Hey fa/tg/uys
What's the best Wild West system to you?
I'm looking for a good Wild West system to start a campaign in. I was thinking about using Boot Hill, but it looks like you die waaaayyy too easily and there's not really any opportunity for the PCs to bond with their characters before they die. Any other suggestions? I'm willing to try Weird West systems as long as it's still aesthetically wild west for the most part with revolvers and neat hats.
Bonus points if the LeMat Revolver is included in the system
Definitely try classic Deadlands, I've been running a much less fantastical version focusing more on the apache scalping and fighting mexicans, very much enjoying it
>>53727257
Oh, and it has a LeMat revolver in the core book
>>53727257
I second this. I've had loads of fun with the old Deadlands system, with supernatural beasties and without. Tossing cards and poker chips around the table helps get you in the mood, and the game's got the systems you need for starving in the desert or filing down the sights on your iron for a tiny edge on that quickdraw.
Our current GM has told my group about an upcoming campaign he's hoping to run come the natural conclusion of our current game and he's wanting us to create our PCs in the meantime. I'm thinking of going for a Wood Elf (based originally on my Morrowind character) and have been looking into Sindarin vocabulary for inspiration.
The 5e Handbook encourages a family name and I've been stuck on this for a couple of days. I've been thinking of 'Tautirith', which is a compound word (taur: great wood, forest; tirith: watch, guard, vigilance) but I'm not sure if it's grammatically correct.
If anyone could let me know if Tautirith is a suitable Sindarin name (family or otherwise) or give a name that'd be more suitable, that'd be fantastic.
Yes, I know I sound like a ginormous faggot but I'm really fussy about character names; that and my DM is a Tolkien fan and linguaphile.
You shouldn't feel like a faggot for putting effort into your character.

>Yes, I know I sound like a ginormous faggot
Are you new here? This is nothing.
OP bumping, just wondering if anyone's gonna throw me a bone or if I should take this to /lit/ instead.

Should stats dictate how you roleplay or just be there to determine outcomes of certain situations?
>>53726565
You shouldn't roleplay directly against your stats, that said there's no reason a dumb person can't have a good plan.
Our close group of friends are about to head into 5e as having played rpgs before, what can we expect from 5e? And how is the combat this edition?
ALRIGHT MAGGOTS, GIVE ME A GOOD ONE-SHOT FOR A LOW-LEVEL PARTY
I'm curious about the main nationalities of this board.
Where are you from, fa/tg/uys and ca/tg/irls, and what's the irl tabletop rpg scene like in your neck of the woods?
Personally, I'm from Australia.
>>53725695
>Personally, I'm from Australia.
Well this thread got off to the worst possible start
Italy but away from home
>>53725695
I'm from Illinois in America. DnD is booming alongside board games. We have a slight surplus of FLGS's but they are not made equal. It's very common to see historicals, infinity, war machine, etc at stores but warhammer is king with a lot of people switching to AoS.
Most common phrase is "I hate AoS story but the game is fun"
4chan knows everything, I trust in you

It'll air in the timeslot immediately following Spice & Wolf S3.
I hope you checked what thread you killed. Was it worth it?
4e thread? I'm about to run a 43 campaign this summer just for the heck of it. I know it's a pretty flawed system, but it holds a special place in my groups hearts, since it's what we all started with.

