Hi,

How would I go about to making a smaller pic related? I got my ear clogged and want to try with this instrument since I've already tried with a hair pin, my nails, a fodled clip and other stuff. I thing the pumping motion will help because when I do it with my finger it kind of de-clogs, I just need something with more de clogging power.

idiot go get an ear irrigation kit or try some hydrogen peroxide before you fuck up your ear drum

Have fun with your popped eardrum.

Other anon has it right. Even just some warm peroxide poured down the ear with head held at an angle can be enough, but get one of those turkey baster like things if you can.

Either plaster. Or paint. Between the bricks a grey white color.. A nice wrought iron fireplace fence would be cool too. And maybe some sheveling hung off the brick.

The rest of it is the ugly ass walls, and sad dark room.
>>
>>1139059
add some color imo. the room is all brown and bland. doesn't have to be the fireplace necessarily (not sure what you don't like about the fireplace so idk what to suggest about that) but that room is dark and dreary

Oh Holy /DIY/vers
what are you business plans, current or future?
I thought it might be an idea to post my idea, and hear yours, and to discuss the viabilities and solutions for making our ideas work.

so, I am currently and apprentice upholsterer, with qualifications in yacht fit out. my idea is to start by fitting out a van to function as a mobile upholstery workshop, from which i can provide a mobile re-upholstery service. eventually i want to turn it into an operation for bespoke custom fit out for yachts and van conversions.
what are your thoughts?

I have no idea what the market for upholstery is, but good luck.

I have 2 businesses. One launches RL sales in May (currently online only), the other is reselling CCG and tools (sometimes with restoration).

I will say this - busy work is the killer of most people's attempts at greatness. People, including me, can be subconsciously afraid of failure without even knowing it. That fear will cause us to rationalize wasting time with low-value hard work. Do the high value hard work.

It's very comfortable to be working hard and think "at least I'm not making excuses" but if the work you're doing isn't the most vital thing in making your next dollar - then you ARE making excuses.

This is America. We have professional pet massagers BC people are too lazy to give their dogs a gentle neck rub. We have professional video gamers on Twitch. You can make money doing ANYTHING - but you not only have to work, you have to prioritize.

I am currently in electrician school, and I plan to get my license and finish an engineering associates degree that I left in the dust. With that, I can start an electrical company, although I also like low voltage systems and that could be a success with the dawn of smart homes.

On the more unrealistic side, it'd be cool to design and manufacture electronics devices and control panels. For now, electronics is a hobby.
>>
>>1133695
Along these lines I would like to get together with some friends that are server admins to do independent work on setting up networks and connectivity for companies, that would be cool. I work exclusively with low voltage stuff and it's neat

I use a 1" spade bit to cut a hole through a 4X4 but the hole is JUUUUUST a little too small for the pipe I was gonna shove through it.

How can I make the hole bigger easily without investing in a larger spade bit?

I have a scap section of the steel pipe can I turn that into a cutter somehow?

Rasp, sanding drum, sandpaper on a stick...anything along those lines.

Don't use a larger spade bit. You can't really enlarge anything bigger than a pilot hole with a spade; it just makes a god-awful mess.

teach me how to thread?

You need a set of taps & dies (and drills)

External:
Pretty easy. Run the die down the right size rod that comes in the same sizes as bolt threads.

Internal:
Look up the drill size for the thread. For soft materials, a little smaller bit is OK. For hard materials, cheating the hole slightly larger will make threading easier.

Drill the hole.

Hitting the hole slightly with a countersink or is helpful, both for covering the slight burr from the tap and it makes starting the tap easier. Not necessary though

Use downward pressure as you start the tap. Make sure it's straight with the hole. Go slowly and keep backing up far enough to break the chip. Dont let the tap flutes get filled up with chips, back the tap all the way out to clean if you need to. Oil helps a lot, expecially with harder materials.

Taps are brittle so be careful about the forces you apply, expecially sideways.

