Hey /diy/, where do you guys buy your solenoids from? I am looking everywhere and all I see are very short small ones. I want to use one to make a door lock.

ebay. Typically between 10 to 20mm stroke.
Can you adjust a solenoid or is it purely an on/off deal?
Basically, can you use it as a light linear actuator...

Lol no
For small service most people use relays or mosfets

K.
There goes my idea then.
Worm screws and mini steppers it is then.....

One for 80s and 90s model car doors is 12v and a long ass screw... google it. Cant fucking remember but my square body chevy has a 2 inch stroke and more than stron enough 4 a door

You can adjust the force by varying the current passing through it, but you can't fundamentally finitely control position. I suppose its possible to add a feedback circuit to turn it into a simple linear servo, but AFAIK there's nothing like that commercially available.
