Has anyone here learned Japanese for the sole purpose of playing Jap vidya? Where should I start if I want to do this?

I've thought about this, but so far I only have the basics figured out. Definitely learn the writing system first, hiraganas and katakanas, and as much kanji as possible. That way you'll be able to take advantage of written materials in the native format. This will already get you pretty far.
>>
>>3567342
I've been trying to for years but I'm terrible at languages let alone Asian languages. Honestly, I can barely speak English and that's the only language I really know.

Most jRPGs have a lot of honorifics, colloquialisms, and archaic forms that aren't taught in an average Japanese course and google translate often doesn't work for these either but it gets exponentially easier to understand the more you learn. I definitely recommend getting a head start by learning kana, grammar, and common verbs before even trying to play jRPGs.

If you have an R4, Japanese Coach for the DS is actually really good to start, but I also download and make flash cards in Anki. "How to" books seem useless because it's all travel Japanese you'll never see in a game. I mostly use websites only as reference and not for studying.

Learn hiragana and katakana, then go to tae kim and start learning.

From experience I have had an easy time emulating pre ps1 on pic related without any issues(except SNES on psp). No vertices sync issues, high rom compatibility, ease of use and set up, etc... Why is emulation so relatively great on these aging platforms? How is a psp and Wii able to do so much vs a computer with similar specs.

>a computer with similar specs.
A Pentium 3 or what? What issues do you have with emulating on that aside from age related stuff?
>>
>>3566434
No, an i7. Of course something as lowly as a pentium 3, or even lower, jesus retarded christ..

I have tried emulators on legacy machines from 2000s and they dont do as well as the emulation on the wii and psp. Also, computers have the modern era dont do as well either in alot of ways. Buggy, need infinite plug-ins, slow, lag, compatibility issues. It's not as simple as downloading an emulating and booting up a rom. There is always fuckery to emulation but somehow, all of that fucking around dosent exist on the wii. and I was wondering why

For SNES games? You must be doing something horribly wrong. Even for PS1 and some other newer systems you don't need much more than a BIOS.

Hmm a Giants player? I dunno, that's a difficult pill to swallow for me to support him, OP.

that fucking nigger couldn't tell you one thing abot kirby if you axed him, it's like when niggers put outlandish paint jobs for Tide detergent or skittles on the side of their niggermobiles, they don't give a shit abot what it means, they just want you to look at it b/c everything in nigger culture revolves around "look at me muhfugga" ooga booga lmao :D

In the early 90s I played a dungeons and dragons arcade game in the arcade and brought about twenty dollars in quarters. We got farther than we ever got. We got to this boss that is a giant dragon, that shoots out fire and killed us so easily. That was the end. Does anyone know what game that was, and how to kill that dragon? And how close were to the end?

Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara ... a really great 4-player brawler. Playable in arcades and also ported to Saturn, Playstation 3, Xbox 360. You can also MAME it.

The dragon sounds like it is either the last boss, or an alternate path for an optional side boss (about 1 stage off from the last boss). Hit the dragon on the head, there are many ways to cheese kill, like Large Burning Oils being my favorite to tear through almost anything. For the instant death breaths of fire ... you either had to dash to the opposite side or if it is the main fullscreen one, there are switches which activate stone barriers to hide behind for the duration of the attack (don't be so stupid to move out from the cover during the attack either and just stay put).
>>
>>3566156
>>3566146

Worth noting also is that if you can bait the dragon to use their breath attack 3 times in the battle, they can't use the breath attack anymore(D&D rules). This applies to any dragon in both games, btw.

In the first game (Tower of Doom) the red dragon is the result of taking the wrong path.

They give you two chances to back away from the fight with flamewing (the dragon
s name). The battle is basically "Empty your pockets of quarters because you fucked up" kind of thing. In solo play you are absolutely fucked because the boss needs teamwork to take it down (He only targets one character at time).

You are supposed to take the other road and fight the beholder boss instead.

It's worth playing the original SNES Chrono Trigger. You might like it better than one of the ports.

I'd also recommend Soul Blazer and the excellent SNES port of Super Smash TV.

Hi, /vr/.
I've been searching online to buy a Mega Man X PAL Cartridge but it's all fucking expensive. So I found this site and i think it's a reproduction... My question is, what is a reproduction game?
Link to the game here: http://www.retrogamereproductions.co.uk/product-page/a0602dc1-9b0d-3a2c-3190-bbe14e50ba10

>what is a reproduction game?
It's a game that uses a blank eeprom and a cut PCB to fit into a SNES (or whatever console the repro is for), but otherwise uses non-standard components.

It's the same game essentially.

MMX is expensive because of the high demand and the special chip inside, it was expensive to produce so there aren't too many copies.

Any good PC-88 games? Trying Dragon Slayer now.

I have some issues with sound crackling and drop-outs in M88, has anyone experienced those, and any idea if it can be fixed? Or do they exist on the original hardware as well?
My current options for best performance are 22k Hz, OPN mode, 100ms buffer, and all checkbox options except for LPF. No idea what most of them actually do, though.

The Scheme is a great metroidvania with soundtrack composed by Yuzo Koshiro. Zeliard is also a lot of fun but the dos version is arguably better (and is in english).

Learn the difference between V1 and V2 mode.
If your game has those colors it means you are playing a V1 game in V2 mode.
If you try to play a V2 game in V1 mode you will get an error message for most games.

Need help /vr/

How the fuck are you suppose to play this game? I have never played a raising sim before and finding it near impossible to play through this. I try to be logical when playing (praise him when he rarely follows my commands, scold him when he disobeys me or hurts the animals) but he just won't follow my command. When asking Pino to do things as simple as open a door he refuses and says he hates me. Any advice for peoole familar with this genre? The art and music are great and the world is charming so I really want to continue the game.

Wonder Project J thread I guess.

At first he is pretty stupid and can't figure out how to do more complicated things, so throwing balls and branding sticks is your best bet to raise his confidence.
Keep him away from things(put them in your inventory if possible) that he cannot do or haven't figured out yet how to do.
When his confidence is good you can try more brain demanding tasks, such as reading a simple book and using the bag of seeds. Also, there's no need to scold him when he's trying to figure things out(sniffing and spinning his head).
Don't forget to check Model 4600 or whatever is his number for tips after failing your main task.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. The game seems generally really interesting but I just can't get the hang of it. Unfortunately because of it's obscurity. Not only that but even then a guide would only really help with puzzles. Thanks anon.
