Just rented a cabin off the Oregon coast. The owner is interested in selling it to me, but he wants to see if I'll keep it clean and provide the upkeep needed to the property.

That being said, I need help on maintaining a certain standard of living for myself, my wife, and my kids. The cabin comes with a couple of generators, and a water heater that runs on propane. Our water is a gravity system that come from a nearby creak. Is there another option besides generator to at least keep the fridge running and lights on? I really don't want to pay out the ass in gasoline for the generator, and that shit gets loud. Any machinery I need to invest in?

Of course tv and game system is a wanted luxury, but it's not necessary. money isn't a problem. But I prefer to keep it as cheap as possible.

Solar panels and battery.
>>
>>1139072
On that note, there is a basic solar panel setup there, but it's not fixed yet. I think they got used power cells and built a makeshift one.

Now, what id like to do is get a power pack inverter to use. Maybe use it for the fridge and lights, and keep it charged using the generator. would there be an issue keeping the power pack running constantly, and charging it as needed with a generator?
>>
>>1139072
yep

not necessarily cheap, but better than using gas

depending the are some small wind turbines might be useful

Hey guise so I stupidly try to lube up my locks with 3in1 oil and guess what. It's a mess. Every time I put my key in all this grease comes out and it dirties up my hands and clothes. Any way to dry this up for good? I have been using toothpicks, qtips and by putting the key in and out and wiping it with a towel to no avail. I'm thinking about putting some graphite powder in there to "dry it up". would that be a good idea?

take it apart, clean with solvent. then use graphite powder to lube, you stupid hippy.
>>
no the graphite powder will clog like fuck and mess up the inner workings of the lock.

Xmas eve 1996 the door locks on my taxi were frozen, eventually i got them thawed enough to open the drivers door. had some 3 in 1, thought " oh this'll help displace any moisture" and squirted some in the lock. sure as fuck the oil just sat there and oozed onto the key each time i put it in.
another thought occurred "if i leave it like this it's going to get messy, i know i'll soak it up with the graphite powder i bought to lube that big ass padlock i have"
puffed the powder into the lock, lock got jammed up like fuck, but only AFTER i'd managed to lock the taxi door again.

tl:dr NOPE

i can't take it apart. it's a master lock for my store.

What finish do I use on wooden clamps and cauls so that they don't get glued to the wood being clamped but also don't mess with the grip on the surfaces?

Hi mates, do you have any idea what this type of rubberized paint/coating?? it's called?

its technically called Body Schutz when used in that application, but bed liner (brand name rhino liner) is usually what people call it. 3M packages it under the Mar-Hyde brand. always use 3M.

Hello,

I don't come to this board often, but I hear some of you have a nice expertise, so thank you in advance if you can point me to the good direction about my project:

I want to create a program that I would run on a computer full of videos and that could feed one or multiple channels to a screen primarly but also to a network.

It would be like a private TV channel for my home.

I have notions in python but I would like to have some input on how to go by this in general (plugins, libraries, stuff I didnt think of)

Thank you again for your help

I have connected 5v dc and shorted GND with contrast line - this is a result i got, half of it doesn't lit and I am wondering if I should proceed with DB25 connection... Anyone got a clue what's might be the problem? I wonder if there's something broken inside or is it normal behaviour? Backlight (pins 15/16) doesn't work at all, it just gets the controller really hot.

Cheers

You need to initialize it.
>>
>>1137741

You mean without initialization it's normal that it displays only half of the line...? I found a post here:

http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=111894.0

...where a guy says: "Next you should connect the power and contrast connections (pins 1, 2, and 3). You should be able to get a display consisting of one line of 'blocks'." In my case, I got only half of block lit... And wonder if there's some kind of hardware problem with the paths on PCB.

I am moving into a home with no appliances provided (Land Contract), and I have noticed that Habitat for Humanity has a thrift store near me selling appliances....does anyone know if HfH tests the appliances donated to them, or do they sell them as is?

I figured it may be a better idea to support a charity that helps people than buying from joe schmo from facebook who maybe lying about the condition of the washer he is selling.

no idea, ask them ;) probably minimum fcntion check..
..but Protip, dont buy fridges second-hand - people dont usually change them for no reason and even if they tested 'working' high probability of being bust, thermostat broke so runs constantly (costalots), freezer dont work properly, etc.

