I haven't find a place to get good ball end hex drivers, but I didn't look that hard. Harbor Freight has cheap ball end hex drivers, and they've worked well enough.

Are hue hue hues worth it?

Any experience with them, or good alternatives?

I want to be able to pick a shade of white at least I like, normal soft white is too orange and "daylight" bulbs are an eerie blue that make everything look like some kind of horror movie

They look cool, work with almost any home auto setup, good quality.

They're also pointless, lazy, overpriced and not very good at super bright lighting.
>>
LIFX bulbs do everything they do but better (brighter, far better color representation, don't need a bridge, etc)
their integration with other platforms isnt as good though.
i believe they're the same price as hue bulbs now, too
>>
>>1182101
you can make your own wifi controllable lighting for a fraction of the price

I was half-looking for a new compressor on CL.

Found a guy selling a pair of non-working industrial units, $100/each (for the complete assembly including motor). Took my offer of $180 for the pair. Didn't really have a good idea of how big they were, just knew that they were outfitted with 10HP, 3-phase motors.

...what the fuck am I getting into? I've rebuilt a compressor pump before (the one I'm currently using), but you could nearly fit that entire thing into the low-pressure _bore_ of these pumps (which is 6.25", according to the plate). I guess they just don't build pressure anymore, according to the guy I got them from. What are the odds I'll be able to get away with a simple valve/gasket job, keep one for lulz, and sell the other one for a small profit? Or what would a scrap yard give me for probably a half-ton of compressor? Or even parting it out, maybe?

The original plan was to turn one motor into a rotary phase converter, run the motor/pump off of that for my own use (after replacing the motor pulley to get the pump running at its rated minimum 400RPM), and then flip the other pump back on CL. But I'm starting to second guess that idea simply because of the sheer size of these things. I needed to borrow a neighbor's shop crane to get them out of my truck, FFS. Never mind the issue of finding a tank that takes longer than 10 seconds to fill up.

For the record, yes, I have plenty of tools and the skills to use them. I just am hesitant about the logistics of manipulating several hundred pounds of cast iron, even if I like the idea of being 100% sure of never needing a larger compressor for home/small shop use.

use a gas engine. easiest and cheapest solution.
>>
>>1182103
Yeah but then how do you easily start/stop the compressor to keep up pressure in your tank?

Alright /diy/ I need your help. My TV screen took a shit so I decided I'd take a look under the hood to see if there are any blown capacitors (keep in my I've never done this before). All the capacitors appear to be fine but I've got these two yellow box things and one looks like it got melted or cooked or something. Could anyone be able to identify what they are? The one showing white definitely doesn't look right to me.

Extra information:
• It's a 32" LG 1080 LED
• The LED's have been getting cloudy spots the past few months
• The entire screen died in like 10 minutes while I was in the shower
• Power still works and I can turn the TV on and off

Could it be salvageable at all?

I can't find a better place for this so bear with me.

So me and my stepdad are trying to do something for mum...

Her fence fell over due to rot (the support beams were in cement, but under the ground. Go figure it's a shittily made subdivision)

We spent almost the whole day trying to remove the cement columns that go into the ground.

Can someone tell me how fucking stupid of an idea this is? A day's work and nothing to show for it.

Tell me to tell him to just sink new holes (unless there's a process I'm unaware of? Maybe a jack hammer?)

We put a 10 ft 4x4 as a lever with straps around the cement and screws into it as well.

Snapped the 4x4 and bruised my ass.
And this thing is dug a little over 2 ft out already.

just put your new posts and concrete right next to the old stuff. there's no reason to remove the concrete and then haul it away, you're looking at like what, 150 pounds per cubic foot of the stuff?

Has anybody here done camper repair? We have a pop up trailer with a roof leak. Over the course of a year, water got in and rotted away the roof panels. How hard would it be to take the rivets out for the fabric, pull the roof off, and somehow rebuild the structure of the roof? We spent about a week gluing plywood panels on to the old wood last summer, but the same thing
Happened again.
Also, can it be done in a week? It's noon on Tuesday here and we are hoping to leave on Friday or Saturday.

So i was tampering with my subwoofer on the bottom of my speaker thing (the one who controls the volume, not sure what to call it, not a native english speaker) and i accidentally ruptured it by putting a little bit of pressure on it (it is old)
I would like to know if this will impact the bass a lot and if so how do fix it without making it stiff?

