Thinking of getting one of these. Only ever rode BMX and Mountain Bikes. I'll be cycling to work and school downhill all the way there and uphill all the way back

What am I in for?
Are brands as important or can I get the cheapest one I can get with no consequence other than replacing brakes, tyres and seat
>>
>>1016488
>What am I in for?
Depends on your fitness/strength/skill level. For me, I can handle most hills easily on a single speed. My college campus has some steep ones so I still bring my mountain bike more often than not. Around the rest of town, I do fine on the cruiser.

>Are brands as important or can I get the cheapest one I can get with no consequence other than replacing brakes, tyres and seat

Most will tell you no, but experience tells me yes since I got a $150 Walmart cruiser bike and it is great. Coaster brake hubs are not all made equal, but I have rode mine to hell and back with no maintenance and it still works fine. If you get a freewheel single speed you are probably in good shape. Most single speed/cantilever brake bikes are road bikes. There are also some SS mountain bikes with disc brakes, but most are expensive (except the $400 nashbar one).

I've got some strength but I'm a bit chubby and tend to use my bike for ferrying my shopping around so tend not to go all out when cycling

Should I put the bike on free wheel rather than fixed o my flip flop hub then

>Image is the bike that my attention

I don't ride fixed. I ride a cruiser anyway. On a flat bar bike you should have a little bit more leverage. Not sure if I like how that bike routes the brake cable through holes in the frame.

Pictured is a British made single speed bike. Whilst it has a few additional features that would justify the price differene it doesn't seem to be of any better construction than the Chinese one here (>>1017562) at least to my untrained eye

just ride fixed it's more fun and if you ever want to ride track it will be an easier transition

does the anon with that KHS Flite 100 still lurk here? I wanna ask some questions about tire clearance.
>>

They're not any less durable than mountain bikes. On downhill trails I don't like a coaster brake for obvious reasons.

>>
>>1018781
Got photos? The fella I was thinking of has one of the newer KHS Flites with the bendy seat-tube. It is more fixie than track bike, so I imagine it can squeeze a 28 mm tire, but I want first hand testimony before I take the plunge.

I liked my unwrapped bars, they're actually made to be used without wrap, I have plug ends

Should I put the original road wheelset on with a fixed gear?
I'm thinking since I'm in Chicago area and hills aren't a thing I'd go for a 52-13 gearing

get something reasonable.

48 20 or something.

youll be some much faster since you can actually accelerate.

should I get a single speed for college?
>>
Are single speed less maintenance than teh gear ones?
>>
>>1023260
Not really, it's not like you have to rebuild your shifters and derailleurs on a regular basis, or at all. There's less parts that can fail though, so there's that.
>>
>>1023157

>>
>>1023268
I don't know what fixies are,. What is it that makes them fixies?
>>
>>1023271
you have no frewheel so you cant coast. If the wheel rotates, so do the pedals/cranks.

It's fun
>>
>>1023271
for crying out loud do you have google?
anyways, what makes them "fixed" is that the pedals are directly connected to the wheel, that means no free coasting. if thew wheel is moving then the pedals are too (they're fixed to the wheel)
>>
>>1023276
I Don't have google in my country sorry.

>>
>>1023281
you have complete control over your bike, if you ride brakeless (best way) you literally control 100% of the bike.
it's really hard to explain, just try it, if you'll like it you won't want to switch to anything else, if not then not

well front brake is p good for emergencies but you know it depends on your city. If you only ride in wide car lanes you're pretty good but if your city is tight like mine and people might jump right into the bikelane from behind parked cars any second its nice to have a front brake
>>
>>1023301

I can barely understand what you're trying to say, but from power level it goes:

Front hydraulic disc
Front rim brake (v, cantilever, caliper)
Rear hydraulic disc
Rear rim brake
Coaster brake (beach cruiser pedals)
Brakeless fixed gear (Fixie/Tark bike )
Ted Shred/ Fred Flintstone
>>
>>1023329
well, not saying fixies brake fast, but if you do it correctly it isn't as bad, just do an extreme whipskid and you'll be set. saved my ass all of the time

Brake by pedalling backwards. Prone to skidding and wearing out the tire and if they fail they fail completely and utterly
>>
>>1023513
Are they good on bikes or do they need constant maintenance? They are selling me a bike like that but I want to be able to rest my pedaling if want to stand on the pedals without it being a problem, what if I decide to put a proper break and take the coaster break, is that posible to convert it?

Complete novice to bikes in general here.
What's the point of having only one speed? Isn't that just inconvenient?
>>
>>1023537
What I can get it al really depends on your needs and likes.

Less gears mean less maintenance and less thinking you just ride.

People irl speak about speed and gears but they dont really know how it works, they just play a number game / 7speedshit or 21 speed shit. But is because they think as in car speeds. Gears on a bike are to ease your pedalling and getting the best out of your effort,. I've seen lots of cross gearing and high tension on the chain and that is a big no.

Single speed also means more exercise, on hills and such, if you have a bike to just a ride on a park, why would you nead more than ine gear?
It all comes to your needs and likes.

Coaster brake is the hub, and therefore incompatible with fixed gear. You need to replace it with a flip flop hub (and hopefully get actual brakes)
