He calls him a brutal fuck because him and his Legion use fire-based weaponry at almost every given opportunity. Which is funny coming from the Gorgon, who flip flops between caring about humanity and being as cold as his namesake, who's Legion absolutely hated their humanity after his death.

By comparison, the Salamanders are known throughout the Imperium as being one of the few Legions that actually gave more than a passing glance of concern for regular humans, before and after the Heresy. In Forgotten Sons, Heka'tan goes out of his way to protect the former remembrancer stuck with them on their Stormbird when it gets shot down, and goes to find her and make sure she's ok when she doesn't come back right away during the court hearing.

IW have absolutely no grounds for calling out Salamanders on being 'humane' when they're one of the most inhuman of the Legions.
>>
>>53705419
That's the Salamanders, not Vulkan himself. Individual personalities in a legion can vary wildly and let's be real, Ferrus would not be happy with how the Iron Hands are running his legion.
>>
>>53705481
Regardless, Manus' criticism is of Vulkan and his Legion as a whole, since they're all pyros. And that's still kind of a moot point when you consider all of the other horrific weapons Astartes bring to bear on live humans on a regular basis. Chain-weapons are a staple of every Legion, and I'd consider them pretty damn brutal too, even without considering their biggest fans, the SW and WE.

We also don't have a whole lot on Vulkan himself in terms of how he regards regular humans. Most of his development as a character has been Istvaan V and onward, in varying states of dismemberment.

I'm actually really curious as to how the immediate aftermath of the siege of terra worked out

we all know how the situation in orbit was, but how were the last hours on the ground? Did the White Scars slaughter the routing traitors? How long did the Loyalist Primarchs take to arrive?

I heard there's going to be a Scouring book series, and I'm intruiged, despite the amount of Skub it will undoubtetly produce, I'm actually curious about the Primarchs post-Heresy interactions.

Given how massively OP Archmagi are in the fluff, would it be possible for one to have his own comfy hobby hangar or something? Random half-assembled nonsense scattered around, storeroom off to one side filled with assorted parts giant servo-arms built in so you can actually move big stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a Magos Reductor or something tinkering with random war machines in his downtime and making his own random Frankenstein artillery.
>>
>>53706539
Better job than Ultras.
>>
I've been thinking a bit recently, regarding the Unknown Legions, particularly with all the hoopla going on over Dark Imperium. Originally, the Unknown Legions existed to serve as a vague origin point for players to base their personal chapter of Marines on if they didn't like any of the 18 others. This allowed for creativity and open-ended-ness, which was the prevailing mindset of the time. However, these days this is not the case. The Unknown Legions are strictly off limits, not only as a origin source but for any kind of fluff material. Now, they exist only in the literal sense, beyond that they have no value and no connection.

Now, what do you think it would be like if they were revealed? Still dead, still a point in history, but no longer this impermeable 'Do Not Touch' field on the setting? What if they get utilized in 40k, born again as part of Cawl's chad-marine project? Would it really be all that bad if we knew the Unknown Legions? Their original purpose died decades ago, now they simply just 'are'.
>>
>>53706730
I thought that was most magos worth their salt. If they can merit running a structure of their own, they'd probably have their own workshop or area for personal projects.
>>
>>53707275
Only if they can make suitably different and cool looking miniatures for them. It's GW so the first thing they need to know with an idea like this always going to be: how is it going to sell miniatures?
>>
>>53707275
This is something I would like to see; then again I get curious as fuck so it makes me ask what the fuck they would be like. Since all the known legions are based on historical examples of past cultures I bet that they would be some form of Aztec tie in and either Zulu/Maori perhaps?

Hopefully none of the weaboo like shit, but knowing FW... at most something Feudal Japan inspired?

>>
>>53706574
Yeah, that'll be interesting to see.