They are also cheap (enough) new with guarantee etc. that second hand, dont make sense, all IMO.
>>
Did some volunteer work for them a while back. They check every single appliance to make sure it's working before selling. Went there the other day to get a microwave to make a foundry out of.

Hey /diy/
Is anyone here savvy with audio preamps?
I've got an A.R.T. tube preamp/compressor that just cut out on me the other day.
>be recording guitar through preamp into usb interface
>everything working fine, sounding good
>turn preamp off to grab a coffee
>come back, turn preamp on
>NO FUCKING SOUND.

I'm propa gutted-like. This thing has been my go-to for years. Always done well for me. It still powers on, so I doubt it's a fuse issue. I pulled the PCB out of the chassis and checked the input and output connections. Seemed alright by my eyes. But I'm no expert, not by a longshot.

I've tried the usual "try every fucking guitar cable in the house" and whatnot. Changed out the tubes with some brand new ones. No results.

Still waiting on one myself. ART doesn't have the schematic on their website, I shot them an email but haven't heard back.

Google wasn't too helpful. This cropped up under a forum, but idk how helpful it'll be

any plumbers on /diy/?

my toilet pipes are clogged and i have no idea how to unclog them, i've already put a whole methlab of chemicals trough it and it won't budge, does anyone got any tips?

The only thing you should use is dish or laundry detergent... Other wise you risk damage to the seals and also possible chemical burns from contact. Be sure to tell the plumber what hazards await him.

If it's slowly going down, a bucket of water pored into the drain from up high can give enough force over time as the paper dissolves in to the water. (Dish and laundry detergent help break down the fibers and act as a glue to glue the water together pulling it down the drain).
>>
>>1137189
we've done the detergent thing like an hour ago and its still not going down, should i pour some in and leave it overnight?
>>
>>1137195
Keep checking the water level. If you see it's slowly going down then yes, por water from about 3 feet above into the bowl's drain, the force will help break it up. It may have to sit for a while but it can clear it self this way.

My pilot light went out this morning.

I tried to re-light it (it's gone out a couple times over the last year) and it wouldn't light. I didn't smell any gas either (I normally do).

After trying to light it over and over I finally smelled gas, but I don't think it was coming from the pilot. I looked around and noticed moisture next to the gas line connection to the water heater. I can still faintly smell gas but I tried lighting the air on fire so clearly it's not too bad of a leak.

Outside my house my gas line is very rusty and if I hold my nose over it for a few minutes I can usually get a faint gas smell, but it's been like this for a while.

Any ideas?

>Outside my house my gas line is very rusty

Time to redo the whole thing, don't nigger this, call the gas company and let them fix it
>>
>>1137108
Tried this, no bubbles at the connection. I suspect the small leak may be inside the housing of the control box thing.

>>1137109

I used to be an alcoholic and have like 20 empty Jameson bottles. I didn't want to throw them away because I don't want to forget about what I went through during that time. I wanted to make some sort of furniture out of them like a shelf or something. Just wondering if you guys had any other ideas.

Yes sir
>>
>>1137087
You and I must have a different definition of shelf.

Not quite sure how you would turn glass in bottle format into a thin tough material suitable for mounting hardware to.

I can't think of any kind of furniture that's made out of glass, which seems to be what you're looking for?

If I've got the wrong end of the stick do let me know.

/fit/ here again.

I'm a thirld wolder so I want to make concrete weights because I'm from a poor shithole.

Can you guys give me the recomendations in terms of volume I need to make weight plates of 2kg, 5kg, 10kg and 20kg?

what would be the volume in cm3 of said weights assuming average mix of concrete and grava (sand).

also, what would be said volume in relation to cans, like how much big in liquid terms (gallons or liters) do the cans/bottles need to be.

Too retarded to do the conversion.

Many thanks for your help.

Why dont you try working out your brain instead of your arms. I think it needs it more if you can't manage these simple calculations.

ill give you a hint. 4160ml is ~10kg concrete
