Adopt a few new hobbies to keep you busy during the time that you would normally be drinking.
Boredom will only make you want to get drunk.

theres only a few things that cutting cold turkey helps, like drinking sodas to stop being fat.

just try to limit yourself. give yourself a night once a week to get plastered, a goal, a treat to work yourself towards. I usually give myself friday or saturday. Get together with some friends and just watch a horrible movie and get as drunk as i can before passing out.
>>
>>18314861
Not something I've ever had a problem with but probably the same way I quit smoking. Keep trying to quit even if you relapse once or a dozen times.

Alcoholics Anonymous actually works.
For your average alcoholic it's nearly impossible to stop drinking without some type of outside help. That help normally has to take the form of some kind of religion, or organization. You need to give an alcoholic a reason not to drink. Finding God is a tried, and true method.
>>
>>18314861
You have to want to, that's the first requirement. After that part, it get's a lot easier. You may also have to stop spending time with the same people you go to the pub with, for a time at least. That depends on your level of self control. You need to be able to build up your self control again, the actual addiction to alcohol may or may not be that strong but the habit will want to continue for a long time. That's about it man.

Last year I stopped drinking for like 8 months because I was heavily focused on fitness, getting a new job and several other things. I slowly started again, however and now I'm having a bit of difficulty kicking it again. Think I just have to get myself in the right mindset. Pisses me off though because life really is better without drinking. I'm a much better and more productive person without alcohol.
>>
>>18314901
That's the biggest line of bullshit. Sounds like something from a house-flipping seminar.
>>
>>18314896
Most AAs that actually want to stop drinking go to therapy get on some sort of antidepressant and naltrexone or other drug that helps with cravings, at least a first. Also AA is very good therapy. It's not so bleak, depressing, and uncomfortable like in movies and TV. In cities especially, there are so many groups that range from small to large and have different themes.

>>
Fuck it, I'm gonna stop drinking. It's so pointless really, it's over after a while and you're worse than when you started and impedes development.
>>
>>18314861
Just don't buy alcohol.

I drank A LOT. Even now if I buy a bottle of whiskey I'll drink the whole fucking thing. in 1 night. But I can just simply not buy it, then I don't drink.

It is easy, just don't do it.
>>
>>18314861
You can't just quit drinking tho. You need to take it slowly as you might suffer from alchohol withdrawal syndrome which can be very deadly if you do it abruptly.
>>
>>18314910
It takes more than a few weeks. I could barely eat and sleep for two months after stopping drinking. I kept my heat off and apartment was around 50F-55F. It can be helpful to get on non-abusable medication to deal with depression.
>>
>>18314861
My brother did it with antabus.
>>
>>18314913

Not unless you are drinking 24/7, like 1 liter plus a day of hard alcohol. Then you taper off with like 3-5 drinks a day then it is fine to stop cold turkey.
>>
>>18314910
I had that same problem. I stayed up all night just watching tv, reading, playing a game, fucking went on an hour long walk. Just could not go to sleep till 5am in the morning.
>>
People always pretend their alcohol withdrawals

Unless you're drinking hard alcohol the moment you wake up to go to sleep you're not going to die from withdrawals, you might lost sleep and feel out of your skin i suppose though.

If you drink beer even for 20 years straight after work and limit it to under 12 of them you will only have acute withdrawal symptoms
>>
>>18314864

This, just man up.

Grab a couple of books that are interesting for men, I suggest anything by charles buklowski

understand that the first two weeks are the worst - MASSIVE mood swings and depression.

Pick a hobby and stick with it.

Cut back slowly.

Drinking is usually because your life sucks.
So do something worth doing.
Be good to yourself.

You're not an addict though.

I remember finding months old rigs in my backpack with dirty ass cottons using sink water from the bathrooms at walmart to slam dope

I've even met alcoholics that wake up after a night of drinking, throw up blood and find a 4 loko that somebody didn't finish and he'd polish it off, right after he woke up.

>Did quitting help you mentally and professionally?

You don't buy any? It's that simple. If you don't buy it, you can't drink it. I tried buying some good stuff like grey goose vodka or spiced rum or dry whiskey or nice bottles of wine but I don't know man. If I see the bottles just sitting there, being unused I feel obligated to drink them.

