I'm looking to make some basic, sturdy furniture to fit out my new house. Stuff like:
>a workbench
>bedside table
>tool shelves
>a backyard bar
What are some good resources to learn with?
is that pocket screwed together?
>>1130871
Yeah
What sort of joinery would you use for a quick 2x4 table?
>>1130872
Not fucking pocket screws. Pic is a work bench made to roll around at work. It's so far lasted 3 years of daily abuse and there's not a single pocket screw on it.
Hey /diy/ are there any other interesting people on youtube who build shit like michaelcthulhu? ive found a couple of channels before but it was mostly people with bland as fuck personalities with shit video quality. Not really looking for like, how to channels. Just people hanging out in their garage making cool shit that they like.
I like watching this dude, he inspires me a lot to get out and make or do something. The bitch is he can really upload videos once a month or longer.

How do i unlock a phone?
>>1136881
10lb sledgehammer ought to do it
Put the code in, or the swype pattern.
Unlock as in passcode or carrier lock?
what would you guys like to see come about in the tool market? concepts, designs, etc. what designs or ideas for tools do you have of your own? have you made any? did they work?
I've been trying to figure out a way to make a hammer handle which can swap out heads, so claw hammer, ball peen, blacksmith hammer, crowbar head, etc.
I was considering a system where there's a full tang going through the handle of the hammer with a pommel at the bottom and some way to adapt air hose quick connect to hammer heads/other tool heads.

i have a project due tomorrow where i have to demonstrate how to solder to a bunch of normies. any ideas on what i should do for the demonstration???
steam gift card to best idea
>>1136742
You should pretend you can solder, just poke the iron into some circuit board and light a cigarette under it to make some smoke.
>>1136745
thats actually not a bad idea. id ont smoke cigs though. should i use marijuana instead?
>>1136747
Yeah, or even a candle, or a match, or something that makes smoke.
Looking to build a bar-top arcade machine, I can't find any good templates though. Would anyone here have any good templates?
>>1136736
Well then what the fuck is that picture you just posted?
>>1136736
I'm about to start one also. Got the tools and MDF, just not settled on the design yet.
May just draw it onto the sheets and cut the sides, then improvise from there, can't be too hard.
I did see some plans online though, have a Google, they're out there, and free.

Hi /diy/
I recovered a 23" 1680×1050 LCD panel from an old laptop and I want to use it as a screen.
I searched online and everyone use smaller laptop screen to do so
Now since my panel seems to have more than one socket I was wondering if anyone here knew what to use on it
Pic related are what I'm talking about

There's an eBay seller based in China that lives off people sending them specs and they send back the needed chips to run the display. Ordered from them before, like 30 bucks for an inverter(whatever the fuck that does) and control circuit. Works like a charm, turned old laptop display and raspberry pi into a weather station with it.
No fukken clue what they were named though. I'll try to find the old emails
So I'm refinishing this old wood Japanese racing wheel and I need your help, craftsman bros.
I've already stained it and I am waiting for it to cure. I have purchased oil-based urethane in a tin and I could use some tips on how to make the final coat look like a mirror finish. I purchased a fine-bristle brush and I was hoping I could just glob on the clear layer by layer and sand with 220 grit in between? Three layers fine?
>>1136450
Five minimum since your hands will constantly be rubbing down the clear. The more the better, personally I'd do at least seven.

Hope you have a completely dust free environment, it takes ages to dry so the chance of dust pick up is huge.
If you use a spray can of an acrylic paint like Rust-Oleum crystal clear enamel you can do coats 2 minutes apart, instead of 2 days apart.

220 grit is gonna fuck your paintjob up.

