Alright I've got a project for my engineering class to create a historical object from scratch using your own design. I'm making a guillotine and have so far made a rough prototype(pic related) The way it's designed is that there's a 3/4" steel pipe on each side and a piece of wood holding the blade, which is connected to a couple pieces of PVC pipe that slide up and down the steel pipe. The only problem I'm having so far is that there's a tiny difference in the diameter of the pvc pipe and the steel pipe, so the wood+blade wiggle around going up and down. I tried packing the pvc with tape to fill the gap but even then it was still wiggling around too much. Any more tape and it was too tight. Anyone know how I can get this gap filled without making it too tight?
Here's a closer look at the gap
>>1143637
you want it to be loose, otherwise it will be slow when it chops down, it needs to be fast and does a free fall
but why are you not using your own design?
that is so badly made
Im totally new, how can I get into this ? I want to build an airplane like pic related with my dad, we know basic or medium mechanics about cars; sources for prototypes or instructions ? I always liked WWI airplanes specially those with many wings, if anyone has something to give I would be very grateful, gonna be posting whatever comes from this from time to time
>>1143505
you want to build a real airplane or a model?
>>1143505
If you're in the USA, check out the Experimental Aircraft Association, EAA.
>>1143505
Be advised, depending where you live it may be impossiable to get the plane inspected and registered if you dont have a aircraft mechanic certificate from your governments avation administration if it is home built.
I grew this.

Why?
Post pics of the plant and provide details you jackass

Hello me and my lady purchased this house its about 100 years old.the whole place needs work but the most stressful problem is the front room. It has a significant slope
I just want this room to be supported and level so we can lay laminate and get on with the rest of the work
Down in the basement the supports are pretty rigged, and some of the joists are cracked, my thought processes is that i am gonna need to rip out the old subfloors and jack and sister the joists so that the new ones are level and i just wanted some opinions on this
i want to start making my own keyboard piano or synths.
How do i harden cardboard to work with since i dont own or have accesses to a wood machine. id l;ike the board to withstand water
my case or housing would be made out of cardboard for prototype purposes and maybe for selling too. i figured each prototype i make will be different from the others. i may want to sell them later as i get better at it.
You could probably impregnate the cardboard with epoxy, idk how you would go about it though.
>>1143387
ill look into that i guess.
cardboard seems abundant and i can work wiht it if i make mistakes. i plan on it housing a speaker, solar panel, smartphone and usb connections. i may aswell gut a midi keyboard and have it in one piece.
i plan to sell these non commercially after i make three for myself.
You can harden paper and thin cardboard by satuating it with white wood glue (waterproof also works) and glueing a few layers on top of each other. The result is similiar to fiber reinforced plastic and strong enough for some people to make gun barrels in this manner.
It's pretty hard to work with though, as it needs to be pressed into the desired shape for three days (for a normal plate of 1-3mm thickness) and is almost impossible to work with once hardened (saws won't cut properly, knifes only scratch like they would on wood, files rip it apart instead of cutting). Also, outting the different layers on top of each other without creating bubbles or having them shift is pretty hard at first.
Hey /diy/,
was given a set of Apple earpods with a lightning connection, but don't have an iPhone. Is it a straight analogue connection through to the speakers, or is there a digital conversion.
And does anyone have a wiring diagram, I could still give them away if I haven't cut into them to look around.
>>1143306
Now this is an interesting problem. The 3.5mm>lightning adapter (opposite of the one you want) has a DAC in it, so I suspect those things take digital and have their own DAC. Someone's sure to start manufacturing a lighting>3.5mm adapter (the one you want) sometime, but I suspect not yet. The ADC of the earbuds is contained within the lightning jack housing, so you could chop the whole thing off, use an oscilloscope to figure out which lead is which, but soldering onto those tiny leads with nylon in them is a pain in the arse and I wouldn't recommend it at all. Coming from a guy who tried and failed to fix his headset. They're easily valuable enough to sell and buy a pair of equivalent earphones (just don't get the knock-off coloured Apple EarPods, they're garbage). Look around on /g/ or wherever for a recommended pair of earbuds or whatever.
