A portion of the floor in my basement is very rough concrete that sits about 1/2"-1" above the smooth floor. I need to get the floor semi level in preparation for carpet. It seems like too much material to just grind down but I don't have any experience with grinding anything but some smooth concrete right outside of a door. Another option might be to use a grinder with a cutting blade and get it close to level. What do you guys think?
>>1227103
hand chisel and a hammer and go full retard on it if you wanna feel badass. Otherwise get/rent/buy a electric chipping hammer and break out the concrete.
Pour some leveling cement when done and enjoy your rug.
>>1227103
The best option I an think of would be to rent this biggest grinder you can find that also can attach to a vacuum so you dont dust the fuck out of your house and grind it all down within an hour.
You could rent a jackhammer, bust it out, and repour it but that is a lot more effort and you are covering it anyways
>>1227103
The smartest option is to think outside the box and just bring the rest of the floor up level with the bump. It increases the R value, makes the floor stronger, and increases the equity when it comes time to sell. You might have to trim the doors but that's not a deal breaker even if they have to be replaced. New doors really freshen up a living space.

I got my parents to give me their old wall rug, and I want to hang it.
Problem is my living room doesnt have drywall, just brick. This particular rug is about 300x200cm and has about 50 or so hangers sewn on one edge, it was meant to be hung with a ton of nails on drywall.
How do I attach it to brick without drilling 50 holes?
I was thinking getting a long wooden board, attaching that to the brick with 4 or so anchors, and then nailing the rug to the board.
I never drilled much into concrete, or brick. What bits, and bolts do I use?
What is the best method of hanging this rug?
>>1224690
>I was thinking getting a long wooden board, attaching that to the brick with 4 or so anchors, and then nailing the rug to the board.
That sounds like a very reasonable solution.
>I never drilled much into concrete, or brick. What bits, and bolts do I use?I'm sure there are hundreds of sites with sufficient information on that topic available with a simple web search.
>>1224694
Oh and, you could research with how many anchors you need to fix the board to the wall by checking the weight of the rug and searching for that.
Perhaps you could attach it to a wooden rod, and find a way to hang the rod itself?
I'm a pretty hands on guy (with computers and laptops), but recently I had aproblem with my tires. On one tire I kept having a slow leak and I finally fixed it by changing the "tpms kit" (the rubber and washer) of the valve stem. I bought the kit ($5) and I had to supervise this garage noob to replace the existing one. The garage owner was not pleased for him taking too long and tried to charge me $40 bucks for just changing the "tpms kit". Wow. I was pissed. So at least the leak has stopped on that tire, but all the other 3 tires are slowly leaking now? Is that even possible? Apparently. So I get this feeling I have to change the "tpms kit" for all the other tires to keep it balanced. Any ideas to fix/diagnose the problem? I want to get a bead breaker and pry bar and try to do it myself. So far I found this: https://www.amazon.com/PowerLift-Manual-Tire-Changer-8-18-1/dp/B000PTKONY/ref=sr_1_2?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1502218984&sr=1-2&keywords=tire+remover
and 2 of these: https://www.amazon.com/Ken-Tool-34645-Mount-Demount-Tire/dp/B000MIUJNI/ref=sr_1_10?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1502219435&sr=1-10&keywords=tire+iron.
Am I headed in the right direction? Any tips welcome. (Should I get one of those $900 tire mounter/dismounter and balancers on craigslist?) I don't want to scratch up my rims, yet I'm sick of getting bamboozled by these mechanics over easy shit, it's just that I don't have the equipment/tools to do so)
>>1224325
You are either insane or an over-eager troll.
Post pics of the tpms kit, or any evidence to prove that you are insane.
the clue, where you went too far, was the "to keep it balanced" phrase. Try again in a week or two with some other topic.

On a scale of 1-10, how difficult do you think it would be for a total woodworking noob to build a usable desk?
My current desk is a shit composite/particleboard from Amazon and can't accommodate my 3 monitor stand.
My GF is an architect and will design my schematics. I plan to use oak for the entire desk, sourced from Lowes or HD. I know it's expensive, but it's solid and usually already jointed/planed.
Am I going about this okay? I have all the tools I need.
>1-10
>usable
If it just needs to be usable its 1/10, but you sound like you want something pretty.
Make sure you have enough for screw ups. If something goes wrong, and that's likely you need to be prepared for that. Also there is nothing wrong in using pine, spruce or fir for your first project. I take a nice spruce over oak any day because I like the colour and the smell.
>>1219513
My concern with pine is how soft it is. I was checking out lumber and just my fingernail was enough to leave a significant scratch. Is there a coating I should be using after sanding, to avoid dents/scratches?
I'm not really after pretty. I prefer sturdy and functional. My monitor cluster is 100+ lbs so the desk needs to support that amount of weight, and more, without flexing too much.
>>1219492
what specifically are you asking?
the only advice I can think of, is if you use a coat of polyurethane, make sure to put a shot of black in it....it will really help to hide scratches
I just wrapped my mask in electrical tape. Is this safe to wear frequently or is this a bad idea?

I'm going to refrain myself from asking what cringy use the mask will be given and just say you're an idiot for thinking electrical tape can harm you in any way unless it's wrapped around your body and for uploading a 2.3MB picture so blurry that it wouldn't have mattered if you had downsized it to 10kB.