Hey /diy/,
I know you hate these kind of threads but I'm starting to get desperate. I need an engineering/metalworking project to do to keep myself busy while I have the tools availible before I move across the country to move in with my gf. I have access to a lathe, welder, milling machine and all the usual stuff courtesy of my fathers workshop. I have about 5 months before I leave and I've put aside about $300 for any material costs. Surely you guys could help a guy out? Any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated

>>1136429
That just ain't me man. Besides, there's laws against that
Make yourself a couple of fully functional storage units with hinges and LEDs on the inside and everything you could possible need.
Would serve you well in the long run, definitely.
Any one have some tips on building a spit for a pig roast
>>1136399
This is literally a cooking method developed by cavemen. All you need to do is create fire and understand how the wheel works. Hit+spin=survival
>>1136400
so is making a fire but you can't do it right until you're taught by someone who's done it before, cunt
>>1136431
>you can't do it right
Yes, and reminder that the prohibitions against chewing on pig by the various sand pirate religions is based in the horrific pan zoological parasites and pathogens you WILL get if you improperly cook the pig.
WILL.
You need to cook the ever living FUCK out of pig to remove the risk. That's something that is rather difficult to ensure with a pit fire. There are solutions, research and into them.
And as per all mammals, improper slaughter and you'll be fucked no matter what you do. And whatever you do, stay away from eating the brain. Prions.
Enjoy your trichinosis, OP.
got a beutiful oak bed for free. It was used by overweight people before so it's all creaky now. Makes horrible noises even from tiniest movements. Seems the previous owners tried to fix this by adding extra screws. Doesn't seem it worked as it's in my hands now. Any ideas how to silence it?
Pic semi related, very similar looking except the head piece
Nothing. Screws aren't proper joinery and the fatsos reamed out the threads most likely. Rebuild it with proper wood joinery and it'll support you and fat albert.

I'm going to assume the mattress is suspended on slats.
what I would try :
- replace the 3 beams holding up the slats with something wider (screw and glue). If not possible strengthen them.
- replace the slats.
- If they aren't already, glue all connections between boards on the head/back end.
- I assume the head/back are connected to the sides and centre beam with brackets, they might allow some movement. Try replacing them.
If all else fails, something like this can take a lot of weight off the wooden frame :
https://www.thesleepshop.com/store/pc/Lazarbeam-Bed-Support-King-Size-6p1070.htm
Oil the joints. No friction, no creaking.
What do you use to store and hold your tools?
I'm having a bit of a crisis here. I don't seem to know what I want.
>>1136226
Try to see what other guys use who are doing similar things to what you do. Usually they have done it all the wrong ways, but not always, so feel free to incrementally improve on what they do.
The key, of course, is to have what you need frequently close at hand. Something you use once a week can stay in the truck. Something you use every few minutes should be in a pocket, pouch, or tool belt.
Just try to avoid lugging 50 lbs of tools to the work site when you only use 10 lbs every day. Those tote bins are great for carrying lots of extraneous equipment quickly, but don't overdo it and ruin your back.
Most experienced people do three or four main tool boxes and they keep a smaller box or pouch that carries their main tools.
You have a core set of tools that you use constantly and the rest are carried as needed.
You can always spot the apprentice plumbers as they carry their big ass box full of pipe wrenches around for everything.
I wish I had a cool job like rigging or factory maintenance where I could justify those cool ass backpacks. Walking around someone's house with a backpack is just fucking gay.
Greetings DIY masters
So I find and junk a lot of stuff, and I do enjoy reusing a lot of the parts off circuit boards, but lately I was hoping to increase my efficiency by using even smaller components
However, a lot of the parts look similar despite being very small. Is there any website, program or something I can do to identify these parts off a circuit board? To find out what they do?
I tried googling the part numbers but not much seems to come up
>>1136131
thats a pretty old board
the only parts you may have trouble identifying are the silver cans (probably transistors or opamps), the black resistor looking things (ferrite beads), and the little three pin surface mount devices (usually transistors or diodes).
the silkscreen is a good guide
Q?? = transistors
D?? = diodes
R?? = resistor
L?? = inductor
C?? = capacitor
TP?? = test point
>>1136134
>the only parts you may have trouble identifying are the silver cans
Huh? Canned parts are generally big enough to have unambiguous markings. Many, if not all of them, in that pic seem to be BC107s. The cylindrical ones are tantalum capacitors with voltage/capacitance value on them.
Actually, the picture I used in my first post is just a random picture I got off the internet, but the bases is just the same
This picture is the latest

Fuck off.
>>1135140
ignore that hater, this is a good diy project that will result in a long-term thread.
we need more details, like what sort of furniture appeals to you. show pics of your living room and dining room, for example so we can help spec out the boat.
Is the layout already set? For what kind of sailing will it be for? Just leisure at the cost of efficiency or something more practical?
