The only stigma I can see is that
1) 3d printing/casting with any sort of quality is expensive.
2) It makes you look like a snowflaker if you would actually invest the money into original models like that.(still pretty awesome though)

I've found that the gold standard is a combination of 'it doesnt look like total shit' and 'you very clearly tried and worked hard on this'

Usually that means having a painted army with things that are very clear after a quick explanation. Nobody wants to play against literal green and tan army men on bases when the opponent calls them guardsmen, but if you scrathbuild a cool ass alien looking guy and then deck him out in tau gear then most people would be fine letting that count as a fire warrior.

I've also found that scratchbuilding a ton of super overpowered and costly units to save money on a hobbycrusher top tier tournament list will also earn you ire.

Basically you want to give off the vibe that you did it because you love the game while avoiding the vibe that you're too cheap to buy models but still want to crush people.

Terminators are a poor frontline unit because of their cost, sure you will get first blood but all the opponent needs to do is stay 12 inches away with his vehicles to completely negate everything you are trying to do

Go for a lord and 2 groups of 5 terminators with either a heavy flamer or a gignigga autocannon, mixing a few combis in there to complement the cannon is a better option than autist spam, plus you get to use the lords rerolls and he himself is a beast, that plus a sorcerer is a nasty backfield unit that has to be dealt with, rather than just avoided

The warptime helps keep up and just be a tough nuisance. plus they are flexible and i don't mind paying for them in a 75/100 power list. I was thinking of keeping my Lord with my bikers with flamers and chainswords and maybe a couple of preds for longrange support and some cultist spam for backline objectives.

Am I wrong in thinking that Warptime overwrites the no movement rule for new deepstrike?

It's relatively easy to get hold of the material (asteroids are mined extensively and materials science is advanced) for a spaceship and the actual physical assembly is not prohibitively extensive. HOWEVER in my campaign setting FTL travel is done through a warp rip-off and the only people who can navigate it are virgin orphan girls of caucasian lineage. They have to be hooked up to a special terminal (which is very expensive) which causes a total sensory override leaving them blind, mute, deaf, etc. and they'll most likely die if ever detached from it.

Govts usually raise a certain number of these girls themselves and speed/accuracy/safety of not-Warp travel correlates with their education (high level understand of mathematics and astrophysics) and emotional state (sadness/trauma are less likely to draw not-Warp predators) so they go through academies of varying levels of cruelty designed to produce a high quality output. Neither of these are essential to their use though so if you're trying to build a space ship on the cheap there are plenty of slavers and human farmers who sell girls you can use, without the training.

Question about Dreadclaws. Do I have to glue the block for the stand to connect to claw, or is it possible to magnetize the block without it getting too wobbly? If I have to, I'll just glue it on, but it looks odd off the stand is all.

Personally I'm in plenty of heroic games and I'm having a great time.

There's nothing wrong with gritty or 'realistic' games though. They're not to my tastes, but I won't talk down to anyone for enjoying them.

What does annoy me is when people try to assert grit and 'realism' where they aren't necessary. Going on about wounds being infected in D&D, or trying to make gunpowder the 'real' way even though you're in a setting where the four alchemical elements are the foundations of reality, not the periodic table.

People act like 'realism' is a necessary component of everything, when it really isn't. Thematic, narrative and metaphysical things can define and underpin a setting just as effectively, creating just as consistent and logical a world even if it operates by different rules.

It's what's trendy in popular culture right now, see Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. Couple this with the culture of condescension towards "Sue" characters plus a general belief in moral relativism and you've got an environment where everyone is disinclined to enjoy the simplicity of good vs. evil stories. They often see them as juvenile and childish.

It's just modern taste, and eventually the pendulum will swing back in the King Arthur, Lord of the Rings good vs. evil type direction.
