How would /diy/ go about making a prosthetic leg?
Things I have access to:
- 3D Printer
- Styrofoam cutter
- There's a workshop nearby with a 6-axis CNC mill
My idea is to make the basic shape out of styrofoam and laminating carbon fiber on top of it. I'd use the 3D printer and mill to build the other tiny components.
I imagine the trickiest bit is getting the fit right for the part the stump slots in to so it doesn't rub wrong and leave blisters/irritation. Probably they do a plaster casting for that?
>>1223819
Plaster cast the stump.
Make a light weight attachment shell that various things can be attached to.
Have different attachments for different environmental conditions.

Hi Diyrs, hoping for some help with some ideias and id like to have some input from you guys.
I recently traveled to guiné bissau, a small country in west africa (very third worldish) its an ex portuguese colony and i went to visit.
And I ended up considering buying a bit of land there, build a house and whatnot.
Now bear in mind this plan is quite fresh in my mind and i would like to give a quick background on what i saw because even most portuguese arent too aware of GB and we were owned the colony.
- very poor county with only caju export and car imports looking like a way to make some cash.
- The country since its independence in 1974 hasnt have a goverment that ended its term, its either being ousted or civil war or even ended up slicing up the president.
- metal detectors at the airport work but you can walk past regardless meaning that even after they apply western rules they themselves ignore them.
- Its been called a narco state because nobody really runs the place and each time i tried to get an official answer on a few topics like legalization of a gun, piece of land, getting eletricity set up or whatever the answer is vague and clearly confused even with oficials.
So up until now its not very stable but much like sierre lione and liberia, life goes on in those places. And Land is cheap.
therefore i was thinking of buying up a piece of land (500 to 1500 euros a piece) and build a house that could house me, have some chickens and pigs and goats as they usually have and plant some mango and banana trees, caju and rice etc.
Now the few days i was there it really pissed down and the houses and hotel i was at, had water coming in.
It seamed usual for them and an hour later it was clean. Apparently the country has a very high water table so most rains will cause floods. Ill try to post some pics.
Me being an inovative guy, asked around and found out that the usual way for whites to build, is to ship in the construction materials to bissau and use local hands to build a house.
And this brings me to the question on how to build and what to build.
I thought about compressed earth bricks that i saw a youtuber doing in A Gambia, looked briliant and cheap but im unsure of the sturdiness due to water pressure. And this makes for a one floor building.
Locals also sell this block that looks sun dried but has two great big hollow parts that looks sorta flimsy. I'm unsure on how to test it for strenght and whatnot.
Regular european looking bricks make it quite expensive making for very small house due to finacial constraints.
Common sense would tell me to build what locals build because thats what works, but my problem is that most of the recent stuff is just western buildings that look like they are breaking up meaning they just imported without local knowledge.
All in all I'd like ideas, or comments, or a pdf document that might help me or youtube that might guide me.
anything from building in that enviroment, to crops, to fortifing myself in my caju infested palace for the next coup d'etat.
Worst comes to the worst this thread is a thought execise ....Or i get called an idiot.
Gracias
Get /pol/ to think they can start a micronation there, I think they've all forgotten about their last hilarious failure
Get some 6/10 brunette girl to make youtube videos where she repeats basic /pol/ talking points and then also talks about your plan to start a new micronation
Use the money they donate to build your own warlord compound with hired guards
When they realize you ripped them off, what are they gonna do- you've got the guns and guards
>>1222598
>The country
Being white is probably your biggest problem, when they decide to chimp out, you ded along with all your chickens. But that is entirely a different topic more suitable on pol.
>The house
Local materials and methods are probably the cheapest, however you should still make your own improvements, like raising the ground floor to above flood levels. Use concrete if unsure. Overbuild if unsure. Go taller if unsure.
Also without any government or authority issues you can build whatever the fuck zombie fortress house you want, which is a plus.
My rain barrel is filling up way too fast. It fills up after a single rain and I'm having a hard time using fast enough
When it fills it it just overflows and pours into the side of my house and I've been noticing a bit of moisture seeping into my basement. What would be the best way to diverge excess water away from my property?
>>1222582
stick a hose into near the top of the barrel, run the hose away from the house
>>1222582
Get a hose kit built to attack to a rain barrel, attach a hose, run the hose to your street when it rains and open the faucet
>>1222585
Good idea... I'll keep my eye out for one of those.
What is a better way to clean teeth? The fact is most people have imperfect oral health. But most toothbrushes on the market are so inneficcient
>bristles usually too hard
>not enough bristles
people will brush their teeth too hard and cause their gumline to recede (you should only use enough force to barely turn your gumline white)
and my problem is it takes forever to brush properly... 20 minutes at the most for me.
FUCKUFfgnfdvdnfbv help please.
(p.s. if you get enough calcium and vitamin d, you won't get cavities... i know many ppl have those, i don't. Also, brush more gently and not right after meals, b/c teeth are sensitive.)
Unrelated tips
>1
IF YOU EAT ENOUGH CALCIUM AND GET VITAMIN D, YOU WON'T GET CAVITIES
>2
IF YOU GET VITAMIN C, YOU'LL HAVE HEALTHY GUMS
>3
BRUSHING HARDER IS NOT BETTER - BRUSH GENTLY

