Hey guys, probably a stupid question. I am currently backpacking the U.K. and I noticed that the price to travel via rail (Virgin Trains, Cross Country Rails, ect...) is pretty ridiculously priced. Just wondering if anybody had any tips on how to get around cheaper? Cheers
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Megabus is dirt cheap, pretty well linked and not as shit as everyone says.
>>
It's a lot cheaper if you book in advance; as far in advance as possible.
Like the other guy said, Megabus is the way to go if you want to save, but again, you have to book that in advance.

Thinking about how mind-blowingly complex, comprehensive, and high-tech European rail networks are, I wouldn't call the high prices 'ridiculous' (I just wouldn't pay them)
>>
To do it cheaply, National Express or Megabus re your best options.

If you fit a rail card criteria (16 - 25, Senior Citizen, ect) you can get a discount, but it's still quite a bit.

i'm sure this has been asked a thousand times, but i've been contemplating trekking or cycling through europe this summer, however i'm a filthy balkaner that can barely afford to put away a three digit amount for this trip, despite all my zeal and effort, and i have no idea how these things work in regards to paperwork.

i'm bored, monotony is slowly eroding me from the inside, i'm in need of novel experiences, and if i spent another summer doing the usual normalfag rituals by day and moping over how vain and pointless it is by night, i'll feel really shitty.

i mostly prefer being alone, don't mind company though, i've got a burning hate towards tourist traps and "non-authentic" history, and i probably wouldn't mind sleeping in a tent or tarp-covered ditch if it meant seeing the world.

i've read the sticky, however i'm not sure if it really applies given my financial situation, plus i have no fucking idea where i should go, how i could get there, and how i could make some money along the way, preferrably returning with both kidneys, so i'm asking you guys.

much love, a piece of shit that's bored to death.

ok man, how old are you?
if you're older, this might be a bit harder, but not too hard. if you're young, the world is yours.

the description of your needs tells me you can easily come back with just as much as you began with.

For this, you're going to need to hitchhike. Stuff is cool, not as dangerous as media would like you to think. Especially since you're a guy.

there is one rule that will make your trip cheap and full of adventures: start actually believing you don't have any cash at all. Enter shop, think you have no cash, buy the cheapest stuff you can.
After a while you'll really forget you have anything in your pocket.
And trust me - the need of improvistaion really bring adventures to your life.

europe may be as expensive or as cheap as you want it. it's just a matter of attitude you bring.

early 20s, i'm not afraid of the big city that much, i'll probably pack a satchel full of non-perishables so i can avoid western food prices, which are ridiculous by our standards (i.e. a kg of watermelon is around 25 cents here)

also, since i haven't ridden it anywhere for a few weeks, i'm going to load it up with everything i would carry, and then do some 100ish kilometers of mixed urban and hilly terrain, so i can get back in shape.

frankly, i'm mostly concerned about legal matters, like visas, driving a bicycle over highways which i believe is illegal, etc.
i guess being from a non-EU country makes it harder, however i would appreciate any help regarding this because i'm determined and sort of lacking excitement right now.
>>
OP just keep in mind that everyone will assume things about you when they know where you're from but that's okay because they don't know any better and it's rare seeing someone from there backpacking anyway (eg if you're from serbia they'd think you're an ultra serb nationalist who is pro-genocide of croats and muslims)

Hey /trv/

Can we have a Goa thread?

Planning to spend 7 nights in Goa with my girlfriend. We certainly enjoy partying, eating out, good beaches, sightseeing. We will be going in September.

1) Any nightlife recommendations? I am aware it will be off-season but we want to go to at least one proper rave / psytrance party. From my research so far Hilltop will be open weekends and fits the bill. And it seems like at Baga Beach they party 365 days a week.

2) I'm thinking right now of spending 4 nights in North Goa, then 3 nights in South Goa and enjoy a slower pace and quieter beaches, sounds reasonable?

3) Any must sees? Hidden gems?

4) Is it easy to cop weed? Prescription pills in the pharmacies (valium etc)? What about stuff like acid or mdmda? Or is not that hardcore?

5) Any other general protips or stuff to expect appreciated.