Cut is +/- the size and width of pic related, not even visible because the surroundings (parts away from middle but not outside) are so wrinkled that it just overlays the cut.

Hey /diy/

Super new to brewing. Just bought pic related. Want to make some cider. The apple juice is as cheap as it comes. From concentrate, heat treated and aseptic packaged.

The yeast is a White Labs WLP 775 cider yeast. Also I have some yeast nutrient that the guy at the brew shop recommended.

My first question would be, should I add sugar or not?

Also, do I need a starter?

I want to make this as simple as possible.

Sorry for the possibly rotated pictures.

Did the brew shop guy recommend/sell the applejuice to you?

Do you want it sweet or tart?
Don't add cane sugar, add dextrose if you are going to add anything,
>>
Did the brewshop give you a recipe? if so follow it.

Starters are a good idea, but not always necessary.

sup lads

i recently hooked up with an italian girl and decided i wanted to learn a bit of her native tongue. ive been looking around at resources like duolingo, memrise and the bbc online language courses but ive heard mixed reviews about their usefulness. actually im pretty sure i read one review which insisted duolingo actively hamstrings your learning with its rigid translations and weird, unnatural phrases. ive fielded a few questions here on /diy/ before and gotten good results, so i figured id float it by you guys

whats a good place to learn another language, preferably for free? any omniglots here who could give me some advice?

i feel like duolingo is only good when your native language is of the same subgroup ( germanic languages) and such, something like japanese would be a nightmare if you're english

For years now, I've wanted to set-up a pirate radio station. I'm finally close to doing it, but I have a big question:

What (relatively) cheap FM transmitter should I get?

I'd like it to be somewhat easy to open, tear out resistors and solder in wires, but I'm not well-versed in electrical shit.

Any help would be appreciated, sorry if this si the wrong place to post. Don't use /diy/ at all.

I'm considering going from a 30 year old, worn out massive horizontal ac/heat package unit, to a mini split while I'm renovating the whole house. It's a 2 story house, and the upstairs will rarely be used, and only has 1 small duct/vent per room, so it seems sort of pointless to pay $3k-$5k to purchase and have a new unit installed, when half of the house won't be used anyway. I live in the southeast US, so fairly hot and humid summers, and the house is pretty well insulated. The first floor is pretty open concept, with open kitchen and living room, and a wide but very short hallway leading to a bathroom and bedroom. Would a single inside unit/air handler, centrally placed on the first floor be enough to cool the whole first floor (~900sq ft)? Each room is roughly 12'x12' to 14'x14'. Bedroom and bathroom doors will be open most of the time. I'd get a 2 zone setup so one can go upstairs for when it is occasionally used. Is one zone for each room really necessary? Or should I drop the extra $600 for a 3 zone and maybe have 2 units downstairs, maybe one for the living room and kitchen, and one on the other end of the house near the bedroom and bathroom doors, which are right next to one another?

Get Central air
>>
>>1180044
Why? So it can be less efficient, cost more to install and operate, and so I can pay to heat and cool every room when 90% of the time I'll only be using 2 of them?
>>
>>1180048
Get central air with zones.

Split unit doesn't solve the cooling rooms you don't use.

I bought a custom built home from the original owner. I want to make some structural modifications to the house. I am a licensed structural engineer, so this will not be an issue.

I would like determine the size and spacing of my roof joists (without cutting holes in the sheetrock). The owner was not able to provide me with any building plans for the house (he died). Is there typically a permitting department at the city or county level that would have a set of plans?

The home was built only a few years ago, so I am hoping that there is some record of the building permits or at least who the architect was. The problem is that there is no "building department" nor a "permitting department" in my county. Is there some other name that this department goes by?

I am located in burgerland
21 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I don't believe the structural plans for private dwellings are even provided to any government agency, generally only an external elevation is submitted.

If you're remodelling, then surely some exploratory holes aren't a huge deal. Your conveyancing attorney is probably the best person to start with.
>>
>>1184411
would a building permit include who designed the home?

>XYZ Architechts
>ABC Custom Homes

Then I could contact them, and then they can charge me $110 per drawing like the assholes that they are.
>>
If the home is relatively new then you can find the entire sale history through your local recorder of deeds or an equivalent online system. Try searching for "<name of your city/county> parcel lookup"

This will tell you who the original developer was, and perhaps they could help you.

One warning though- the plans aren't your house. Ideally they'll be identical but there is no guarantee, so you're probably better off putting holes in the wall anyway.