>>1143318
Yeah exchanging them is probs the best option. Ah well, maybe one day tearing apart apple crap will be practical. Cheers for the tips.
>>1143321
It's practical to tear apart old Apple computers, people turn them into fishtanks and the previous generation Apple Pro shit makes a pretty nice computer case with some modifications. It's just when you get to such tiny stuff everything has to be potted/sealed in silicone because there isn't enough room for a rigid enough container without it. All 3.5mm stuff is the same, I'd full-on convert to 6.3mm if my laptop and phone and everything else didn't use 3.5mm. I need to go vintage, but finding a smartphone old enough to have a 6.3mm jack might pose a problem.
How do I gold plate aluminum or steel, whichever is cheaper to do?
I'm doing an art project where one side needs to be gold plated and the other silver plated.
I've been looking online but I'm not really seeing good guides on how to plate steel or aluminum.
From what I've read I need to plate the steel in nickel->copper->gold/silver. Is there a way to do less steps? I'd also prefer to work with aluminum.
>art
just paint it
>>1143192
They have those two part paints, black first then chrome or gold and it looks real.
>>1143192
>one side needs to be gold plated and the other silver plated
>needs
Why does it NEED to be plated? If there's some chemical or electrical need for it, sure, but if it just needs to look gold/silver, there are easier ways. Like anodizing aluminum to gold, then cleaning one side back to silver.
Ok /diy/. I've gone and melted close to 400 pounds of aluminum into muffin shaped ingots, and now I want to do something. Namely, ant mound castings.
Problem is, I'm in an area where ants are virtually non-existent. Mounds like you see in the deep south? No way in hell.
That said, would it be feasible to grow an ant colony (like you would an ant farm) in a bucket and just cast that? Any idea on if this is feasible?
Would you ever have a reason to travel south? It would make a neat souvenir. It would be really interesting to raise the ant colony in a form to achieve a colony roughly the shape of the form. Also I believe they only cast abandoned colonies to avoid dead ants stuck to the thing everwhere
>>1143177
They'll use the wall of the bucket as part of their corridors, so you'd have to have some layer lining the buckets the ants couldn't penetrate but which you could knock off later. Plaster of Paris?
If it leaks you don't really want it to just go through the plastic either. So maybe a galvanized steel tub, plaster of paris on the walls?
>>1143177
As someone doing the same exact thing, where did you get all of your aluminum? I'm having trouble finding scrap to melt and would appreciate any tips.
How do I force my aircon to use the compressor?
It won't activate below 18C
>>1143175
Find the sensor and wrap it in something warm. That ought to trick the little fucker
>>1143175
at that temp you will freeze the coil.
>>1143175
Are you an eskimo?
Just picked up this bad boy today: https://www.boschtools.com/us/en/boschtools-ocs/combo-pack-routers-1617evspk-27718-p/
I need to get some bits but I can't decide. There are a lot of bit "kits" which come with a bunch of bits cheaply (like 2-4 dollars per bit) but individual bits are like $20-$30.
Are the bits that come in kits total shit, or are the individually-sold ones just a ripoff? How should I go about buying my bits?
You spent $200 on a tool you don't know anything about?
>>1143150
High count bit kits, especially if they are of Chinese origin, tend to be shit. If it's a little bit kit, like 5 or so, they can sometimes be better. Avoid anything from China unless you only plan to use it a few times. I have never found a Chinesium bit that didn't lose it's edge and need constant resharpening. I bought some Freud bits awhile back and I was very happy with them. I got them on sale, though. I think I paid about $7 a bit, which is low for standard bits from them. If you are looking for some fancy-ass bits you can expect to pay $40 or more just for one.
