Any ideas on making a resistance wheel out of junk or for nothing? I was given several bicycles in good condition, I can hack one up if needed. A bunch of wood and 2x4's. Old electric motors? Lots of stuff laying around. I'm a chronic "this could be useful" hoarder.

I've got zero dollars to my name, and I won't have any spending money for quite a few paychecks. 60$ for one off amazon is a lot of rice and beans which I need to eat instead. Somehow I'm still overweight.

I'm thinking maybe the old electric motors could be rigged up somehow, but I'm not sure how to build an interface to the axle or rear gear anyway. They're large fan motors with a notch on the axle.

Any ideas better than electric motor, or any ideas on how to actually hook it up?

Nah, weightloss. Got into audiobooks and realized I could be burning calories.

Two basic approaches are:
Friction
Magnetic resistance

I figure magnetic resistance is safer, quieter, and that's the way the real ones do it.

>>1173510
Around here that's just asking to get run down. I was given the bikes because my friend had enough close calls to quit biking to work. I don't even have a helmet.

Also, I fully intend to have my ass planted in front of a computer while I do it. Priorities.

Anyone know the best way to hang one of these things on a wall?

The ruler is 30cm/1ft long by the way.
16 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
An unsecure yet super easy thought that comes to mind is just make 2 dowels coming out of the wall near the ends of the thing so you can place it with the dowels between the teeth and lean the piece against the wall?
>>
>>1173296
agree
>>
>>1173085
i wouldn't hang it on the wall. for one, it's missing teeth; also, i think bones look real tacky in any sort of feature position outside a museum. if you can capture that aesthetic it might be worth the effort.

try resting it pointing straight upwards under a white overhead light at the end of a somewhat narrow hallway. you could place it on a shelf and use some adhesive gap at the top to keep it straightly vertical.

just thinking about it now i don't endorse that you hang your sawfish skeleton. Just lean it against your wall so it looks chill.

In general, is it safe to make a desk out of 1x2 furring? I'm making myself a desk but I want it to be solid. For context I built my own bedframe out of 2x4s, it works fine but it seems like overkill.

>>
It's your funeral bro. We all know of those tragic 1x2 desk accidents that happen every year.
>>
You could certainly design a desk to be as sturdy as you need it with 1x2, though it would be kind of stupid to design it around this material.
>>
>>1172986
It might feel a bit 'bouncy' when you put weight on it. Depends on how many you use really.

Sup /diy/, i have a quick question:

How in FUCK do i cut an enclosure to put such potentiometers (slider type)? I dont have a laser cutter or any other sophisticated means, just a drill and stuff like that.
34 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
Use a small drill bit to put a hole on either end of where the slot will be... use a dremel with cutting wheel or even a jewelers saw to cut out the slot... if it has to look pretty then go slow.. also consider clamping some kind of straightedged material above and below the slot edge to help guide the sawblade and keep it all straight.
>>
>>1172955
wont the cutting wheel break easily? were talking about aluminium here. its that easy to drill aluminium, but still, its a solid flat surface, not a piece of wire.

That happens as they dry out. If you're lucky it's as dry as its going to get and it'll stop, otherwise it'll keep running.

Hey. Looking for ideas on how to build a play room that won’t look too Obvious. (probably make it look like a weird workout room)

put a canvas on it. Also, why not go with the minimalist approach of you have to hide your shit, ie hooks on the ceiling for rope play
>>
>>1171936
If you are going to build one, 1) heavy duty hinges at the top, 2) quick release braces at the bottom, 3) folds up and goes under bed.
>>
Canvas, Can't believe i didn't think of it. awesome idea.
As for minimalist approach, that is the plan. But it makes everything feel so "fragile" ? probably just an impression, but, see what i mean ?

not begging just asking suggestions cos im rather stumped how to build this as im working with a broken hand. MUSTS: BE COLLAPSIBLE, HEIGHT ADJUSTABLE. basically just like the pic.

i have a few ideas im unable to sketch atm and and open to any ideas esespecially how to make it collapsible. thank you.

this is what im working with (as if you dont know what bamboo is) and what i managed to gather today and rough measurements. have plenty more bamboo to cut and use if needed.

i cant find any diagrams for a folding bamboo bed table so im kinda lost on this one. would screws be more effective for the bottom for integrity or twine bound then sealed with selac or whatever.

i kinda have an idea how to make it height adjustable (table top). any ideas or suggestions or offers would be grwst.

Build her one of these instead. I can't imagine OP's table without using heavy duty construction to withstand the weight and not give. You essentially have to make a giant U that won't flex.

This is beautiful art, but I've never worked with wood.

I know that there are more elaborate wood joining cuts but there are some pretty simple styles I've seen and the people doing it make it seem easy.

Why is it that this is not a more common style, and is it feasible to make most furniture in this way and sell at a majority consumer cost (not "high end $$$$$" furniture)

Isn't that isn't just a box joint?

If you mean those trick joints that got popular on youtube, they're not that strong and take a lot of time to make, compared to dove tails or box joints.
>>
>>1169324
Bridle joint.

Answer to op is that most furniture sold these days is ikea grade aluminum and particle board bolted together. Solid wood anything is a premium deal and sold for premium price.
>>
Thanks for answering guys, I don't really know anything about wood working.

I saw a video of some Japanese workers joining wood together, is it impractical to do that for a diy for a beginner? Maybe making a bed frame or a shelf? Nothing fancy like dove tails and all that.

The video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QPUPyuz_ink

I'm obviously very impressed by this but the more I talk about it the more I feel stupid.

>>
>>1163786
Assuming the radio only picks up AM, I'd probably disconnect or bypass the actual radio portion, then add an aux input so you could hook up a phone. If I were feeling really crafty, I'd rig up a Bluetooth audio receiver and rewire the knobs to be playback controls using an Arduino or something.

My friend's dog chewed the doorframe of their apartment bathroom as you can see. The hole is big enough to fit a golf ball or so inside.

Short of replacing the entire board, which I'm not really up to do, is there any way to fix this for them?

I mean that's way too big for putty/etc, right?

There is no right or wrong way, there is a spectrum of how long it will hold up but most will last longer than you need

Also, you fucked up the ISO date format which is YYYYMMDD, not DDMMYYYY or MMDDYYYY which is not even used anywhere

I'd like to make a very simple bike trailer for hauling small loads that are too big to fit well on a rack.

The thought is something like the pic, but ideally I want it to be compact enough to fit into a milk crate, which would be fine to attach to the rack.

Obviously that means using small wheels, with limited weight and limited space, but it would at least be an improvement.

Should have some small tires, scrap thin angle iron, and various wood....but not really sure of a good way to secure the wheels together. I might use like some 2x2s for the main triangle frame, securing them together with bolts for easy breakdown.

Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome.

It only needs 1 wheel. The shaft can telescope using 2 pipes of different diameters and a thick pin to lock it in place. Use angle iron to make a cross. Remaining upright is your job, when on the go. You can use a wide "Center Stand" style kickstand for the trailer when you want to park the bicycle.
>>
>>1173672
Hmm, seems there are tons of these styles, OP.

I've heard people talk about them having a tendency to tip over, hence why I was leaning towards (no pun intended) a two wheeled version.

The person who made this one, who did a terrific job and wrote a nice instructable for it, said he later went with two wheels instead because it was too unstable.