That's why I just stopped trying to have a nice liqueur cabinet and since then I've cut my drinking back by like 250%. Just buy what you need, when you need it.

Antabuse helped me a lot. I still drank through it to an extent sometimes, but I would turn bright red and eventually get sick. Over time it conditioned me very well to associate drinking with getting sick.
>>

Pretty much.

I've seen people who pretty much can't function without without their fix and when they tried to change their ways so fast, they cough up blood , vomit, and had several restless nights because of the habits that's kicking in.

I had to sit down with a daughter of an alchoholic explaining to me what her dad went through and she can't bear seeing him in a vegetative state because he wants to change.

Hard to say. Beers to me are nothing, I could drink 6 in an hour and still drive perfectly fine. I drink beers when playing vidya or watching movies. If you can't control how many you drink in one sitting, then you're fucked.

For example; I drank 2 beers on friday night, 2 on saturday evening and 2 on sunday evening. If you buy a six pack and drink it all in one sitting then you might be.

I dunno. Never had an issue with quitting drinking. Been generally alcohol free for over 5 years.

I'll have about a three or four beers a year.

Marijuanna on the other hand. I'm addicted.
>>
FWIW I drink normally today. I had severe emotional issues, bipolar depression (I know it's often a bullshit diagnosis but I've been going through cycles since 12 and is undeniable regardless of the cause), I was godless, away from family, emotionally abusive relationship with a serious hardcore alcoholic, I drank enough alcohol often enough that my body was addicted, and I wasn't on my meds. I joined AA and stopped drinking completely for a year. My sponsor never felt that I was truly alcoholic. It is possible to be a heavy drinker with serious issues that can be resolved but not common if you get to the point of joining AA. I never had any issues with any drug in my life, though I didn't try much. I never abused pain pills or anything like that and don't like weed. I'd never hurt my family or friends from my drinking, just myself. It's best to assume you will never drink again and not fantasize about drinking normally again. If it were to ever get bad again I'll quit. I just felt empty and soulless at the time, and AA helped me find my way.

34 year old here. I used to drink 5 or 6 caguamas everyday after work. Did this for years. Finally I realized how fucking stupid and selfish I was being so I just quit one Tuesday afternoon. You don't need help. Outside forces can't change your decision for anything other than short term. You have to help yourself. You and only you. The world doesn't care. Friends come and go. The only constant in your life is self determination or lack of.

Guy, you need a life. If you keep too busy, you will have less time to hang around, be lazy and bored into drinking.
>>
It depends on how far deep you're in. If you're a severe alcoholic, quitting cold turkey can kill you.

I never got withdrawal symptoms and I've been to the point where I was drinking (unknown) quantities of beer every single day. I'd order pitchers to myself and drink from open to close.

Want to know what my wake up call is?
>Got black out drunk one night
>Wake up the next morning in an abandoned warehouse
>I'm covered in my own shit
>I took a shit on the floor apparently, laid down next to it and rolled around in it
>Go sit on the town square bench and have the final "wtf am I doing" push
>Have an embarrassing 5 mile walk home as people driving by can see shit stains on me

Honestly, it's hard to quit if you have nothing else to live for. You need something to push or motivate you to quit. For me, it was years of being a degenerate drunk with nothing to show for it and I wanted to get into self-employment and actually try to make it work.

My friend quit because a girl he met finally gave him an ultimatum to quit and he's glad she did.

Also, it helps to meet drunks that are older than you because that is your future if you don't quit. I met a guy who drinks 2 liters of vodka every single day. I also met a bar owner in his 60s who downs a 24 pack every single day.

You just need a reason to live or a goal in life to pursue.

At first, go to meetings. Be honest. Listen, maybe don't talk except to say that you are hear to listen and be grateful.
Second, stay at home instead of going out for at least a month. Don't shop at stores with booze, don't go to restaurants with booze, don't go to parties with booze and don't buy booze. You will emerge later, but not yet.
Go easy on yourself. So you fucked up and have to stop drinking. The great achievements of man have been done in spite of alcohol not because of alcohol.
You don't have to not drink forever today, just not now. You don't live your whole life in a day, don't think of all the times you might like a drink, just think
About now.
Pay attention, you life and your outlook on life will improve so much. There is a stage after you quit drinking called, the pink cloud, wherein you no longer have tha neural depressant in you so you nerves start getting all excited all the time. It's pretty amazing.
And, don't give anything else up for like 6 mos.
Also, you are going to lose 15-100 lbs in the first year, depending on you level
Of drunkenness.

