Some pretty snails and moss might work fine.

I made one three months ago and It hasn't had much going on besides the plants wilting a bit and some fungus coming and going

any ideas for spicing it up?

Hi /diy/,

I want to turn a sneaker, like pic related, into a hidden camera. I need to incorporate a small pinhole camera into it and make it undetectable to the eye and touch of the foot.

Any advice or ideas?

I want to fully automate a greenhouse with electronics so that we have to go work on it as little as possible. Here's what I'm thinking:
-temperature control with a temperature sensor and exhaust fan and heater switched by relays
-humidity control with a hygrometer and humidifier on a relay
-watering either timer based or with moisture sensors in the pots. A solenoid valve opens or closes water flow, with splitters to each pot, so that all pots get the same amount of water
-nutrients with some sort of container with a mixing mechanism, perhaps a chemistry stir bar. Measure out nutrients from their bottles with strain gauges measuring weight, or flow sensors in the pipes. Open and close with solenoid valves

What else do I need to account for? Is there a better way to do any of this?

It's all going to be run off an arduino. I've got enough experience with the electrical side of it that I'm not worried, and I have a friend who'd be good with the mechanical aspects. But I don't really know a damn thing about gardening.

It's a small grow, <10 plants, all from the same seeds, in individual pots.

Won't work, or at least not how you want it to.

Most greenhouses aren't heated and they'll self control humidity pretty well.

Setting all that up sounds like it'll take far more effort in terms of setting up everything to a homoeostasis (remember your conditions will change based on the seasons) than just going around with a watering can a couple times a week and opening the window in the summer.

>It's a small grow, <10 plants, all from the same seeds, in individual pots.
so you chose to over complicate things?

gardening is not that hard
>>
>>1176791
I don't expect it to save time or effort in the long run. I think it'll be fun.

Would I be gardening at all if I wanted to do things the most efficient way possible? No, I'd go to the store and buy produce from people who grow tons at a time.

Is it dangerous if it is exposed to open air near where you sleep? I am in the upstairs of my house and it is in my closet into room that never got finished. If it is dangerous how do I fix it?

it will make your skin itchy and you will cough if you breath it. that's about it. then you go take a shower.

It's fiberglass, not asbestos.
>>
>>1176583
I lived around exposed fiberglass for my entire childhood and I'm fine. Fiberglass breaks across the fiber, not lengthwise like asbestos, so the particles stay big enough for your lungs to clear out.

So guys I'm trying to ease my way out of tent camping since I've been doing it since the first grade. I don't have enough money to buy a camper or cargo trailer unfortunately so I want to make my truck bed like a camper. I have a large bed since I drive a 2000 f250 so room in that area shouldn't be too bad. I do however have a tool box and a gooseneck hitch in the bed of my truck to work around. Any ideas besides buying a camper too? Pic unrelated

>get rid of the ifunny water mark
>place down a matress on the bed of the truck
> use tarp to cover when traveling
>use pipes to frame the tarp so you can use the matress with decent head space
>pack along your camping gear in the pick up
>use a bucket for the toilet and to save for later
>use a bug screen to screen away bugs
>for heating you should light a fire under the truck
>for cooling you should just climb into the truck and do some donuts.
>if you want tv with your camper experience then maybe you should have stayed home

I was wondering if /diy/ could help me. I want to do something to a wood framed structure that will cause some damage but kinda on a delay or take weeks to have a noticeable effect. Like a slow rotting of the wood or something like that. I don't want to make it fall, I just want to make local damage that will be expensive to fix. I though of letting lose some termites. Being the south, termites are a problem here and won't look like it was caused by a human.

Buying 33 acres of land to homestead on. The trees were harvested about 15 years ago and now have some decent growth. My current plan is as follows: Clear cut the whole thing to make room for planting crops and building a masonry home(using the abundant amounts of stone) and septic tank on the land and use the profits from clear cutting to pay back the loan faster.