The existing fluff has the Blood Angels going berzerk after Sanguinius dies. They all leave their defensive positions in a suicidal rush, and when Horus dies all the daemons disappear. That makes the BA charge less suicidal and they start pushing the traitors back. The Scars have been defending the spaceport that they had previously taken (where Mortarion fought the Khan). They're in shock at what the Blood Angels are doing, but then they join the rout. Canonically, Angron shakes his fist as he boards a transport and everyone leaves before the UM and DA fleets can trap the traitors..
>>
>>53707275
They're not worth putting much effort into, since so few people play in an early-Great Crusade setting.

But yeah, they might as well tell us what they had in mind for the lost legions. Now that they were canonically not present during the Heresy, they don't serve the purpose of being a blank slate for you to play with.
>>
>>53707651
Low sales volume.

Japanese plastic model kits are a lot cheaper than GW's because they sell an order of magnitude more. Short-run resin model airplane kits (for obscure subjects that haven't been covered by the mainstream guys) are pricey and low in quality, a lot like how FW kits were in the beginning. FW's now selling more kits than those guys are, so they've upped the quality significantly. Still expensive, though.

Also, resin models are fairly labor-intensive to cast.

Tbh, it's probably a combination of the historical aspects, the sense of scale, the power-level of the setting (Big E, Primarchs, and events that carried great weight through history into 40k), the fact that the setting wasn't at 100% Grimdark yet, special weapons and armor you don't really get to use in 40k, as well as the game itself being 'relatively' balanced.

As for the autism levels of the thread, well, we ARE on /tg/. It's no /a/ or /v/, but we manage

>>
>>53713374
Their only problem is how much they cost, especially the first five. In a large game, a full squad can be... well, they'll still be points-inefficient, but they can work because you'll have a lot of other units that can take advantage of the -1T that rad causes.
>>
>>53713513
It's a typo. Should be Lastrum.
>>
>>53713146
Falchion or Russ with a bodyguard.
>>
>>53713411
Magnus blasted it off the table last weekend. I was playing sacrificial offering and wanted to Outflank it, rolled to seize as a joke and got a 6 (of fucking course) which let him counter-deploy Magnus and a shitload of Sekhmet against me. It actually worked out in my favor because he ended up using Magnus against a fairly small portion of my army while 100 Zealot, Rending cultists took the other half of the board. Game ended 12-10 I believe.

The best it's ever done was actually in a 40k game, against AdLance. My opponent was keeping his Knights close together and my templates scattered perfectly, then I rolled three 6s and got them all at the same time.
>>
>>53713522
So, kinda pricey like a lot of Marines in regular power armor. I'm noticing a trend here.
>>
>>53713522
I think the other problem is the general meta with 40k right now as well. Because so much stuff is either poisoned, wounding on a flat roll, or extra high strength to begin with, dropping a unit's toughness by 1 isn't that big of a deal.
>>
>>53713861
Their base cost of 30 points/marine for two bolt pistols, rad grenades, and counter-attack is a record high unless rad grenades are really that valuable. Even heavy support dudes cost less (27 points) but come with a heavy bolter or heavy flamer.
>>
>>53713900
In 40k I could see that, but my experience with 30k is that are still a lot of S4 and S5 weapons (and not all of them wielded by Marksman vets). Volkite chargers or + rad is great, as an example.
>>
>20 plastic MkIII or MKIV Marines from GW is $100
>the same plastic kit plus 20 shoulders, 10 heads, and 5 torsos is $115 from forgeworld

What did GW mean by this?
>>
>>53713957
This is probably just differences in metas to be honest. Nobody here takes big blocks of infantry anymore except the Space Wolves player and, surprise, surprise, they're really bad.
>>
>>53713932
Meanwhile Vets with a power weapon and a special rule cost 22 and terminators with power weapons and combi-bolters cost 30-35.
Podcast people saying "acquire PotL, disregard tacticals" are but spouting the ugly truth. And I doubt anything's going to change considering the success of BaC, both influenced by, and influencing the Legion rulebook.

Another factor is that prior to the Age of Darkness red books, Vets, Tacs, and Assault squads were more expensive. They got points reductions while Destroyers did not (and Breachers only got a minor price cut for <15-man squads, and above 15 they went up). FW's excuse was "we didn't have enough data" but that's because no one was taking them due to their cost.