4e campaign*
>>53724461
Don't, honestly.
>>53724461
Have you tried 4e Dark Sun or 4e Eberron?
The system handles those settings really well, Eberron moreso than Dark Sun, but 4e Dark Sun is still fantastic
How're y'alls enjoying Amonkhet limited?
Tired of randomly losing to busted-ass rares yet?
>>53724318
you should prioritize hard removal
Tired of the game feeling like literal Hearthstone, where if you get slightly behind on board you're just fucked unless you draw your busted-ass rare.
I'll just leave this right here.
Imagine you right now, keeping the same body and capabilities, live in one of the many countless civilized worlds in the Imperium of Man. The wealth you have in real life reflect the wealth you have in the 40K world. You are likely not Highborn but at least not the underclass. The Question is, what can you do to obtain power?
Suggestions:
>Common Imperial Citizen - Die and never become important.
>Planetary Defense Force (PDF) - Maybe you can be a simple enlisted soldier but officer jobs may be granted from purely corrupt practices making it impossible for you. If not then you still need to be fit enough to be a soldier unless the quality of the local PDF is terrible.
>Chaos Cult - If you are charismatic you may become a Renegade Demagogue, beware the Ordo Hereticus.
>Gue'vesa - Fucking Weeb, though only if your civilized world is at the east of the Imperium.
>Ecclesiarchy - I am unsure if there are rules that ban regular commoners from being priest but if not you can join this and rise up to be a Confessor and lead some Adeptus Sororitas and Fraternis Militia Army.
>Inquisition - The chances of becoming an inquisitor is flimsy but maybe you can be lucky, or unlucky, enough to become an acolyte for a low standard inquisitor.
Probably Unobtainable:
>Imperial Guard - The best PDF forces become Imperial Guard, it is equivalent if you are right now a member of the special forces of the richest countries, I guess that is a likely no.
>Adeptus Astartes - lol no
>Every Hereditary Role from Planetary Governor, Adeptus Administratum Senior Positions, etc. - Since you are unlikely born into senior political positions yourself count this option out.
So What would you do to obtain power in the 40K world, given you keep the same mental and physical capabilities?
If i was ported exactly as I am i'd probably join the PDF. Maybe try and work my way towards guard, though I doubt I'd make it. Only reason I haven't joined up here is because I don't feel that there is a strong enough need. If I was a member of the Imperium, under assault from all sides and with the survival of my nation and race in question, I'd feel obligated to do my part, however small that may be.
I would kill myself

You will be rebuilt as a mindless Servitor.
>Enter an inn
>The barmaids are wearing chainmail from head to toe

that sounds like it would chafe
>>53721475
I thought chainmail wasn't historically accurate.
>I'm playing a monk
>No, not that kind of monkHow would you play a christian monk?
...By playing a Cleric?
>>53718196
What do you mean, Christian monks don't know kung fu?
>>53718196
>debates in cloisters
>vineyard for bespoke wine
>fortified abbey walls
Emotion and scholarship, like scholarship and labor, were not incompatible. It was an excellent time to be alive.
Have you ever played a married character?
No, but now I want to play a group of spec ops hunting a Predator
3.5, had an Iron Mind with a wife and two sons. It really doesn't come up much, but when it does it can be a little heartwarming. I throw in some quirks too. He doesn't swear ever for instance, he might end up doing it around the kids after all.
Mostly he does his best to hide just what happens when he's away. It's not something he'd want to worry her with.
>>53717168
What system would be the best for that?
Old Interlock?
Savage Worlds?
GURPS?
Where do you rate other tabletop gamers? We have a huge mix of different groups here and it would be interesting to see how the current stereotypes and tiers look.
>Card game players (Yugioh, Magic, Netrunner)
>Wargamers (Warhammer, Infinity, Warmachine
>Roleplayers (D&D, Path finder, WoD)
>LARPERs (Foam swords, beanbags, cardboard armour)
>Board gamers (Risk, Settlers)
>Historical gamers (Only play historic games, usually custom systems to represent their pet era)
>Modelers (people who don't play any games just build models, military, fantasy or sci fi)
>Lore whores (only read novels, wikis and rulebooks for the fluff)
Which do you consider yourself to be as your primary tabletop interaction? How long have you been into the hobby?
I do a little of all of them, got into Warhams, Mtg, and D&D over the course of a year or two about 14-15 years ago, so Pathfinder didn't exist, neither did warmahordes afaik. Gf wants to try larping, so do I, but all the communities we've seen for It around here have been off-putting. I get super into the lore of everything, I miss when the Warhammer 40k fandom was still self aware about the satirical nature of the lore, and Mtg lore was centered around Dominaria, before the whole "new plane with 2-3 more planeswalkers every block" crap. I feel old now.