Once you get the feel for it, not as much caution is needed, and smaller holes can be tapped with a drill.
>>
>>1138875
>>1138858

For specifically running a tap internally, I always use Tap Magic (smells like cinnamon, red label) and a good rule of thumb is that for every 2 and a half turns, turn it back just over a quarter-turn and you will feel it break the thread, which then runs it into the flutes.
>>
>>1138858
Also at hardware stores they sell quick thread indicators and such on string of sorts for like $10. Worth it if you have no other references, but I bought a poster at Fastenal which gives me a handy breakdown of metric/standard conversions.

Sup /diy/ trying to get into TIG welding but am getting absolutely raped with shielding gas costs.

From what I've read I need 6-7L per minute to shield correctly, the problem is out of these $40/L(60L equivalent) compressed bottles I'm getting barely a minute of use before they're completely empty, my assumption is they're all empty when I buy them because the date of the bottle is around 2014, is this expiry or manufacture date? Because I can't find a single bottle made in the last 2 years.

Yes I have a fixed pressure reg and a flow meter. Yes I've put the entire bottle, reg, flow meter, line and torch under water, no leaks. What am I overlooking here?

When you bought the bottles, did they say that they were full of argon? Because round these parts, the bottle itself and a refill are separate purchases. How much pressure do the bottles have in them, and how does that compare to their pressure at nominal capacity?
>>
Also:
>60L equivalent
That's a tiny bottle. The argon bottles I use at home are 8500 liters capacity
>>
>>1138115

Bottles are good for 5 years past the date, unless they have another marking like a star or something then it;'s good for 10.

hello /diy

I have stripped all the paint of a few walls in my underground workshop (basement)
there are a few small areas that need re pointing with sand and cement.
my question is what can I use to seal the wall once I have finished the cement work.
Every time I come down here the wall has dropped a load of dust all over the desks. I need to coat the wall in something clear and I guess a little water proof as It can get slightly damp down here.

all i can think of is a few coats of watered down PVA glue.
What do you recommend lads?
thanks

Firstly, that ain't a fucking cob wall. Cob is mud, straw, hair and shit. That there is a stone wall.

Now, sealing that cunt:

PVA or silicon waterproofing will do it, but think hard before you do. Walls should breathe and both will, if liberally applied, cause issues later (damp behind for example).

However, if it's just the mortar flaking, then a bit of pva should bind it in - just don't go mad.

The stone doesn't matter - varnish would give it a nice finish, that stuff looks quite hard so shouldn't be causing dust.

As far as re-pointing, make sure it's cement mortar, not lime based. Don't mix the two.
>>
>>1139670
ok thanks. a bunch
we already have a bit of damp that makes the paint flakey and not adhere to the plaster, kind of salty on the other side of this wall, above ground in the kitchen.
the damp patches appear to line up with where the pointing is missing. Its effectively mud in a few places... hopefully a re point will solve this??

in regards to breathing, do you recommend i just PVA the render/pointing? there a 3 more walls just like this that are external walls - would they be able to take up the slack in terms of breathing issues?

thanks for your response mate
>>
>>1139670
sorry me again..

or would chipping out the old flakey render and repointing most of the wall be a better option?

Recently moved into a new room that has no shelves (Spoiler: can't install anything on the walls) so I thought of picking up a few of these 'Gorilla Racks'.

I saw however that they were made of particle board which is horrible if wet.

What's the best way to waterproof them? Also feel free to talk about shelves and storage solutions

make your own from 2x4 and plywood
>>
>>1139605
You could paint them with an exterior grade paint
But first you need to paint them with a wood sealer.
Or you could just cover them with plastic shelf-paper and try not to soak them.
>>
>>1139608
This.

I ripped treated 2x4s to 2x2s or thereabouts and built mine using those with proper cross-bracing of course. Of course the weight on them isn't like engine parts or anything, just terracotta plants with soil. Which is a bit heavy.

i bought for me and my family recently a house, a quite big one but old and mainly wood.
There is 2 apartments on the upper floor (i live in one and one is rented out).
I would like to build a third apartment on the bottom floor, where is now more or less just garage and storage places.