If I could make one change to the game, it'd be to reduce the amount of AP3 blast weapons there are. The real-life role of artillery is not meant to disintegrate armored units, and it's just too powerful and free of compromise in the game.
>>
>>53714037
It's like NL Raptors vs Assmarines. The Assmarines come out ahead by sheer points cost.
>>
Fuck Pride of the Legion and fuck metal boxes. Footslog or bust.
>>
>>53713783
Well, that was Magnus. He does that. Do you have any pics? Titans are always cool. Can you pound them to death with other methods, or do you basically need multiple D shots to kill one feasibly?

Personally I'm thinking that I'll never get one because I find they zoom the scale out a bit much to enjoy anything else without other Titan maniples or shit like Ordinatii, but they're certainly cool set pieces and at some point I'm totally bringing the Genetor Fleet against our local Lucian and his Warhound.

>>53713550

I've never seen Russ without the full complement of a maxed out Spartan, actually. Once with two escorting Land Raiders full of those unique SW termies, they pounded some poor Word Bearers to bits. Perhaps a little overkill, honestly, but even though I dislike the SM boxes' looks it was an impressive show of force.

>>53714118

I would say so, given not everyone likes to rock deathstars or superheavies. I would prefer to stay away from the bigger ones, but somehow my list wound up dumping 900 points into a maxed out Archmagos with Myrmidons in an almost maxed out Macrocarid scouting forward with the doom eggwhisks. I can divide that up into two or three units given how much supporting Treides does anyway, but I still didn't notice half my 4k list was two units before I saw a similar composition with assault centurions in a Raider in 40k.
>>
>>53714178
Honestly, power armored Marines need points re-evaluations. Most choices simply can't accomplish what they're intended to do, especially when there are better options for just a smidge more.

And really, there needs to be less AP3 Blast in the game. You can't have anything on the table outside of a metal box or Terminator armor without it getting blown to shreds by pie plates. Yeah, blast weapons are meant to be dangerous, but at this point it's just silly. This is why people play drop pods against artillery lists.

A lot of non-termie legion-specific units are based on the old cost of Veterans, some others on the base cost of Assault or Breacher squads.
Thus, those units are now overcosted, and in a world where everything not inside a metal box is food for artillery.

I don't play Iron Warriors specifically but I think Autocannon Turret + Lascannon sponsons are generally pretty good, no matter what version you're playing. It lets them punch above their weight against things like Terminators and vehicles.

On the subject of Predators, are fire-preds worth taking outside of Sallies, or are they a niche choice?
>>
>>53714549
>Honestly, power armored Marines need points re-evaluations.
I dunno, Vets and Tacs already got cheaper, and the latter only cost 12.5 points per marine. The other marine squads could be cheaper, but not those two.

But I totally agree with less AP3 blast. It's like they're all tactical nukes at this point.

>>53714865
In armored breakthrough the lascannons make more sense because you're more likely to actually fire them.
>>
>>53715157
I'm just reading the Titanicus book, actually. Fuck, those things are cool.

I wonder if there's a Mechanicum faction that rejects emotional suppression since the mightiest of machines do in fact possess them? Titans feel rage, happiness, sadness at comrade's deaths, wariness at new Princeps, etcetera. Have these Mech argue for emotional mastery and control over elimination, might be interesting to see a group of Malagra who are perfectly normal people to talk to, augments aside, then in combat channel a serious dose of Cold Raeg. They'd be rather disconcerting to experienced social manipulators, since they have perfect control over their reflexes and emotions despite still having them. You could butcher one's order in front of him and if he needed to be polite at that moment he'd be outwardly calm and polite, but if you gave him good enough reasons to kill you he'll be exulting about it all the while.

That's unfortunate. I've been in a similar situation before, where if I wanted to play against fully-painted armies or BFG fleets I had to do the painting myself. I gave up and we just play board games. (They work better for our group anyway, since they're multiplayer.) Fluff's important too, especially for making 30k games fun.