Best tier
>Historical Gamers
>Lore whores
Okay Tier
>Roleplayers
>LARPers
Shit tier
>Wargamers
>Card game players
Why are you even here other then that one thread tier
>Modelers
>Board gamers
Alright, talking Stereotypes here. Gross overly simplified stereotypes.
Card Games: Autists/Cool nerds. People who gravitated towards CCGs but believe themselves too normy RPG or mini-game.
Wargamers: This depends on the game but at worst, autists. GW games attract nice, but dumb players who love models and minis and hate money. Warmachine attracts hyper autists who need to be great at the game and Infinity attracts fans of tactical shooting games and military fanboys who were burned by GW.
Roleplayers: Pussies and autists who can't stand people disagreeing with them or obstructing their path. Roleplaying gamers who steer directly away from other games in my experience usually just want an outlet for a power fantasy of some sort. They can't Wargame because that might include losing. They tend to freak out when bad things happen to their characters.
LARPERs: Depends. Either maximum autist neckbeard or minimum. Maxo-beard rules lawyers who treat the LARP as his own little kingdom. The worst kind of nerd. Alternatively you get more physically minded players who love RPGs and stories, but for some reason see little fun in sitting around rolling dice (they also probably love sword fighting.)
Board Gamers: Entry level games like Risk/Monopoly played frequently means they want something MORE but aren't even sure what. Harder boardgames Catan(yuck), Ticket 2 Ride, Arkham Horror, Cosmic Encounter, etc usually signifies a practical minded gamer who isn't willing to put in prep time for other sorts of tabletop games, but wants to be able to have a great night with friends.
Historical Gamers: Haven't met any. I'm, not convinced they exist.a
Modelers: Every modeler I know also plays the game their models are for.
LoreWhores: also usually engage in another aspect.
Again this is a gross oversimplification, and me only talking about my own bad experiences.
I consider myself a Roleplayer, a Lore lover, and a Wargamer. Though we play boardgames in my group too.

That one game, with the moving things, high number of towers or w/e.
We have this thread all the damned time.
This is the plot of a dozen 30+ year scifi short stories.
It's always about Tower of Hanoi.
So I am bit confused about this guy Matthew Colville. It came to a head when he went on the official D&D Podcast and was saying some really weird elitist things and random stuff about 4E that just didn’t make any sense to me.
One of the comments on the podcast Facebook feed was “Oh no he is in his Youtube Persona”. So, is this an act or something?
On the podcast -
1. He starts saying that “Certain people” shouldn’t DM games and Tito quickly shuts him down. It sounded like standard elitist BS. Yet this is the guy everyone says wants to grow the hobby?
2. He had this bizarre rambling about why players disliked 4E / compared it to Warcraft because D&D lost players when WoW was big. (I don’t know how you could look at a 4E player’s stack of power cards and cool downs and not see why people compared 4E to WoW.)
3. Colville claims 4E was superior in terms that that it allowed players to truly embrace roleplay and creativity. And apparently shared narrative settings like Forgotten Realms are terrible because they are limiting. (Mike Mearls recently talked about why Forgotten Realms is such a great setting to start new players in and I find myself agreeing with that.)
It was very confusing to listen to and I was wondering near the end if he was simply trying to troll certain parts of the internet? After all, this was the dude that I kept on hearing positive things about. Why would he waste 40% of his time on the official D&D podcast praising the previous edition? Anyone know whats up?
>>53702131
Well I can't say I know anything about this podcast, but I've watched most of his videos. There's some good stuff in there, and some stuff I personally disagree with. He can be a bit of a cunt, and he certainly has his own vision of how things should be and is spreading that philosophy, but there are still some very helpful videos by the guy. In the end, he's human. He's flawed, and he shouldn't be taken as some sort of authority, but if you have the capacity to sift the good from the bad his videos are a decent resource for newish dms or old dms who are looking for a different perspective.
Colville is a hack who thinks all settings should be creatively sterilized to feature the same ethnic and sexual composition because otherwise people might get their feelings hurt.
>>53702131
As to your points:
4E doesn't have cooldowns any more than 3.5 does.
Forgotten Realms is a boring setting dominated by GMPCs so I can see why someone might find that limiting. When every corner is mapped out there isn't a lot of room to create.
>>53702131
He sounds like your average /tg/ shitposter.
