I want to make a shield for a LARP event because I'm not feeling like throwing 150 bucks for a piece of foam.
I had the idea to make a shield similar to pic related (Halo's Hunter shield), covering the arm and the forearm. The thing is, I need to shape it in order to make it look acceptable.

So here's my problem: I need to use some kind of material that can be easily cut and bent (And possibly curved) to make the support of the shield.
It must be resistant enough to be able to take light hits without breaking or deforming, and be rigid enough to not bend under its own weight.
Weight isn't really a factor, but since it's for a LARP, it will probably be used to hit people, so something really heavy would make it difficult for me to not actually hurt the target.

I have a bunch of "regular" tools, the ones you find about everywhere, but I sadly don't have access to complex and/or expensive machinery. I can however, get a bunch of tools I don't have, if needed.

So according to you, which material should I use?

Make one out of card board or corrugated plastic. cover it with spray foam then
spray paint or airbrush the details?
Guessing paint could be the most expensive part.
>>
>>1140113
Use 1x4 and some light ply board to build the shape then cover in spray foam and shave off excess.
Now I want to build one.
>>
>>1140115
The problem I have is that I need to shape the plastic. Cardboard would probably be too fragile to use as a support, but I will consider it. Maybe reinforce it with whatever I find.

Been trying to fix this tv for a while but I only just started going at it seriously.

I've only found 2 faults so far, this bulge on what I'm assuming to be a resistor, and 2 ram looking ICs that look burnt.

The issue is the tv has lines going across it when it's on.

Now before I spend $60 replacing the board with the burnt looking ram chips, is there any chance the problem might be pic related?

So here's the deal, COA doesn't allow alterations to existing structure. I have a patio outside my condo I wish to make more private with a wood fence...I need to erect the posts with out drilling into existing concrete...my plan was using 5gal buckets filled with and post plummed in the middle of it. From there I'd place them in planters and cover with potting soil and plant flowers, herbs or whatever. My worries are that it wouldn't be stable enough to support a fence during winds or storms (live in north Florida). Any input or suggestions appreciated.

Also picture with idea of single wall fence
>>
>>1139373
you might want to think of buiding an A frame on both ends of the fence and possibly every x amount of feet off center.
>>
>>1139373
a patio is generally not a structure. Check your laws for what defines a structure, usually it is something with greater than 100 sq ft and has a roof.

I would just sink some anchors into the patio and go to town. if they don't like it, you can always cut them off flush with the surface.

Trading companies have already done what you want to do for a long time, with literally more money than you will ever see in your lifetime as its funding. If you want to do it as a hobbie, fine, but dont bet any money or at best you will have wasted a lot of time, or a lot of money at worst.

How did you acquire your tools and how long did it take to accumulate them? I inherited many of mine from my father and grandfather, and now I just go to the hardware store a couple of times a month to pick up shit I need.

I started by buying hand tools and sockets at harbor freight , lets face it hand tools are a piece of metal and the brands dont matter. I picked up a 20 volt porter cable drill impact combo and that thing has been great , i added a jig and circular saw to that combo when they were on sale for $49 doll hairs. I also got a nice security bit and bit driver set from amazon for electronics, my soldering iron is a 2 dollar one from harbor freight, im shopping for an upgrade but it does the job. On my car i have a nice kobalt socket and wrench set i got during black friday for 40 bucks. Im not really cheap i just like good deals.

>I just go to the hardware store a couple of times a month to pick up shit I need.

Just this mostly. Start project, run in to something i really need a particular tool for, buy. I've inherited some small stuff but mostly just purchased over the years. Several years.

If i don't need a thing right away i add it to a list and wait for sales. Canadian Tire aka Cambodian Tyre is usually a ripoff at full price however they do deep cut 50%-75% sales on a regular basis. I wait for those if possible. Also black friday and boxing day there are always good sales on power tools on amazon.

when i go to the city centrum - browsing hardware stores - there is like 20+ of them where all the stores are i allways buy somthink even if its small like centerpunch, or a small tool/parts box - the workshop was a mess years back there is ton of work to do like sorting small stuff, geting shit in proper standard boxes etc.(pic releted just finished asemblyng box of stamples and nails for stample gun only missing cable stamps)

5-10 years ago I'd go through alleyways and could find at least a radio or tv once a month to pull parts from. I got really lucky a couple times and found power supplies and other neat shit.