Thoughts? Should I instead try to forester the land or orchard some trees like walnut? Near TN for the record.

Hi there,

I'm living in a densely populated area (direct visual connection to ~300 units in less than 50m distance), and I have an old linsksys wifi router lying around.
I would like to turn it into a broadcast device, which could act as some kind of "open captive portal web server" which would give access to local information, freely, without connection to internet. Difficult to trace, completely anonymous.

My first thoughts are to hook it to one of those small comps (arduino ? pi ?) turned into a captive portal/server. The whole thing would be consuming little power, and could be plugged anywhere, broadcasting on an explicit SSID.

Just a pirate broadcast web server. Not interested in viruses/scams/whatnot.

Isn't this already done ? Is there a name for that ? Do I have to start from scratch ?

>>
I have to add that it's not a router on which I can install DD-WRT... therefore, I would just want for the people wirelessly connecting to the router to be redirected to a specific IP/server connected to the router. Perhaps that makes for a simpler question ?
++ thanks
>>
>>1175904
you have to set the dhcp to give a dns server you run on the pi, that redirects all requests to the IP of the gadget.

Just google "captive portal" and design your website/server around that.
>>
>>1175913
That's quite to the point, and I can work with that.. thanks anon !

Working on building my own quad-copter.
Have any advice on solving or avoiding common

have the camera gimbal mimic the head movements

Ive come home to 1 or 2 of these flys in my kitchen every night.

Slow flying easy to kill.

We have had a shit ton of rain the last 2 weeks.

House is clean , cant find any dead mice , discarded food.

Any ideas on how to get rid of them?
Fly traps in back yard, fly tape inside?

Fly traps attract flies.
Fly tape inside is better.

Look around outside for something that may be attracting them to your yard.
>>
bug zapper far from the house as you reasonably can. The bugs will ignore your doors and windows and go there.

Get one of these.

So I want to try freeze drying things. I'm not a prepper or a taxidermist, really I just want to have an unlimited supply of astronaut ice cream.

Guides on the internet all point to freezing your food very cold using dry ice, then pumping the air out so the water all sublimates out. I'll figure out the vacuum canister, but I really don't want to have to buy dry ice every single time I do this. So here's my idea:

Get a big deep freezer, the kind you can fit a deer in. Get a mini-fridge. Disable the thermostat in the mini-fridge and replace the refrigerant with ethanol. (freon freezes at -45c or so) Put a vacuum canister inside the mini-fridge, put the mini-fridge inside the deep-freeze.

Would it work? I'm mainly worried about the mini-fridge's compressor's lubricant freezing, though I'm wondering what else I should be worried about. I've tried googling, but all I get is people asking whether they can store their fridge indoors.

Bracing for obligatory fridge-ception and yo dawg jokes.

Try it out and report your findings. Obvious i would worry anout how to power the mini fridge and how much heat it will produce inside the freezer.

If this doesn't work out just buy one of the freezers scientist use when holding samples

anyting tool handles are made of because they are designed to withstand shock. so ash or hickory.
>>
I suggest bamboo rods, which have a natural springiness which causes them to sting more when applied to the skin. Ask any Vietnam POW.
>>
Ash, Hickory. red oak can work for small training staffs/bokken.

to a lesser extent rattan, used by groups like the SCA,

I've been wanting to build a bed loft. I want to keep my work area under it, and having the bed on top.

I don't normally do DIY stuff, but it's something I really want to get into doing more. How difficult would something like this be to do? I could possibly have my brother help me, who has a lot of experience building houses and stuff like that.

It wouldn't be technically difficult; the trick would be making it look nice. If you just use framing lumber it's going to be ghetto as shit. Even your pic is quality boards which are expensive and require some level of craftsmanship.
>>
>>1178508
Probably gonna need a lot more tools than just a circular and drill, huh?
>>
>>1178511

You can do it with a miter saw, a drill, and a bunch of carriage bolts. It's just not going to look pretty.
