Why are you not working on a high score right now?

I love Mario 3 but does anyone else think it's way too bright sometimes? In stages like this it just sears my retinas.

I always found the SMAS/SMA4 version to be more superior because it was better for the eyes to look at. I'm not saying that the original was bad, it was just a bit too bright. Take for example the grassland background. It's just one huge almost white spot on your screen. SMAS/SMA4 fixed that by making the game more colorful overall.

I think it's fine because I don't got little bitch eyes.

Never played the Final Fantasy series, but I understand the only worthwhile ones are mainly in /vr/ territory. I'm stretching that to the year 2000 just for the 9th game since it was on PS1, and anybody who objects to discussing the later games for comparison's sake is an asshat.

Questions:
1) I hear 4, 6, 7, and 9 are the ones worth playing. Sounds like 5 was just bland, and while 8 tried new things it too was kind of bland. I've heard the first three games more or less just hammer out mechanics used in the later ones. Which of these should I start with first? I was thinking of grabbing FFIX since it was the peak of the fantasy-heavy versions.
2) Are any of the "remastered" versions worth getting? Otherwise I'm just going to fire up the emulator.

Play the ones that look interesting to you, dumbass.
>>
>5 bland
not even, it has better combat than 4
4 is the most overrated FF but it's the best one start since it's pretty borderline to the rest of the series
5 is good though
>>
7, 8 and 9. are really good. set aside some time, not bland.

With the rise of emulation / flash carts and skyrocketing cartridge prices, has anybody sold their physical retro vidya collections and gone digital? Debating on going the emulation route, myself.
150 posts and 17 images submitted.
>>
I let go of collecting and I couldn't be happier.
I sold all my shit and went the flashcart route.

Just wasn't for me I guess. Too expensive. Too time consuming to find decent deals if you didn't wanna get butt fucked by ebay/reseller prices.
Now I just play the games I like and not worry about that bullshit anymore.

Were these games actually any good? What's the best in the series?

I have fond memories of playing a demo of this when I was 8 and flying into buildings but I don't know if it's worth revisiting

All of the PS1 and PS2 games in the series are good.
>>
1 and 2 are pretty garbage. Only 3 is technically /vr/, and only half of that is translated at this point, so it's slim pickings.

3 is a great game, better than all of its PS2 sequels, but until it's done you could play them instead, they're fine games.
>>
>>3568386
This is some shit taste here.

3 is the worst of the PS1 games, and it sure as fuck isn't better than the PS2 games. The flight model is atrocious. They tried to make it more realistic which was a detriment to the gameplay. It also doesn't help that the game doesn't detect diagonal input at all, so using the analog stick feels like shit.

I don't care about the two discs or branching plot. The game just sucks to play.

I was with my cousin when she brought a demo disc with the Resident Evil 2 trial in it. I remenber being astounded by it's graphics because it was the first game with pre-rendered backgrounds that I played. Back then, I couldn't comprehend why this game had so much better graphics than the rest cause I didn't know what were prerendered backgrounds so I though I was playing a 3D game with an ultra realistic look. Also, RE 2 presented diferent walking animations depending on your health so seen this for the first time was something new and fresh. To see a city destroyed completely by the zombies was really scary and Raccoon City felt so real. I find it funny that at the time Leon looked like Trunks to me.
>>
>>3568018
Me and a friend rented it on a whim and spent a night playing it. I remember it being fairly fun but we didn't ever rent it again. The only RE I played all the way through was IV which I thought was okay but nothing to write home about.

Zombies and the title screen freaked me out when I watched my cousin and older brother play it.

You don't have the right to call yourself a megaman fan, unless:
- You finished every official game (with possible aside from DOS ones) buster only
- You finished MM&B with both characters and got all CDs
- You finished 9 and 10 on superhero and with all characters as well as killed every boss in challenge mod

Then again, it's not like most of SoR2's soundtrack was exactly original:

Were old Shmups designed to rip you of your money completely?

The level of difficulty is completely of the rails, most of the time patterns are absolutely unavoidable and then game does some shitty trick like pull your ship too close to enemy to do anything, make enemy attack you in absolutely unpredictable and unavoidable way just fucking ram you for example or stuck up odds against you like throw dozens of enemies you cant even shoot because they on the sides of the screen much less avoid or just mix small barely visible projectiles in the swarm of large bright bullets flying at you.

Sometimes when you slalom trough every bullet in a frantic pattern it feels awesome but most of the time patterns go crazy to the point where it is impossible not to die.

Are shmups the definition of artificial difficulty?
Vid taken by fraps which accidentally slowed down the game enough for me to feel like Neo for a moment, I just speed up to more or less how it was in game.

Score resets after every continue, dont really matter anyway since I dumped 33 coins pressed select until I finished it.
1941 also took me something close to 30 coins, either I suck gargantual dick at shmups or they really are the spawn or hell-jew trying to rip you of every coin and then bargain for your soul.

>>3567964
Yeah I figured you could nuke the projectiles from screen with special attack, I guess too late.
Still, pic related is a more or less regular attack and you dont have enough bombs to cancel each and every one.

Are video game grading services the worst thing to happen to the hobby?

Pay $25 for some retard to take 15 seconds to judge an items condition and slab it in plastic to never be played again?
69 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>3567726
It's only a problem if you actively use them and regret it.

>someone else slabs a game
>WHY WOULD HE DO THAT, I WOULD ACTUALLY PLAY IT

>>
>>3567729
>I WOULD ACTUALLY PLAY IT

I'd rather they play it. Games are meant to be enjoyed.
>>
Probably something often used by newbies and investors since it gives them comfort that they have a good condition sealed game. I doubt that many real veteran collectors who are in to game collecting for reasons other than muh investment give a shit about VGA ratings. I do find it amusing to see people care about getting a 90 or whatever.

The real cancer is their prototype "authentication" service.

Will always have a soft spot for this game. It can be obtuse as hell sometimes, but it's just a fantastically creative world and makes you want to know more.

My Uncle got it with his Gateway PC and my cousin and I would literally spend hours playing it. Wouldn't end up actually beating it till I was an adult.

I have it on GOG. Never got about playing it. It's a cute french game. Supposedly lots of FMVs for a 3D platformer.

Well, the hardware isn't complete crap. If companies put a little more effort...
>>
Yes, it was just too expensive. Kind of like Dreamcast, it was actually off to a solid start but then the Playstation just beat it on every level kind of like that Playstation 2 did to the DC.
>>
>>3564049
The Dreamcast was dirt cheap when it came out.
