Social media has very little to do with being social. In its essence, social media is what most people use to stay in contact with people they already know/knew, not so much for making new connections.

I use social media to organize events with my friends but comparatively, the same could be done with a text or a phone call, social media just makes it easier. Its also really handy for finding out about concerts/events around town and for messaging people who don't aren't consistent with returning calls or answering e-mails. My job even has a private Facebook page for communicating about things outside of work.

Drop this attitude that anything that is popular is normie garbage. You can be a genuine person and also enjoy popular things. It doesn't have to be one or the other. People will pick up on being condescended to and no amount of arbitrary social media presence will cover that up. Facebook is useful. Drake is catchy. Starbucks tastes good. Ok? Its ok to like popular things and fighting against them just to be contrarian won't make you a more genuine or interesting person.

Join up, talk to people. I dunno, get a snapchat or an instagram and follow your favorite musicians or something. You don't have to live your life with your face in a screen or even post all the time and be super active, just make some kind of attempt to appear accessible to other people.