>>1224175
Try an electric toothbrush.
Do not be tempted to attach toothbrush to your drill. It will not end well.
>>1224175
Put some salt on a rag, brush yo teef with salty rag. This is what OG prisoners do to maintain oral hygiene.
This is the ideal combination spanner/wrench.You may not like it,but this is what peak performance looks like.
>>1223207
yes every mechanic in the world uses those.
do you have a point or do I have to hunt you down and kill you?
pic related are just as god emperor you fucknut.
and 2 of these in SAE and 2 in metric make life wonderful, because you can crawl under a vehicle with 4fucking wrenches in each one.
>>1223207
i honestly dont like spanners, i find they're actually HARDER to get onto a nut i cant see
im just more comfortable sliding a thing forward than trying to lock it on from the top i guess
im guessing im alone and retarded in this; when i did damage control school, we had that style of wrench-spanner for turning bolts on skinner seals, and the instructor asked me with this confused look on his face why I used the wrench part and not the spanner part
So /diy/, I moved into a recently constructed home that was built to the most up to date codes there are.
Some of these are fine, some are a total pain in the ass. Mainly, the fuses are on such a hair trigger they'll trip with even the slightest spike in power consumption. It's becoming absolutely unbearable. I'm talking like 1200 W of simultaneous usage will trip this piece of shit.
I know absolutely nothing about electrical wiring so feel free to berate me if it makes you feel better but is there an easy way to solve this shit without replacing the entire fusebox? Can I just replace the individual fuse that consistently blows with an older model with higher tolerance, or better yet just fucking duct tape the particular fuse locked into the on position?
Get a ups or something
>>1222259
That won't stop it from constantly tripping. I'd rather not make a trip outside to reset the switch twice a day for the rest of the time I'm living here.
>>1222257
Well, there's your problem. You have breakers, not fuses.
Breakers have an amperage rating. In the USA that is generally 15 amps (1800 watts) although sometimes they use 20 amps. For 220 residential circuits, it can be much, much higher.
>Can I just replace the individual fuse that consistently blows
Very, very, very much no. If you have 15 amp rated wire in your walls and you but a larger breaker on it, it can start a fire. The breaker is there to keep things like your wires for getting overheated. Generally, though, your 1200 watt load should not be tripping your breakers. Have an electrician come by and take a look. Either there is a problem or you might be making an incorrect calculation on your load and it is greater than you think.
Is it worth shelling out extra for an authentic Mitutoyo?
Not really no.

