What do you guys think of the book? Is it worth getting? Also thread about other good retro related books.
From the excerpts I've read it is written poorly.

Not to mention he rates some games based on a non-playing experience, ~25 years ago.

You're supposed to waste your money on video games not this worthless garbage

Absolutely, I love all 4 SFC Goemon games, the N64 side-scroller and the 3 2D Goemon on the PS1, even that one with Digimon-like characters.
Ah yes the only game that satisfies my otaku fantasies
Of course.
Anyone watched the Goemon anime? There is a TV series and an OVA.
The OVA was weird as fuck.
Pic related. I was just watching my cousin play Super mario Bros on NES and it was cool, thein I tried TMNT and holy shit...
I fell in love with gaming at this moment.
>>3555740
For me it was SMB3 on the NES. I first saw it on that Wizard film, thought it looked cool but wasn't desperate to play it.
At the time I was a Spectrum and DOS gamer - blissfully unaware of how gaming ought to be. A new kid moved into the area and he got a NES with all the Marios and some others.
I couldn't believe how great this was. All the games I'd played on my systems were pretty lame by comparison: sloppy, anally difficult, bedroom coded EuroCrap. But I thought this was how gaming was.
Mario 3 was just mindblowing, not just for its content but for how fluid and amazingly tight the controls were. Like nothing I'd experienced on my keyboard + joystick hack-fests.
The SNES had not long come out and I was certain what I was gonna ask for for Christmas. Then I was showing him the glory of Mario World.
Then, for his birthday not long after Christmas, he got a SNES too, with SFII. Good times.

Ghosts n Goblins... on C64.
Kind of a shit game, but I couldn't get enough of it.
>>3555785
I'm a huge Sonic fag, mais I admit SMB3 is the greatest platformer of all time.
itt: games that don't deserve the hate
>>3553345
you mean the retro games ecelebs shit on because they are casual nitpicking faggots desperate for attention?
>>3553354
and everyone listens to them taking their opinions as facts because they are mindless retards?
>>3553359
And they need it because they literally don't know how to spend their time, instead of playing videogames?

