers around me.
Is it a case of imagination is the limit with regards to how we can utilise the signet ring in a new piece?
>>1129635
>Is it a case of imagination is the limit with regards to how we can utilise the signet ring in a new piece?
you can copy the signet using wax moldings. a decent jeweler aught to be able to cut the signet off the larger ring and attach it to any think you want, so yes you can turn this ring into a new ring.
depending on how much gold is used in the ring, you may be able to melt down part of it and make a simple band for your wife.
This is a fuck up from me and me not researching enough on this, but I was trying to hang up this guitar mount and I made the holes too big and the mount itself is wobbling around, it's not secure to the wall at all.
What should I do here? Is there some kind of adhesive thing I can get? I don't think screwing new holes would fix anything and I wanna cover those holes up somehow. What's my course of action here? Thanks.
>>1129140
>What should I do here?
Google shit before you do it. Drywall will never hold that weight, neither will adhesives. you need to shoot for a beam.
Google how to patch a hole in drywall.
>>1129144
>To hang a fucking guitar.
lol, no, drywall can handle it just fine with anchors. OP just drilled the holes to big, and needs to now patch the holes in the wall, Redrill new holes with the CORRECT sized pilot holes, screw in new anchors, and he's done.
>>1129140
Larger anchors should do it. You might consider getting some molly bolts. If you find some that fit, you can use the holes you have.
Hey /diy/ i was wonder what guage square tubing whould be good for genral building ie tables, benches, things that take a hardcore bearing. Im thinging 16 gauge will be good. Whats yalls opnion? (Pic semi related its square tube)
>>1128075
Always go bigger ID instead of wall thickness. For more strength.
>>1128076
Im sorry, but what does that mean?
Also, what size would be good?
Hi,
Just moved to a pretty dangerous part of the city and was thinking of making one or these but I need some help. What kind of brackets are these? What type of wood and thickness would be best?
They look like metal brackets.
Thick wood is probably best.
That style is an open security bar holder with what looks like a 2x4. I'd recommend a closed security bar holder made of steel if you have enough space.
If you want security look into a police lock. It's basically a steel bar you secure to the door and the floor. To get past them, you have to destroy the door.
I am renovating a old house. I found a bunch of pic in the walls. Any idea what they are.
It seems like a weight for fishing wires maybe
>>1127025
Were they next to windows? Could be counter weights.
Thats a window weight. They're made of imitation crab wrapped in cardboard these days though.
>>1127025
Sash weights pretty normal to find old ones in the walls of houses that have had the Windows replaced
Hey boys doing some caulk work next week is this stuff OK for a small job or do I need a caulk gun and tube?
You know those tubes have coverage information right on the sides. Tells you how much to expect out of the tube.
>>1129983
>be op
>borderline retarded
>cannot make decisions
>must ask Mongolian lobster seasoning forum for help
>>1129983
You can buy a tube and gun for less than that shit
Hi /diy/, hu/g/e nerd here. Just built myself a desk from autonomous [dot] ai with a custom tabletop, since I\m living in europe and they can't ship the whole thing here.
Wanted to ask you, - what can I cover it up with in order to have the perfect feeling for an optical mouse
and to not clean it up too often? I was thinking about some vinyl sheets, but maybe you people know better.
Currently it's just raw wood. The dude in the store I bought it in advised me to paint it, but, first - I'm afraid I could mess it up, and second - painting is not easily reversible. I mean, if I don't like the feeling, I can't easily repaint it with something, because this means I'd have to sand it, buy paint again, spend another weekend on it - which is something I'd line to avoid.
Any ideas?
>>1129928
You should get a finish on the wood. What kind of wood is it?
Get one of those giant desk mats made out of the same cloth material as mouse pads. I'm sure you could get a custom one to cover your entire desk if you wanted. But as the other anon said, if you're not going to paint it you really should at least put a finish on it.
>>1129928
if you have the competence to paint something like that, you would be able to make a test board with test paints from the store.
large mouse pads exist for gun disassembly and are easily found.
Best solution is to finish it with stain and lacquer.
Hey /dyi/. Posting this here since I figure this board has the greatest concentration of Carpenters
I'm in a 'pre-apprentice' training program in N. California which is put on by various unions and the state. I'll be able to get my OSHA 10 and 40 cert. through them for free.
Problem is, it seems like they ONLY work with unions and I am not interested in working with a union at all.. family wants to get into home flipping so, no need for collective bargaining. Would rather just get hands on experience for 4 years instead of "climbing a latter".
What should I do? Complete this program, pick up as much training as possible and show up at smaller family operations and apply there? Show up to job sites?
why are you planning to approach smaller family operations or to show up at job sites if you don't need a union because your family wants to flip homes? do... do you know what a union is?
>>1129910
I need related experience. Unions here frown upon people taking side work in downtime and encourage unemployment insurance.
Believe it or not, even if my family has money to invest, they want me to prove myself to be worthy of their investment.
Explain to me why a Union would be "beneficial" for my work?