If you keep trying, you might as well use the Eye of Horus podcast's Centurion rules. It's really just a set of restrictions they gave themselves because Australia has a tank-heavy meta (because GW plastics cost about as much as FW resin there... so no one's buying BaC/BoP boxes). Small games, mostly infantry.

But in 2000 points I can run a Chogorian Brotherhood army with a Praetor, 2 squads of 6 outriders, a squadron of 6 jetbikes, a vet squad, a tactical support squad, two javelins, and a small heavy support squad.

Easy enough to run an Orbital Assault or jump pack-based army too. Or terminators using PotL. Sacrificial offering works fine at 2k points. There's no need for armies to be samey.
>>
>>53715990

Not a chemist obvs but I've bought a good amount from chinamen and while the quality varies (ordered some Kakaphoni, turned out being dark grey and impossible to clean mould lines) FW pretty consistently has excellent quality.

Maybe it's just the price tag but I feel the resin is just more durable and easier to shave off flash/lines without gouging it. Resin anything is slower to paint regardless of who made it though in my experience.

It's literally "Historical 40k Wargaming" in what actual or possible alternative world *wouldn't* HH be a nexus of autism?

I mean, I love me some Solar Aux and all, but there's no goddamn way I'm getting out a thing of paint chips to figure out exactly which light grey a Dracosan should be...*

*: I've literally done exactly that.
>>
>>53711323
Forge World originally went after military modelers who were interested in 40k. We're a little nuts - we can tell you which colors the Wehrmacht used on their tanks in which years, which of those paints were factory- or field-applied, and what sets an M4A3E8 apart from other Sherman tanks. When we make model tanks or planes, which usually pick a specific one that there are photos of and match it exactly, serial number and all.

So when FW made a future-historical wargame... hell yeah, you bet we're going to be all over it.

The black books and their retelling of events/elaborating Legion histories only forms a more cohesive identify for each Legion rather than 40k's anything goes, vibe.

Played my Custodes against Iron Warriors last night and did decently well. Lost a decent amount of men thanks to phosphex and AP 2 spam, but totally made up for it by running a 450 point Hetaeron squad and Valdor into Perturabo and a his personal Terminators. Butchered his squad in one round and Pert was knocked down to one wound; died next phase.

Exactly. Every weapon Astartes bring to bear against their foes is powerful, but flat out overkill and even psychologically damaging for regular humans. Bolt weapons will blow a human torso wide open if it connects. Chain weapons send gore flying with every swing, and the roar of the blades would fuck with all but the stoutest of men. Volkite weapons are literally martian death rays that will vaporize a man on contact. Plasma weapons against men would just consume anything they hit. Rotor cannons spit out absurd amounts of shots with the intention of mowing down men en masse. A melta, like a plasma weapon, will just vaporize flesh. Hell, a Space Marine's fists would be legally defined as deadly weapons, and they can probably get pretty creative with their hand-to-hand kills if they wanted to. This doesn't even include all of the more exotic weapons that aren't fielded by the masses. And Ferrus has beef with Vulkan's preference of 'flamers'? Thats rich
>>
>>53724757
flamers have the tendency to have quite the spread, hosing anyone in range in flames, that doesn't really fit the "protecting civillians" scheme they got going, sure a bolter or chainsword leaves gore in it's wake, but flamers set the entire town on fire.

Almost every other Energy Weapon can be considered precise next to a flamethrower.

They're in different circumstances, the DG usually operate in hellholes not fit for human colonization and xenos don't have human rights.
And it's not like that stuff is indiscriminate. They are described as flooding critical tunnels with phosphex but most of the fighting they're using bolter and blade, and even their bare gauntleted hands, instead of going all meme-y with chem and rad.
I wish their melee combat aspect was more emphasized.
By the way, do we know of DG friendships with members of other legions?