>>1214894
if you believe every word he says of course hes a genius.
he knows a lot of practical/repair stuff, hes a basic hobbyist machinist ( does quite a bit of silly shit on the lathe and mill ), stuff about prospecting, some basic electronics
he does have a lot of money and time to fuck around and do stuff that experienced folk would say 'what the hell would you do that for' and make it interesting
>>1214919
Like it or not he's pretty interesting and fun to watch.
Ok /DIY/, this is the situation;
I’m fed up with being poor and have decided to become that crackpot inventor down the road… In short, I potentially have a fair chunk of money to play with, if my business takes off.
So, I am doing what any true /DIY/er would do… a bunker. I’m going to buy a field somewhere discreet, and dig a fuck-off sized hole to make my own bunker. Now, I’m not an idiot so obviously I’m not going to touch shipping containers or school busses.
I have thought up a variety of different ways to build my underground cave of darkness.
If you have any other ideas, please feel free to share. I may steal them if they are awesome enough…
>Option 1 - Concrete culvert
Pros
Will last a lifetime
very strong
can get box culvert big enough for a small room
“plug & play” installation
Already have entrances and exits, ladders & access ports available to add on
Dat sweet Fallout vibe
Cons
Very heavy
Difficult to install yourself
can crack with movement of the earth
expensive
not very green
Needs a crane to install
Max 4m wide diameter
>Option 2 - HDPE Piping/Culvert
Pros
Light
Cheaper than concrete
easy to transport & move around site
can install by self
can modify with vibroblade cutter
watertight
flexible, will give with earth movement slightly
light enough to be lifted/moved by digger (excavator)
available in 14m lengths
Cons
Round cross-section means reduced space
would have to make custom racks/modules for each tube before installation
Condensation?
3.5m max diameter
>Option 3 - Concrete “Lego Blocks”
(FYI, the plural of LEGO is LEGO, not Legos)
Pros
Could cast on site
Easy to install
can make internal walls also
rooms as big as is possible, support pillars
individual blocks light enough to be lifted/moved by digger (excavator)
Cons
need to make a roof
hard to seal - expanding foam or concrete “glue”?
Environmental impact
Needs lots of concrete
Installation would take much, much longer
>>1202988
How about a metal container welded everywhere, surrounded by rebar, anchored to the ground, and given a 2 feet thick concrete shell? The inside would be sprayed with expanding foam then truck bed liner.
Sup /diy/, so I recently acquired my first kickstart motorcycle. After a few weeks of riding and fixing the kinks in the motor that made starting it hard, I found that the kickstarter peg had torn a hole through the sole of my boot down to the shank. Luckily I warrantied the boots, and after a few more months of riding I'm much better at kicking it and getting it to start 2nd/3rd kick. But even still I've noticed a bit of wear in the arch of my boot, and it may not be long till it's torn as well.
So, what can you think of to avoid this issue? I know a lot of more street-oriented kickstart bikes have a starter peg that has a tough rubber sleeve on it, that seems like it would solve my problem but they don't really make them for dirtbikes or dual sports.
Any suggestions? Pic related is the peg that's causing all the problems
grind down any sharp edges, wrap with tire tube rubber?
>>1229070
tried that already, the tube rubber is too soft and while it works for a little bit, the friction tears it pretty quickly and after maybe a week it was shredded beyond use.
Need heavier, denser rubber, ideally a sleeve that can rotate around the peg rather than staying in one position and receiving friction. just dont know what I'd do to make/retrofit one of those.
>>1229071
what about putting some heat shrink tube over it, and then sliding on a piece of pvc with rubber tire or tube glued on
48 hours after moving into my apartment I started a grease fire while frying chicken. I put it out with a plate and noticed the next day there was a big ass soot stain on the ceiling. I got some magic erasers and scrubbed the shit out of it which got rid of the soot but left weird residue. So far I've gotten a majority of it out with a sponge and rubbing alcohol. The wall looks like garbage still and the alcohol doesn't seem to be doing much anymore other than taking paint off as I scrub. I've tried Awesome cleaner which is dollar store stuff, baking powder, water, and Lysol spray but nothing else has worked. How should I clean this up?
I think I'm taking paint off more than anything
Honestly my next step might be to just repaint. The paint on the wall is pretty thin already, I see gray underneath
Close up on what I'm dealing with
I have a shower corner that has been causing a lot of problems for me. I have applied silicone between the tub and the walls for 3 times already now and after 1 year or less the silicone breaks from the shower side causing an issue where the water will start leaking though slowly.
I have used sanitary silicone for this every time and this time I bought this product: http://penosil.com/gb/silicone-and-acrylic-sealants/39-penosil-premium-sanitary-silicone-2123.html
They say that it's supposed to be elastic which is what I am looking for I imagine. But would anyone have more ideas on how to get this shit hold it self for a longer time? It's really annoying to clean it all up and then apply it again every year.
Weigh down tub with 80kg or so. Apply silicone, let it set. Or buy the shower tub strip.
>>1227563
make the layer thicker by injecting it deep into the gap
GE Silicone II for kitchen & bath works for at least 5 years for me and stays flexible
Make sure you clean the area well ( scrape everything off & use acetone before application )
>>1227565
Wont it rip it once i take off the 80 kg?
Just bought a house built in the mid 90s. The kitchen and all cabinets have a very yellow finish poly on the wood and trim. I can't tell what type of wood they are.
Am I better off just painting them or doing a strip and stain?
Here is a close up of the cabinets.
>>1227120
I'd get used to them. They look pretty good, and you're going to have a shitload of work with either plan, and they might not look any better.
Those look fine as is. What is the look you're trying to create?
Painting cabinets is a is a Time sink not only initially but upkeep through the years. It will just look like Perpetual shit