Why the fuck would you drink in the first place?
Alcohol tastes like shit.
Stop pretending to be cool infront of other and just don't drink.

the first step my uncle took was to take a knife to a can of beer and say 'You do not control me' while stabbing it (Make sure it's empty) after that he got help but he said that doing that helped him take dominance over his addiction. Clean for 3 years now and has an expecting wife, not saying it will always work but some people get started down the path to freedom in strange ways.
>>
>>18314998
>Alcohol tastes like shit
No one drinks for taste.

>Stop pretending to be cool
Most alcoholics don't think they're cool and hate themselves. They do it because they're depressed or have nothing to live for.

Most of the alcoholics I met drank at home doing what most people in this thread are doing.
>>
>>18314996
>so 3-4 a day is fine? I've honestly never been educated on alcohol abuse/addiction.

Well its just over the maximum recommended limit of liquor for men (by doctors), which is set at 23 units of alcohol a week. If you drink 4 beers a night, you will be at 28, just 5 over.

If you drink 3 a night, you'll be at 21 units a week.
>>
>>18314861
Do you want to stop drinking? then stop, it's that simple. If you get withdrawal symptoms slowly drink less day by day

Then stop doing alcohol and start doing better drugs
>>
>>18314861
Well, it starts with that walk down the high street. You see that pub? You don't go in.

Let's try something else. You see that booze in - I assume Tesco is allowed to sell booze? You push your what do you call it? Trolley? You just push it right on by.

But really I think you'll have to ultimately leave the UK and find somewhere else to live. Because if you get enough Brits together in one spot, they will go drinking at 6pm after work. It's almost hardwired into you lot. The only way to unwire yourself is to surround yourself with people who don't do that at 6pm but rather go do something else.
>>
>>18314998
Only person I drink in front of is my gf and she nags me none stop about it. If you think alcohol tastes bad then you're drinking the wrong ones.
>>
>>18314994
From what I have seen from people, lessening their daily intake helped them alot for quitting since main rehabs here are pretty expensive.

The things that drove them usually to change is that it's directly affecting their family as most of them didn't really care if they die from it. Talking to other people who wants to change helped them alot.
>>
>>18314996
>so 3-4 a day is fine? I've honestly never been educated on alcohol abuse/addiction.

No, it isn't fine and just leads back to where you are. But that guy said it, trying to get you to ween yourself free cause stopping cold turkey just leads to a bigger back lash. Cut back to 2 or 3 a day, and drink them slowly, make them last. If you feel like you can't just drink 2 or 3, drink them before heading to bed. Maybe that will fool your body into thinking you consumed your usual amount.
>>
>>18314991
Thank you for reminding people cold turkey from hardcore drinking leads to hospitalization, where they will give you an ethanol drip to keep you alive.
>>
>>18315001

I do. Turkey bourbon with the taste of how your chewing on spicey bark or white russian with the coffee after taste. The only thing I don't drink for taste is straight vodka.

I'm struggling myself for about a year now to quit.

I down about 2 liters of beer every other day, i don't have withdrawal problems or any of that, i get my buzz and dooze off to sleep.

The problem is from the 35 kg of fat ive put on since i started.

No clothes fit me anymore, im ashamed to go outside, and im horrified that i can't seem to stop.
>>
>>18314861
But no seriously. If you are drinking as a coping strategy for something else going on in your life, the first step is to be honest with yourself about the pain and how you're dealing with it.

There's two ways of changing things - getting rid of what's causing the pain in the first place or finding some other way of coping with the pain.

You could try overeating or video games or other kinds of hard drugs, for instance? Some people would beat their wives back in the old days, but that's frowned on now. You could fuck hookers all the time until your dick falls off? Just throwing out alternative means of coping here.

In the end though, you have to choose. That's why you're here. So choose and fuck off.
>>
Don't start. But since you're past that point, I've found vidya and exercise (you need both if you want to feel well) helps stop drinking.

Your drinking was nothing to do with it, it's just that you don't move much.
I was drunk 24/7 for 2 years and was skinnier then ever, i still drink now but most of the times i drink alone and don't leave the house or use car to get anywhere and i've gained quite a weight.