Now the problem is that the house itself is very noisy, i assume that its from the old insulation?
If i walk upstairs or even dare to pull something over the ground, its too loud to live downstairs!
So what do i do?
Rip the ceiling down and replace old isolation against a better one?
Ripping up the floor on the top floor is not an option!

carpets go a long way towards noise prevention.
do you have bare wood floors upstairs?

soundproofing relies on air not being able to move between walls.
this means really packing tight insulation into the walls or ceiling and filling any gaps, i.e. where pipes run between rooms or laying board under floorboards to seal the gaps.

then you have vibrational noise, you can somewhat limit this by limiting the contact area of your boards to joists. you can achieve this using metal runners.

I'm no way an expert but have watched a fair few videos on recording studios.
there are tons of videos on youtube and they all seem to be to do with air flow and vibration.

hopefully another anon can tell you more.
good luck

oh and you can use fire board or even sound board rather than plaster board.
im not sure which has more density out of the fire and the sound but the denser it is the better.
although it will make it harder to fit the boards as they are damn heavy
>>
>>1139544
>Rip the ceiling down and replace old isolation against a better one?
this, use a sound deadening insulation such as quiet batt, or roxul

I take it has an internal battery? Youd have to look for the specs of the shoe, the two important values are input voltage and current. In your case, probably, the striped wire is the positive. Be very careful, as you may cause more damage by wiring it in reverse polarity.
>>
>>1139516
gotcha. I'll see if I can dig up some specs.

Got some reflective tape to add to a bag. Not sure if I really want it to be permanent, so I was just going to attach it with some velcro.

Any other suggestions for increasing visibility and or attaching it?

If you want to put a reflective material on a bag, choose a fabric, not a duct tape.
Pic related.
Also, attach it as a patch, with normal string & needle, not velcro.

>>
>>1139308
How is velcro not permanent (the implication being that the bag side of the velcro has to be permanently attached to it)?
>>
>>1139320
it's not really a tape, per say...like this:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/The-Hillman-Group-1-25-in-x-6-in-Reflective-Safety-Tape-840370/202051763

but that's another idea, not sure if hobby lobby would carry something like that....I believe joann fabrics does carry iron-on type reflective material

>>1139324
I don't really care if the velcro would stay on there, I was more referring to the reflective material

Hey /diy/, I got some solid advice here recently on how to open a lead drum trap.

>I tried torching, causing a massive flame leading me to chicken out
>cut off the sides
>fucked that up causing a leak already
>finally just cut the top off

It's clear now there was a 1" bronze cap threading onto bronze. Maybe by grinding the sides of the remaining part of the cap I could save the threads?

Anyway, I'm mostly back for advice because what I found was not at all what I was expecting. It looks like instead of a drum below, there's just a piece of pipe? My first thought was that the drum had filled up completely with sediment, but after a bit of scraping it does seem to be just pipe there. To one side I can stick a stick a bit deeper but maybe I'm just going further into pipe. To what I think to be the sewer side I can't stick that far, so there's at least a bit of asymmetry.

Any thoughts as to what I'm looking at? I have taken video from the hole, if that would help.

Inside view right after cutting it open. This is not deep at all. From the cut surface it's a little over 2.5". The water level is 7/8".

To clarify, the aim was to fix clogged drains. I suspected the drum trap was the culprit, but... :/

Looks like the perfect size for a plunger. Still you got some major work to do. Why didn't you start with a drain snake?

I avoid cleaning the bathroom at all costs, I usually elect to clean both kitchen and living room as an alternative but it's my turn this time. What's the easiest way to go about it? Can I just cover all tile surface with that cleaning foam and wipe it off expecting the grime to be gone? Or will that require real elbow work? I have a brush and stuff, I just want to avoid touching the gross areas as much as possible