Hence why they fought in already-poisoned worlds, unlike the Saladmancers.
And even then, you can rad the fuck out of a whole world, but humans are stubborn enough that they will not only survive in there, but prosper and fortify.
Agrellan is a fortified hive world yet the sand is as radioactive as Baal's, and they have *Pollution* radstorms. Krieg yields more regiments than Necromunda, and it was ravaged by 500 years of atomic warfare.
Only Eldar give a fuck about a planet having grass, Anon. And Vulkan did good in burning the shit out of them.

Death Guard didn't really get buddy-buddy with anyone besides the Luna Wolves/SoH. As for tolerating one another, the only loyalist Legions that at least tolerated the Death Guard (according to the allies matrix) were the Blood Angels and Iron Hands. Everyone else kept their distance. A lot of primarchs also didn't like Mortarion, either for his style of combat or because he's a stinky peasant.

>One man can murder a world given sufficient time and the fortitude to wield the blade again and again and again until death's work is done.

Well let's take contemporary Earth for example. A quick Google search reveals that around 360,000 people are born every day and 150,000 people die every day. This means that the population increases by
>210,000 every single day
>8,750 every hour
>145.8 every minute
>2.4 every second

...and that's just to stop the population from growing. I'm going to have to disagree with Mort here. Those sort of kill numbers don't seem sustainable for a man with a sword.

Yeah you can. When you consider that only a certain range band of the population is capable of breeding at any given time, you focus your efforts on them first. >>
>>53735312
French's was better. Aaron's was a bit raw and a bit too much about how devastated he was and how he was feeling and what it was like for him for a mate to die.
French did it right and talked about how much of a dude Bligh was and how properly eulogised him. You could tell they were bros, but French didn't cry about himself, he wanted to get across how much he thought his friend was great.

Oh and the thing about ADB having to explain to autists with steadily decreasing subtlety and patience that HH not moving to 8th for a while is because the guy who literally writes the rules up and died, and them just not getting that and arguing with him about it, was on bolter and chodesword. Mechanicum Cyber-Occularis. They have a 12" bubble of -1 cover saves, grant Interceptor to friendlies within 3", provide LoS for blasts like Nuncio-voxes and if worst comes to worst are T3 1W 3+ armour Stealth models with BS2 TL laspistols and Jet Packs, so they're not completely worthless in a fight for 15ppm. Also single models and are bought as wargear so no Kill Points or Scoring/Denial, so you can use them to block movement, force Tank Shocks and generally be dicks.

Malcadors look like they'd be pretty scary with -1 to enemy cover.

>they destroyed plenty of perfectly fine worlds.
That was in the heresy, when Poison ships were unleashed on pilgrimages of pollution.
Before that, the DG were the designated rad-fighters, the ones that would make planetfall on deathworlds den to nightmarish creatures or mutated erstwhile-humans that, like the targets of the early War Hounds, deserved not the illumination of the Great Crusade, but the darkness of extinction.
In fact, since only they were expected to survive in those hellish conditions, this meant they usually had no mortal allies they could share the battlefield with, setting them further appart from the common mortals the Salamanders were usually deployed alongside with. I'm never making less of any legion, but fighting side by side with the common man on a world with a promising future for humanity was an opportunity the DG didn't have very often, instead being used to unleash the echoes of old night on hellscapes the crusade had given up on.
>>
>>53737335
I wanted an explanation as to why they went that way. Why they'd go against old canon and what reasons lay behind it. Also when Goulding said the Emperor planned the Heresy, I said that was a retarded move that robbed the Heresy of all pathos and tragedy and asked him what the overall meaning of the Heresy was if those two were removed, and he never answered.

>>
>>53737345
that is not entirely correct, like the War Hounds they were called for special cases that required extreme measures, but like the 12th they also were a semi independent Expedition Fleet for quite a while, and The Death Guard, just like the World Eaters destroyed more than one good world to force compliance, where other Legions did it more cleanly and effectively.

Pretending that the DG only came upon doomed Deathworlds during their crusade, is naive and plain false.