To get on the main topic, i would see myself quit drinking and smoking only if a have a child someday.
>>
>>18315016
A liter of beer a day, that's like 3 cans of beer at ~330ml? Murican cans are somewhat bigger. So that's like only half a sixpack in any case.

I've heard of guys talk about cases of beer a day, not just half a six pack. Methinks you have a ways to go before calling yourself an alky. But the weight is a problem. Don't become a fat Murican, being fat sucks.

>>

You need exercise, meetings and niacin. Keep hard candy around you. Your body is used to a tone of sugar from the booze, cravings can be countered by southing as simple as orange slices or hard candy.

Think of it as building a house. One brick at a time. Attack it from various angles, various tactics, both in planning and action. It'll take a while, don't get discouraged.
- First stop buying it regularly, so if you feel the urge you have to go out and get some. Hard to do after 11pm in most places. Stop buying special offers and deals.
Increase the number of steps/actions between feeling the urge and taking a sip. Make it harder to acquire upon the urge.
Then, don't buy a ten pack, then stop buying four packs, them commit to only buying one bottle at a time. The embarrassment of going to the shop multiple times has an effect on your motivation to do so.
- Then stop drinking beer. It's too easy to start drinking and keep drinking. You could move to wine and spirits as they're more expensive and so harder to acquire and far easier to overdo, this magnifying negative effects and decreasing motivation to do it.
Then you'll notice that opening a bottle of wine means you'll likely finish it, or you'll have some left over for the next night which will trick you into drinking on consecutive nights, which is another thing to try to avoid. So maybe you buy one of the silly little 200ml bottles.
- Next, try to drink less often. If you drink to fall asleep, as I did for over ten years, just accept that it sucks the first few times, and you may have some sleepless nights.
The first night I went without drinking was a major milestone. Even though I relapsed I proved that I could do it. Next milestone was two nights in a row

More to tips to come. And yes, it really is worth it. Sleep better, think clearer plus other things perhaps only personal to me.
>>
>>18315028
I already answered that. you assumed im not an addict because I managed to quit without help.

its all willpower, telling people they need god or fucking medical treatment is akin to shooting yourself in the foot.
>>
Start by drinking LESS. Trying to stop all at once is harder because it only takes one weak moment to fail. If you drink every night, try for 6 nights a week. Once you can do that consistently, down to 5, and so on. Scaling back how much you drink works too- 2 beers to take the edge off is an improvement over getting hammered. That way, if you have a shot day and end up wanting to get trashed or whatever, you don't fail- you just make up for it the next day.
>>
Most people in this thread are normies who have never struggled with anything more than disappointing daddy and mommy.
I'd say do something to distract yourself until the liquor store closes. I've been sober about a week now.
I'm yet to have a normal night of sleep but I have to believe I'm getting better.

That's physical addiction with some issues and not a true addict. There is a difference. There are people who piss blood every day and drink from morning until night, can't function in life at all, do and say terrible things they'd never do sober, black out 50% or more of their days, etc. And not matter what they do, if they take one sip, they can't stop.

Basically my whole day is getting up, getting boozed , eating , sleep.

Im more horrified by this than by amount i drink. Its like i can't escape this fucking shithole ive sunk in----- wich makes me drink to forget.

I agree with this. Since most addicts here that I saw didn't really take any meds as a substitute.

Most of them worked their ass off to get their minds away from their old habit.

I was just saying that some of the things that I have observed from working near a reformation center here.

When I was working late at night, I can hear some people crying outside because of how shitty they felt.

It's different from person to person from what I have seen, some stay there for 3 months and they're fine. Some stays for more than a year just to get clean.

Those are just idiots, you can be a functioning addict. You don't have to black out every day and piss blood to be called a addict.

Even if you drink to the point where you black out everyday you can still quit on your own with enough willpower, but they don't want to cause they would rather black out and piss blood

Alcoholism is as much a physical dependence as a self-destructive routine. If you want to sober up you need to replace everything you did that led to drinking. The group that drinks with you, the free time that allowed you to drink constantly, and the whatever hole you were trying to fill with drinking.

If you have severe alcohol addiction, when you go cold turkey, you can black out and go psychotic, end up on life support machines in a hospital somewhere.

Slowly beating the illness, slowly tapering off any way you can is the only option.