>>1129923
I live in Northern California. It's a 'weak unions' state and unions are somewhat uncommon outside of certain fields (government, teachers, health care, etc). It is no 'right to work' state, but it is further in that direction than other states. Some places, you don't even go to work. You show up at the union hall and the employer comes to you. There are plenty of places around here that are non-union. Almost all of the smaller operations are. See if you can find a place that does things like additions and renovations. Those are generally done one at a time by small crews. Don't show up somewhere where they are building a whole tract of houses or something.
Is this toxic?
I mean does it leave some toxic residue if applied in closed space.
No you can't huff it
>>1129373
>Is this toxic?
Do you live in California?
I'm rigging my boat and want to weigh everything I'm putting in it to do a moment diagram (calculate weight and balance).
Any recommendations on scales that have a pretty large platform yet are reasonably priced?
This looked interesting, until I saw the platform was only 10x10-inch.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0153I0418/
>budget: I'd rather it be below 100 USD, but if I have to go higher I will.
>accuracy: +/- 1lb
>max weight: ~400-lbs.
Have you thought about a hanging scale? Thats how people in the automotive field do what your doing with your boat. Just weigh everything with some fishing line or a calibrated basket. http://www.scalesgalore.com/DigiWeigh_DWPC2X_Crane_Scales.cfm
>>1128942
Put the shit into your truck and drive it down to ye local trucking scale.
>>1128967
Thanks. I did think about a hanging scale, but some stuff I'm weighing might be hard to balance in a basket so I think a platform might be better. I also want to weigh my resin and then read what is left in the barrel after I'm done, that way I can tell how much resin I use. It would be hard to hang one of those drums, but putting one on a platform would be okay.
>>1128970
I'm going to be weighing so much stuff and want the individual weights because I'm going to use them to calculate weight and balance.
I'm in the market for a green laser level. Not red. Green. I have a few red laser levels which are all dewalt. Not a fan boy thing, I've just always trusted dewalt lasers as it was the brand I bought my first from.
I'm wondering if anyone on here uses a green beam laser and if so what brand and type? I'm interested in pic related the DeWalt DCE089D1G but it's £450ish and for about £200 less I could get the DCE088D1G.
Difference is the 89 has 3 axis beams and the 88 has only 2 and the 89 casts a 360 degree beam where as the 88 only casts in the region of 135 degrees.
Some people have complained about the 360 type lasers saying that part of the beam fades out. I'm not sure if this would be as much of an issue as it sounds and from what I've read most manufacturers of 360 beams suggest this should be expected and is within some sort of tolerance.
Does anyone else use green lasers? What would you recommend?
>>1128529
Use a red laser
>>1128529
Bump.
Got lazer guided skill saw.
Why am i always 20 years behind good tech.
Mfw auto darken helmat...
>>1128541
I have three red levels and there's a reason I asked for advice regarding green. Thanks for nothing.
Hello /diy/
I would like to make a necklace where I can hide a Micro SD card on it, and that must be waterproof.
I thought something similar, but I have no really idea to make it waterproof and invisible (a hinge is too much visible).
Do you got some ideas ?
I would recommend something that screws together instead of hinges because it would be smaller and have a better seal.
I think there are coins that you can get that screw apart and can fit micro SD cards. You could get a small clasp that fits around it and put it on a chain
>>1126452
Like these:

https://www.amazon.com/QUARTER-Holder-necklace-pendant-display/dp/B00CU3KYQU
If you don't need to access it often, it would be easiest to seal it with silicone
Hey /diy/, help a /pol/ack out. I have this old ring, the problem is it's made of a very soft and brittle metal. I want to replicate it in some harder metal, but it's filled with details, what do?
>>1124046
>but it's filled with details
Nonsense, a casting could take those details easily.
Lead and tin can be melted in a soup can over a hot stove. If you're willing to build a simple foundry, you can pour hotter metals like aluminum or brass.
>>1124046
use wax to make a mould and recast in some other metal
You don't want to make it in something too hard or it'll either be too brittle or impractical for you to cast it at home.
Knife making thread?
What would be the best way to assemble the handle for this knife with such a short tang.
Never really 'made' a knife before, except for a shitty one I did in school ages ago.
>>1121147
Got it really cheap and cut off the plastic handle.
This is only a test knife to get a little bit of experience before making a knife with more expensive material.
>>1121147
Do a hidden tang with a fairly robust timber
>>1121154
Just to clearify:
Is a hidden tang just drilling a hole into the handle, filling it with epoxy, then hiding the gaps left behind with the knife hilt? Or is a hidden tang splitting the handle and making groves for the tang to fit perfectly (as in your pic)?
Sup anons,
I have a project where I need to read a signal between 0 and 1 volts at more than 100 samples per second.
I decided to get a raspberry pi and attach a gertboard for the ADC.
The equipment giving the signal has an RCA output which ends in two spaded terminals.
What is the best way to attach these tongue terminals?
Pic related, the original cable that came with the equipment.
>>1129781
These are mainly used for screw terminals where you don't want to unscrew the whole screw but just makr it loose and pull it out.
chop off the spades and splice in some female jumper wires. you can pull these female connectors from old computers, etc, (e.g. the audio cables running from the DVD drive to the motherboard)
I'd do what anon suggested