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Threadly reminder to report this.
And don't bother arguing, it's a bot.
>>3553138
The last thread is barely at page 3. At least wait for it to hit page 8, you drooling nigger.
>>3553168
The last several times I did that, someone else made the thread instead. I had things to add to the OP, so I went ahead and made it early.
Otherwise, you're completely right.
what kirby games would you recommend if I liked kirby superstar for the snes? I played the nightmare in dreamland for the gba and I hated it
>>3571539
What did Superstar do better than Nightmare in Dreamland?
>>3571543
well, IMO the soundtrack was better(I'm not in nostalgia mode I've been playing both games since last saturday and I have the same opinion as 5 years ago) the graphics and the explosive vibe were better, the partner mechanic was really creative , I have the feeling that the attacks are more restricted in NiD
in what both games failed IMO:
having an edgy character as metaknight is retarded it doesn't blend in the kirby atmosphere , they should have made more antagonists like dynablade,Nova and Dedede
Anybody else play this?
Game is fuckn lit
>fly around caves in a little spaceship
>shoot mothafuckas
>get btfo by hugeass aliens
>go underwater and shit
>have to deal with gravity
>gotta pick up fuel every 30 seconds (which sucks)
Real talk tho this is a dank ass game
Anyone else played it?
Had it back in the day
It s great
>>3571063
This was the third Genesis game I ever got. It's like Solar Jetman on NES only better because of the combat.
Yes it's one of my favorites. I could never get past the water levels as a kid. Game had to wait me turn into an adult and even then it was a lot of blood and tears before finishing the game. Really cool mechanics. The fuel is not really a problem since by the time you manage to finish most of those levels you could find them with your eyes closed. Aliens designs on this are great too.
First commercial game I ever had, even though it was just a demo, it came in a very nice flat box with two 3,5" 2 disks
Very fun, gotta love the opening and music
Fucking love this game. One of my favorite DOS titles.
>>3571052
It's an epic game
I'm not huge into baseball buy the later MLB Power Pros games that made it over here were pretty fun.
Has there ever been a fanslation of the retro Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū games? Or anything along those lines?
I love the Mario Golf and Tennis RPGs, stuff like Survival Kids was fun. I couldn't really get into the Legend of the River King series mostly due to it just being a really clunky primitive game (I only tried the 2 GB games), but what are your favourite non combat based RPGs /vr/? I'm looking for something fun to play!
Non combat RPG general I guess?
For the Frog the Bell Tolls
>>3571087
Yep, Mario Tennis as well.
>>3570972
this game is full of combat though
Do you guys have advice for running old pc game on a new machines. I get weird problems like sounds not playing properly or certain animations stuttering, things that seem to be related to hardware that compatibility mode will never fix.
Is there a windows emulator or virtual machine you can recommend?
dfend our just get the game from gog. and i can whip that game like I own it.
DosBox for most things pre 2000, WinXP on VirtualBox for anything else. If it can't run on either of those it probably uses some black magic fuckery (I'm looking at you MW3) and can't be properly emulated anyway.
Install gentoo.
Srsly.
A lot of shit just works with wine.
What are some lost FPS and mods that were super popular back in the day but entirely passed over now?
I grew up with the HL1 modding community where mods like They Hunger were huge. I want to relive some of those games and discuss some of the best ones.
>>3570123
>mods
>>3570123
I wonder if Barney DOOM is still kicking around somewhere. That genuinely freaked me out when I played it.
USS Darkstar was decent
I grew up PSX>PS2/Xbox>PS3/360/PC
I've only played Nintendo stuff occasionally. My dad brought home a NES with a bunch of games he found at a yard sale, a little bit of Super Nintendo and N64 at friend's places but never really delve into Nintendo.
I now have a modded 3DS, a gamecube controller with a USB adapter and Dolphin runs great. What should I play and in what order to experience the best of Nintendo? Retro and modern. Also Nintendo-exclusive games/series would be appreciated. I'm looking at Chrono Trigger, Skies of Arcadia, etc. Thanks
>>3570029
In no order;
>Super Mario Bros.
>Super Mario World
>Chrono Trigger or EarthBound
>Pokemon Crystal (or Gold/Silver DS remakes)
>Zelda: Ocarina of Time (or 3DS remakes)
>Super Metroid
>Donkey Kong '94
>Tetris (GB or NES)
>Super Mario 64
>Smash Bros.Melee
>Super MarioGalaxy 2
Those are pretty much the most popular titles, the most accessible and it's what I'd recommend to get a bit of everything. Didn't include most of the party games like Mario Kart and Party as they're boring on your own, Smash is at least kind of fun.
If you want to dig a bit deeper none of the following are on the other anon's list and it's more or less assumed by people interested in the retro games era or Nintendo in general that they have some shared experience in these titles. These are also all fairly accessible, though you might have to unlearn modern FPS controls to enjoy N64 shooters
NES:
>Mario Bros. 3
>StarTropics
>Dr. Mario
SNES:
>Final Fantasy 6
>Soul Blazer/ Illusions of Gaia/ Terranigma
>Kirby Superstar
>Final Fantasy 3-5 (if you're interested in RPGs and want more)
N64:
>007:Goldeneye
>Perfect Dark
>Paper Mario
>Zelda:Majora's Mask
>>3570029
did you mod your 3ds yourself to use a gamecube adapter or did i missread that?
Name one sidescoller on the N64 that's better than Goemon's Great Adventure.
Just ONE.
I'm waiting.
Mischief Makers.
>>3569991
Goemon is a million times better than Shitschief Makers
>>3569986
Mischief Makers.
I enjoyed Goemon quite a bit as well, though.
Is the 8bitdo SFC30 better than the iBuffalo?
How bad is the input latency on a bluetooth controller vs. a wired one?
>>3569927
I own multiples of both and honestly, they're about the same.
Obviously ibuffalo is better if you dont care about wireless and are on a budget since you can get it for about 1/3 of the cost of the 8bitdo.
But I find i use sfc30 better when going down friends houses since the distance from couches varies and wireless is king.
Plus you dont have to worry about dumb people tripping over wires.
>>3569927
Almost forgot to answer your question about latency. As far as i've noticed, inperceptable.
And I do speed runs and play fighting games all the time and it hasn't been a problem.
Though theres always going to be that one guy who thinks he feels lag, but unless theres some crazy interference or your computer is shitting the bed, it just isn't there.
I've started to dive into Point 'n Click adventures. Rec me plz.
