Are those check rails or is that some dual gauge shit going on there?
>>

Appears to be a turntable. So checkrails.
>>
>>1007466
That's what i would have thought but for them being really far apart, on the outside, extending quite far back along the approach roads and only on some of the roads and with no whatever the feeder kinks are called- plus I've just noticed a set of genuine check rails at the edge of the turntable. I reckon it might be dual gauge shenanigans.

Why are the new Skodas going to be bidirectional? All lines including the new line 3 have loops. And for temporary construction works some of the Varios are bidirectional, as are all the CBC tram-trains.

Sleep in a hammock.
A LOT lighter (and smaller) than tent/sleeping pad.
As long as you can find two trees 9-15 feet apart it sets up much faster than a tent. You don't have to clear the ground of rocks and twigs.
The ground doesn't have to be level, or dry.
>>
Bags will destroy your frame paint or worse if you have a carbon frame. Use tape/roll cuts of old tube around the frame where the bags are in contact to prevent that.

Yea so if u fall out in ur sleep you land on rocks nd break ur head, land on sticks nd stab urself, land on a wet hill and roll down into the ocean and drown

How many bikes is a good number of bikes to have?

if you're still novice enough to be asking this question, then the answer is that you can never have enough.
>>
n+1
n = the number of bikes you currently have.

Currently I have five at my house.
>steel road bike
>90's rigid mtb commuter
>90's cyclocross bike
>80's rigid mtb
>another 90's rigid mtb for parts and soon to be fixed up for a friend

In my parents' garage I have the "cemetery" of old steel mtb's, BMX bikes, and forgotten projects from years ago.

I still have a long mental 'wishlist' of bikes I'd like
>decent BMX bike
>carbon road bike
>full suspension mtb
>hard tail
>more steel road bikes and 90's mtb's

n+1, my friend

Edinburgh has fairly decent bike infrastructure in parts, lots of commuters and hardcore roadies, and a decebt spread of LBS and cycle cafes. Lots of good road and MTB places outside the city too...and so far nobody has gotten on my ass for cycling around town.

The Scottish local governments seem to be turning their back on cycling targets recently though. Several paths and trails have been ripped up due to local opposition.

How lame are scooters?

I have a decent bike, but it takes up a lot of space in my small NYC apartment (Brooklyn specifically), even getting it out of my narrow door is annoying.

Also too, I can't bike to work in the middle of winter or summer comfortably. Buses and trains can get packed easily, so I think this cool scooter is the way to go, (though I know I'll have to wait till May to get this one specifically).

Have fun on that scooter in the middle of the winter. Studded 26x2 tires would have a tad more traction than those toilet paper rolls.

Just get a shitty folder and call it a day.
>>
>not enough room for a bike.
Fuck, do you live in a closet? If you have room on your wall, you could hang it there. If you're making the lack of space story up to justify yourself to "hardcore" bike dudes, then just get a used motor cycle.

So, my region may finally get a large, comprehensive public transportation system, provided some millage gets passed. But I'm wondering, are rapid transit bus lines bad? The plan is pretty much a plethora of bus lines, with one commuter rail line and a tiny streetcar line that they're not even building, just buying after it's no longer operating privately. I've heard some negative things about BRT, which they're building three lines for, and that they tend to become worse over time and just destroy any opportunity for rail. Does anybody live in a city that's experienced this? Or are these concerns unfounded?

No matter what mode of transit, the only thing that matters for daily transit riders is frequency and reliability of service. And no matter where in the world, bus transit is the integral part of all small-mid-sized cities. In Europe, cities large and small install bus-only lanes, signal priority, and subway-style fare collection to existing routes. Whereas in America this is called BRT, and politicians think it must be specially branded to differentiate it from the lowly bus, in Europe. it's called "the bus". So it's entirely a matter of perspective whether you think this plan is a cop-out or an entirely necessary upgrade to facilitate the mobility needs of some of the most transit-dependent people in the country.

>So it's entirely a matter of perspective whether you think this plan is a cop-out or an entirely necessary upgrade to facilitate the mobility needs of some of the most transit-dependent people in the country.

I mean, either way I like that there's going to be higher access to transportation. I'm in an area where taking public transportation for my commute would make it five times longer. I'm just curious whether it actually has any bad implications for longer-term public transport plans. But I suppose it doesn't matter as long as it's functional in itself.
>>
>>1018386
Every metro area ever that developed rapid transit first developed a base of high ridership through frequent surface networks. Buses just happened to match the efficiency and surpass the scalability of the streetcar in the late 20th century. The eventual replacement of Woodward/Gratiot/Michigan BRT with rail should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, based on whether ridership has actually built up to the point where running bigger LRT cars would save on operating cost.

Thinking of getting one of these. Only ever rode BMX and Mountain Bikes. I'll be cycling to work and school downhill all the way there and uphill all the way back

What am I in for?
Are brands as important or can I get the cheapest one I can get with no consequence other than replacing brakes, tyres and seat
>>
>>1016488
>What am I in for?
Depends on your fitness/strength/skill level. For me, I can handle most hills easily on a single speed. My college campus has some steep ones so I still bring my mountain bike more often than not. Around the rest of town, I do fine on the cruiser.

>>1016488
>Are brands as important or can I get the cheapest one I can get with no consequence other than replacing brakes, tyres and seat

Most will tell you no, but experience tells me yes since I got a $150 Walmart cruiser bike and it is great. Coaster brake hubs are not all made equal, but I have rode mine to hell and back with no maintenance and it still works fine. If you get a freewheel single speed you are probably in good shape. Most single speed/cantilever brake bikes are road bikes. There are also some SS mountain bikes with disc brakes, but most are expensive (except the $400 nashbar one).