Buy what you need and only when you need it if cost is a problem.
>>1143159
I've used a router plenty of times, but it was my dads router and he had tons of bits (he's a contractor). I have some upcoming projects for my house, like custom trim and baseboard for which I need a router. Also, I'm not poor so $200 isn't shit.
>>1143161
I think buying the individual ones, as I need them is the way to go after all. That way I can have only quality bits. I'm just eager to play with it so I feel stupid not at least picking up one flute bit.
is it fixable or at least ... improvable?
also why is god so fucking cruel :(
>>1143109
Whut, I say, whut in tarnation did yah do there boy?
>>1143109
have you tried turning it off and on again?
>>1143109
See how it sound now. I may have made it sound better than new.
From now to september we have a detour through our street, it's loud as fuck, trucks, bikes, everything.
I want to seal the windows some more so the sound is more acceptable.
Is there a cheap way to make them soundproof? I thought of building a frame with insulation and putting it into in front of the window.
It sucks because no more light, so is there any other way? maybe sealing off any air that comes through from the sides with some foam or something?
>>1143100
Get a quote on some acoustic glass. It's double glass, but one of the panes is actually two laminated together with a clear rubber in between.
If it's too fucking expensive (probably) you could try laminating two pieces of glass together with a layer of clear rubber in between, then put that behind your old window. It's the DIY spirit. If you do that, do throw some gel packets in between the old window and your new one for condensation.
Glass is pretty cheap and clear rubber resin doesn't seem all that expensive :

>>1143113
Solid advise here. Hobby lobby sells clear vinyl. Coukd try staoling like 5 layers of that shit up. It woukd be pretty thick then. After a few years it will turn yellow and look like shit. But if it works its cheao enough i'd just make it an every 3 year project or something.
>>1143100
have you considered vacuum ? it is very sound proof
I want to build a string light setup for a restaurant patio. How do I go about building the posts?
>>1142989
Get a tree and whittle.
>>1142990
I thought about a tree but I'd be paranoid of it rotting or some asshole cutting it down, so I was thinking steel pipe.
My biggest question is how to plant the posts. Along the outer perimeter of the patio is a bunch of mulch and shrubbery. Would you get a plastic bucket and fill it with concrete?
>>1143018
You don't even need the plastic bucket. You could just dig a hole, fill it with concrete, put post in and let it cure. Metal post would probably look trashy/hokey versus a treated wood post, but it's really all about what type of look you're going for.
Hey /diy/ i was wondering if any of you could recommend a good material to make reusable stencils.
Pic related.

10kg aluminum bricks for maximum durability
actually, go with 316 stainless steel 20kg bricks
TL:DR the question: Can I span about 10.6 feet half lapped on top of 4x4" with 2x8" ?? and support the roof of a shed?
so I live with my parents, I'm in the process of getting my CDL and I wanna long haul, they are fine with me living with them because I wont be around and they know I'll be making money, saving up for my own place, instead of wasting money on renting some place that I wont even be there for 1/3rd the time I'm renting it for.
anyway I need a place to move my tools and motorcycle into. so I'm in the process of building a shed, but because of local rules and code, anything besides a tent needs to be fucking permitted and built like a fuckin house practically. but its cause "Florida" and hurricanes and shit, they don't want your cuck shed flying into someone else house.
so can I span this distance?
probably
>>1142830
Like you said. It depends on your city and zoning inspector and whether or not they will allow it. As a framer I would see no problem with this. You would want 2x10 if it were any longer, or in an area that gets snow.
>>1142965
Yeah I looked in the library for some sort of code book even an old one.. And couldn't find any. My only other issue is whether or not the 4x4 can be used. Or a 6x6 needs to be used. And I kinda need to know. Because when I pour the concrete slab I need to place a threaded rod with a nut and washer into the correct place. (like I said.. Hurricane proofing the thing e everything needs to be bomb proof.)