Today, it's rare. Especially CRT stuff, which were nice for the transformers and HV capacitors.

Where do you guys go to get things to harvest parts from? Free or really cheap. I know you can just go to ebay and buy component assortments, but shit like pots, transformers and power transistors cost a decent amount of money.

US? Then no idea. Here in the EU all vendors of electronics must accept broken goods for recycling, and because they have to pay for pick up you can usually rummage through, no problem. Gotten a lot of chargers and computer parts that way, also some kewlt looking scrap metal for pet projects.
>>
>>1140086
Come to think of it, in the early days of this shit, a local shop went bankrupt failing to handle pickups. Owner was a blonde airhead, and the shop had no storage. She thought anyone not accepting the trash would be arrested or something so she paid for daily pickups from a specialist service. Another company got wind of this and dumped a fuckton of old servers and crt-s on her.

/diy/ I'm trying to isolate a water leak on my property by shutting off just the house water like I have done with the irrigation system. I dug off the shut off valve near the slab, no crawl space no basement just a slab in North Texas. I see that the supply line is PE or PEX or something other than metal and it's grey. Looks to have a crimp fitting of some sort. The pipe is metal, not sure if cast iron or copper under the slab. The valve looks to be threaded on both ends. I need to go to the store to get a replacement but I don't know if there is something special on the PEX side of the valve? It looks crimped. Pic related.

I'd love to have a turn key valve like at the main shut off. Both my backflow preventer and this shut off have corroded badly yet the turn key works fine so I want a turn key god damnit.

Need a better pic. Doesn't look PEX. Maybe polyethylene. You're going to have to dig it out better to replace it, do it now and take some better pics.

Tomorrow morning I will dig and get a better picture. Tonight I look to see if the city is being a dick by not giving me water usage history for the property. Just bought this home in December and I want to see if there was a leak before I bought it. I called the city to ask and they said privacy laws protect usage but everyone I speak to say that's bullshit.

Does anyone know of a good comprehensive resource on how to install recessed lighting?

I want to put it in my basement.

it takes a wooden or plasterboard ceiling. if you don't have that, if it's solid, you'll need to lower it and put in a wooden or plasterboard ceiling.
>>
>>1140730

What do you mean b plasterboard? My ceiling is drywall and the joists are 2x10s, so I assume there's plenty of height.

I already have wiring in the ceiling from the existing lights (4 ft florescent), so I can use that.

I know I want to go with LEDs but I don't know if I want the integrated LEDs or just LED bulbs. It's 3 rooms and I'm going to do a total of 16 fixtures.

What makes that material so rare?
And what kind of hat are you thinking?

Shit looks synthetic and thin. Best bet would be to carefully separate the pieces of a trucker cap and copy the pattern and sew bits of that onto the front and bill. You're not likely going to male anything too cool out of that stuff.

But then again, I specialize in pirate hats made of heavy felt.

thanks for the advice your hats look awesome. Yes the material is super thin and probably will go with what your saying.
Its not the material but the pattern itself. Predator camo is one of if not the most effective open breakup camo patterns on the market. They at some point offered a blaze orange but it is nonexistent now and can't be found anywhere. I magically got my hands on these scraps and have been offered 200$ for them, more if I can make something out of them.

Hallo fellas, tiny question aimed at IT pros. I have an old laptop with IDE port but I only have SATA HDDs, I know there are adaptors being sold on ebay but I wold like to do it by myself, anyone ever done this? I know it's not possible to connect directly, problem is that I can't find any datasheet on Google.

You aren't going to beat eBay's Chinamen in price and if you want to do this as a personal challenge or something, challenge yourself with Google and social engineering first, as the bridge IC datasheets are usually behind NDAs.

Cleaning up a twice-Craigslisted Harbor Freight 7x10 metal lathe, this stuff works pretty well. Spray, soak for 5-10s, takes almost everything off, anything it misses you can get with a second round. Couple really nasty spots took a couple seconds with a brush. Doesn't evaporate off like some cleaners though, so for situations like this I worry it'll break down the oil over time. Good enough I'd buy another if I needed it now, not so good that I wouldn't research online if I had time.
