What are some of the best display modules available for hobbyist consumption?

pic-related - 2.7'' monochrome 128x64 OLED module
>>
>>1161156
Nokia 5110 - Graphic LCD 84x48
Very cheap ~$3
>>
Take an old phone (something like a nokia 3310 lol) or even an old laptop (but you have to get a driver board)
>>
I never knew I needed this hobby
>>
0.96" OLED 128x64 driven by SSD1306

either single color (blue/yellow/white), or 16 lines one color, 48 lines other.

small, cheap, easy to use.

When bought from aliexpress, it's below $3 for the oled soldered to a board with all (un)necessary RLC.

https://m.banggood.com/1_44-Inch-LCD-Color-Screen-For-Arduino-TFT-SPI-Serial-Interface-Module-Least-Just-Four-IO-p-1124468.html

Not this exact module, but these with SPI bus are great.
>>
depends what youre using it for. if its for a watch or something then monochrome should be fine, but if its for something bigger, like some sort of camera, youd go for color. then theres the issue of size and such. id have to know what youd be using it for to give you a decent answer
>>1161246 has the right idea. go to a shop where they sell broken electronics, laptops are the easiest to test, and turn it on if theyll lend you the power cord. if the screen works then the rest of it doesnt matter. harddrives and such arent required, you just need to see the screen function. $5-10 will go pretty far

Anyone ever used an E ink display?
I always wanted to use one for a project
>>

OLED look the best - better than vfd's

That said they are pricy as hell. Good luck finding a 40x4 OLED or anything largish for a reasonable price.

A 16x2 is going to be $20-40

Some stuff would be fine with a decent LCD display but finding one with good viewing angles is difficult because China doesn't usually give you 100% honest specs.

I'd like to use cellphone displays since they are cheap and there are lots of them, but interfacing is a bitch.

Just wait for OLED prices to drop they will eventually.

Why's that?
Are other ones easier?

5110 is the only one I've used.
>>
>>1161156
Pi-TFT from Adafruit is a nice full-colour 2.7" touchscreen for Pi only. Also if you can figure out how to get the software/drivers to work please tell me.
>>
>>1161616
The Nokia you posted can be used over SPI, and I think some other way as well (not positive). But once you've honed up a few SPI devices, it's easy. Also, your world of accessories becomes much much larger :)

I really dig Winstar's OLED displays, the refresh rate is fast and viewing angles are perfect. Cool looking too.

Kys
>>
>>1161616

Well to even talk to say a Nexus 5 screen you need chip to do mipi dsi. Projects I have seen doing it end up with FPGAs in them.

I mean even a HDMI interface for dsi displays would open up a whole bunch of projects.
>>
>>1161895

When OLED displays hit the computer monitor market gamers are going to literally shit their pants at the refresh rates. Like we talking 100000hz... (If lg/wikipedia is the be believed)

Chinese Arduinos are cheap as fuck, why should I fuck around with the pure chip?
>>
>>1161951

OLEDs have been "on the horizon" for more than 10 years now, i don't know why they're not mainstream by now... At least they're somewhat common on smartphones.
>>
>>1162122
If it's for your own use, and you're capable of dealing with poor QC. No reason to go with Arduino branded arduino boards, other than supporting them. I buy a real board ever year or so, and think of it like a donation with free gift, more than a purchase.

>>

the board is decent, IDE is crap
>>
Can I use a gba screen for this?
>>
>>1162122

Well 'pure' chips are nice if you're making more than a one off - and even if you use Arduino aka atmega 328 (or similar) software and wiring and make your own PCB that's cool too!

Usually when you have more specific goals like low power, smaller package, certain stuff ( more spi, more i2c, more analog etc) Arduino doesn't fit the bill.

Other stuff is sometimes more 'fun'
>>
>>1162318

Depends what your doing. Hobbyist stuff usually yes.

>>1162432

Don't use the ide? Just use makefiles, or set it up to use a external editor and use the Arduino program to upload.

Not having a debugger really blows with Arduino

you are all wrong the best displays are ofcourse vdf. you can just take it practically free on some places. and you can even use it as a triode if you lost your last pn2222 hahahah

Vfd's are nice but OLED still looks better.

Old camcorders. I've got a few I've been meaning to tear down for their CRTs

I want a flexible E-ink display so I can make a pipboy-esk device with a screen that wraps half way around my forearm and is powered by body heat with peltier units

Anyone know where I can buy one?
>>
>>1163691
Only one company in Taiwan makes e-ink panels.

They won't sell to anybody buying less than several thousand dollars worth of panels.
>>
>>1163649
>micro CRT tubes
they even have litle flyback hig voltage converters jajajja they are super nice
>>
What happened to the transparent OLEDs?
There was a small one on the market years ago and now nothing.
>>
>>1163691
I think I saw one on adafruit yesterday when I was looking for lcd modules to play with

https://www.noritake-elec.com/products/vfd-display-module

Make really nice vfd's. Some that are drop in replacements for the HD44780.

Lots of other choices on digikey and mouser. Vfds are just expensive and oled will eventually replace them.

AZnyone seen a 'square' color lcd 1-2 inches anywhere for use in smartwatch?
>>
>>1161156
Could I use one of these screens to play an old school roguelike somehow?
>>
>>1170099

Sure. finding one that is 80x24 characters isn't going to be easy though.

Better off finding a suitable TFT LCD and making a font that will fit 80x24
>>
Anyone know of a good character LED display or a inexpensive alpha-numeric flip reel display (only 6-12 characters needed)?
Like to have each character a couple inches high.
>>
>>1173015

You want like a segment display?
>>
What are you using the display for, OP? I'm not an electronics guy (metalworking, mechanics, and woodworking for me) but I'm always looking for other things to do.
>>
>>1173650
Yes.