I would.
>>1221703
>I would.
*wouldn't*
fucking auto correct
I've got a blocked cast iron soil pipe similar to the picture. I suspect the blockage is hand towels or baby wipes. I removed the toilet and tried rodding the pipe directly but after 5 meters I can't push the rods any further, which means the blockage is beyond the bends seen in the picture and somewhere further down the pipe. I've tried several bottles of 91% sulfuric acid but that hasn't cleared it either.
What are my options here? I'm thinking I could use a hacksaw to cut out a segment of the pipe outside and then rod it from there or blast it with water. After it is cleared I could then repair the pipe with a plastic join.
Any other ideas? Thanks for your help.
>>1221258
Is pic related what you are calling a rod? It can go around some bends.
That vertical pipe might have a removable plug at the top (should, anyway) that makes it easy to clear it.
And you should never flush anything except toilet tissue because it is designed to fall apart when wet. If you are flushing baby wipes it's amazing that you have not had problems all along.
If you do add a plastic section you should use the part that has a wye where you add the screw on plug so you can unscrew it next week after flushing 100 more baby wipes and hand towels.
>>1221258
The section you add should look like this. You buy a short piece that is threaded and a plug that screws in, and you don't have to get the hacksaw out next time.
>>1221261
The rods I've got are the same as this picture.
Unfortunately there are no access plugs, it's a 1930s cast iron pipe.
I didn't flush the baby wipes, I rented out my house for a while and the tenants blocked it.
I have a solar panel I want to mount atop a Tuff Shed. What's the trick to avoiding a leaky roof? pic related
>>1219665
I don't know for sure what materials to use yet, but ideally just some inexpensive 2x4s and screws -- something I can get easily for cheap, not necessarily pretty or high quality. The shed is already something we're considering demolishing in favor of a larger one, so I'm not _terribly_ concerned if something goes a little awry, but any advice for someone who's never done any sort of roof work before would be nice.

Been trying to print the base of pic related on a MP select mini but it keeps failing practically at the same spot.
I'd love to be able to check on it, except the print takes 15 hours and I print it at a "makerspace" of sorts which is far from my home.
The print just "stops" halfway through and the supports seem stringy. So frustrating. I should just buy my own device. Honestly.

Have you tried using a different slicer or, at the very least, did you try re slicing with different settings (i.e. infill, wall thickness)?
First thing I'd try is printing a tall cylinder/cone that runs the full height of the printer. Don't even bother with infill, just vase mode it to check your slicer can properly command your printer to go that high (I'm assuming you haven't printed anything this tall before).
I have been on a rather stupid bout of wanting to create a tarot card sized card deck or a really fancy book that both involve a lot of gold use. Wording in gold, gold edging, gold for parts of imagery, whatever. Problem is I have no knowledge on this type of work as it popped in my head suddenly, just an odd drive that I really want to make some extremely high quality gold things.
Does anyone know how to go about messing with gold like this or general tips on it?

pawn shops are only good if you want the lowest payment for simple melt weight. i have one that i loan my stuff out to a local pawn shop and buy it back with 10% interest.
etsy and such are okay for cheap bead jewelry. i see people post gold to letgo, offerup, and things like that but it's not likely they sell anything because not many people are willing to go out and spend $100+ on jewelry from randos.
you should look into crafting and repair.
all the jewelers i know also do repair work.
>>1224246
speaking of buying from randos, you should learn how to tell what's real and what's not. monet makes really good fakes, i've been fooled a few times.
I replaced a piece of roof decking, 4ft by 6ft but I forgot to leave the 1/8th in space on the long part.
I'm wondering if I should pry up the plywood and redo it or leave it as is. I would rather not have to remove it again - what's the worst that could happen?

???

Yes

Wood might swell and push up a bit. Bump in roof plus lifted shingles and water leak.
Why not just take skill saw, set depth to thickness of decking and cut along seam?

make your beds no wider than 4 feet. they can be as long as you want. this short width allows you to easily reach all the plants without stepping on the bed.
MULCH MULCH MULCH MULCH. if you think you have enough mulch, you dont. call local tree service companies and ask for tree mulch. Whatever you do, don't tell them to dump as much as they want. I have 1 acre under intensive cultivation covered entirely in woodchips 4" deep and more coming every week.
you dont actually need to make a raised bed. just deliminate a 4'wide swath for your garden with a minimum of 3' between each bed for standing/walking/kneeling. (ideally 4')
I don't water, and I don't have a problem with weeds. We just went three weeks with no rain, and full sun the entire time with temperatures averaging 95 degrees. I didnt water a single time and none of my plants showed any sign of major stress.
