I got a hole in my ceiling.
This was caused by a leaky roof, which has been fixed temporarily (they put a tarp over it).
The problem is that my mom won't fix the roof properly for a few months, so she refuses to get the ceiling fixed for fear of the tarp getting weathered/damaged in which case water would again drip and just ruin the ceiling again.
So I'm wondering if there is some way I can temporarily seal the hole because we have all sorts of critters in the attic (mice, raccoons, etc.) and I don't want them getting in my room, I've already ran into a couple close encounters.

Staple up some wire mesh like window screen or hardware cloth. Or if you're also worried about losing heat/AC through the gaping hole, nail down some furring strips level with the edges of the hole, then nail down a scrap piece of plywood/particle board/chipboard/sheetrock over them. Don't nail through the nice parts of the ceiling.
>>
you can cut a piece of drywall and nail it in place. it's pretty cheap and easy.

you should really do something about those animals, though. they'll probably dig through your walls/ceiling and cause more problems. you also don't want them dying up there.
>>
>>1184833
the window screen animals could chew through
hardware cloth might be the ticket, what kind of stapler do I use?
I'm inclined to use that method because it's simpler and less chance of me fucking things up (i'm not much of a diy guy)
but out of curiousity, how would i nail a furring strip to the edge of the hole that's up against the wall there, there's not a lot of space for nailing.
Do I just nail the ends of the furring strips and not the length?
Also I would essentially be using 4 furring strips to create a square right? Wouldn't this mean I have to nail through nice parts of the ceiling just because of the shape of the hole?

>>1184834
well we don't have a lot of money. that's why it's going to be several months until we get the roof fixed, we don't have the money for it. There is an option to fix the roof in a way that we won't get big critters at least, but from my understanding it's too costly. Mind you the big critters don't live in the attic, they just like to pop in for the occasional visit.

And if I cut a piece of drywall would it have to match the shape of the hole exactly? How would that work

How many of you use these? Are they reliable? I'm a simple guy with simple needs, I just need not to be fried when changing wires for electrical maintenance

>>
I have a klein one that I got on sale at HD

I use only when I just need to know if the power is off to something that's not even dangerous.

Cheaper ones (they're all made in china) can't really determine the hot wire in a group.

You still need a multimeter though

Always test your batteries.

Oh I just need to make sure my outdoors balcony wiring is off when I work on it because its a long way away from my main switch. Of course the switch is always off when working with electricity but I dont want to get shocked by the residual static when Im 12 feet high on a ladder.

Over in /out/ we are figuring out how to keep moles out of our gardens.

I had this idea. I can build one easily enough, but I thought some ideas on the clicker mechanism from you guys would help. It had to be a loud/hard hitting clicker while being durable.

Pretty neat.

Yesterday, I made a narrow trenching tool (no pic). I can dig a 2 inch wide trench that can be as much as 4 feet deep. It is just a metal pipe that I squashed a tiny bit on one end then used a angle grinder to slice off about half of its width off up about 12 inches then sharpened. That end is the "shovel" head. Everything here is clay so it is fairly easy to use.

Whoa man! Quick! It's an emergency.

You have to wash your clothes. And there's no washing machine. You have minimal equipment, but you have soap and similar chemicals.
What would you do?

Hey guys, im at a loss here.
Our water was turned off by someone 4 days ago for reasons out of my control and I've been trying to find the water main to turn it back on but i can't find it ANYWHERE.

There's an old meter out on the street but it was covered in dirt so the guy couldn't have turned it off there.. (see attached).

Theres a couple pipes and levers attached to the front of the house but nothing happens when you mess with them.

Where else could you turn off someone's water from? he didn't go in the house or the garage.

The old meter is turned to the off position but it's impossible to move without potentially breaking it... plus it was buried in dirt.

You can turn it back on by paying the delinquent bill
>>
>>1183999
the meter in picture is turned off. if the city or municipality turned it off there would be lock in the hole on the shut off valve in picture.
>>
>>1184004
That is the intended purpose of the hole. IRL the hole gets filled by mud/dirt/corosion and putting a lock on it is a PITA.
Most residents are too stupid to know how to turn their water back on.
Turning it back on is illegal. Remember the valve is under pressure and has been sitting in the dirt for X number of years. It will take force to open it.

Sup /diy/

An alcoholic nazi neighbor of mine sold me pic related bike for 14 dollars. The entire rear gear assembly was fucked. I guess the previous owner got hit by a car or some shit cause even the "carrier" was bent and I had to pay to get it straightened out.

Now the area where the carrier was bent got completely fucked (pic below) due to metal fatigue and my fat bitch-ass going up and down curbs at high speeds.

My question is if it's possible/worth getting this welded back together. I use the bike for regular normalfag cycling, not mountain biking so it would not undergo that type of stress.

>>
>>1183902

Of course it's possible. the qusetion is if it's worth it, and that is something only you can answer.
Best would be if you already had the tools needed for welding, otherwise you will either have to rent them if you wanna do it yourself or have someone do it which will be even more expensive.

For sharpening my $30 stamped knife, should I get a 400/1000 wetstone? Or just use any old igneous rock?

What do you guys uses for shelves and tool storage?

Debating on plastic shelves and maybe metal shelves for heavier stuff. I think he may have some strips with hooks for some tools that he never used.

I use whatever I've been able to get for cheap. Second-hand plastic & metal shelves from thrift stores, yard sales. Old steel filing cabinets, milk crates, etc.

I've made some wooden shelves, following Mattias Wandel's design, and they're holding up well.

I have an entire wall covered in peg board and hooks. Its great to hang lawn tools up on. Or pretty much any tool with a handle.

im going to smog pump supercharge my predator 212cc for kicks and im curious on a few things, should i do a pressure box, blow through or draw through? pressure box and draw through are simple enough to fabricate, but i dont know how to reconfigure the carb to blow through. second i plan on putting on a gx390 carb for more fuel so is there any way to roughly calculate jet sizing for the larger carb with forced induction? finally how about how much boost do you think a stock 212 can take before undergoing unplanned rapid deconstruction? im thinking probably about 10 maybe even 15 psi if the pot metal they used that day was less garbage than normal.

Hey, /diy/ need a bit of help here. So my grandfather(mother's side) and my father were pretty good in fixing things and doing all kinds of DIY stuff(especially grandpa). My father is a fucking drunk bitch tho, and my mother got the divorce, along with an eviction(which haven't took place yet, as my father has been away the last 2 months and we haven't received the eviction card from the court). Thing is, when we got it, I'm gonna call him and tell him to get his things. I don't want him to take any tools, but I will be forced to let him take some of them.

In the last few years he broke/sold everything with a engine. Actually, the last working drill left, is hidden in my room(there were about 8 power drills/screwdrivers), but there are not any circular saws left(5/6 of them), the only chain saw we had is dead and even a lot of manual tools are unusable. I have a workshop and a garage, so that's a lot of space for setting up the tools.

I need your advice in:
1) Deciding what I can't let him take by any means(inb4 anything/kill him)
2) What would be a good way to split the tools between the workshop and garage
3) How to fix a chain saw and a brushcutter
4) How to clean/mantain electrics and manual tools
5) A good way to orginize screws(FUCKING LOTS OF IT)
6) What can I do with a few tons of steel, a great amount of electric engines and some other things I found my grandpa has been colecting for the last 40 years

More below, just dont want to make the first post too long

Grandpa was some kind of village guru that fixed everything people brought too him, and what he couldn't fix he just kept. That's why we had so many drills, saws and engines