Thanks

Why though? With a week you could see a lot more of India, and Goa is just an old seaside town, I don't even think the water is clean enough to swim in without getting Hep Z or something.

Did you ever book a trip and slowly after realized you want to travel somewhere else?

I'm going to Central America for two months and I wish I had booked a trip to Asia instead.

No because I plan ahead and I know what I'm in for.

I don't take into account scheduling changes though so sometimes I miss out on a few things when storms cause planes to be delayed or ferries to be cancelled.

Are you dying soon? Is there some reason you are not happy in your present and need to do the exact opposite of your vacation first? What's the real issue with you? Can you ill afford the time off? Do you have uncertain future upon your return?

Instead of moaning the utterly-nothing-wrong-with-central-america plan, why wouldn't you instead go ahead and realize you can go to Asia next time....will there be no next time? Money burning a hole in your pocket?

My gf and me are starting a 3 to 4 week camping trip through the baltic countries soon. I have some backcountry experience and ive done a year of travelling alone in New Zealand and 1 month of interrail through france and spain. We plan on just sleeping outdoors most of the time since freedom camping is legal in most places in the baltic area.
The thing is shes never done a trip like this and since ive been travelling alone and im a guy I dont know what she should pack for femaly hygiene n stuff. So if any femanons are here any tips would be highly appreciated :)
Also cool stuff to see in the baltic area people may not know of?
And people who have experience hitching rides there? We're packing a russian language guide just in case, but ive heard some people there talk german, is that correct?

Also Baltic thread I guess.

It would help to know your start and end points of itinerary, what are you interested in etc.

In LT, a nice region for hiking is Dzukija national park in the south of the country. It has many nice pine forests, small lakes, rivers, rural villages, couple of small comfy cities like Druskininkai or Merkine. If you in the area you should consider visiting Grutas park (Park where sculptures from Soviet era are now kept)

Moletai-Ignalina area in the northeastern part of the country is also suitable for hiking and camping. You can find many bigger lakes and forests in Labanoras area.

Medium sized industrial towns, and i think in the rest of baltics too, are not worth visiting.

Also, an attractive hiking option is baltic seaside along the coast.

>femaly hygiene n stuff

Idk, I guess the usual stuff she would take anywhere?

>We're packing a russian language guide just in case

Almost 100% of older people speak russian.
Good idea if you think "language guide" would help you communicate in the slightest.

Although in most cases you should not experience problems communicating in english Most people, especially younger ones, have at least basics of it. Of course, people in rural areas have less knowledge

>some people there talk german, is that correct?

Uhh, maybe german tourists in taking vacation in Memel region. If a person knows german, he has emigrated to germany by now for a better life.
>>

Latvian here
i dont know how camping will work out, but i guess u can hitchhike if u write the correct places name on the board, there r stuff to see, castles and nature. german will speak almost nobody maybe very very few old people or some lucky autist u come across, russian will e spoken by all old people and good portion of young people, but dont be surprised if some wont understand, especially outside of Riga, older people wont know english as good, but most younger people should know english, so if they r 30 and older russian, 29 and younger english, german u might as well forget but u can try

Long story-short, I know a 19yr old former female classmate who let's say isn't the brightest bulb in the room. Maybe that's an understatement but anyway, she held a party this May with 50 people some of who were the 'druggie/junkie' types and only two months later thinks that her UK passport is lost.

She's a Triple citizen (US, UK, and Irish). She still has two passports so basically says 'What's the bother?' with reporting the other one. Her main reason is to do with applying for another one, explaining to them she lost it since it was only issued in Feb and paying a large fee.

I'm sure that one of her junkie friends is making a shitload from her used identity specifically because she has 'neutral' features along with the obvious fact that its a British passport.

Now, she's an adult so I'm not going to pester her but just how bad can things get for her? I would laugh when she tries to cross into another country she has never previously entered only to find out she's committed a crime and barred.

because easing immigration restrictions between citizens of developed and liberal/progressive nations creates strong social and financial ties that make them more successful?

All the countries with strict citizenship laws (no multiple citizenships are iironically are the ones which are so shitty that no foreigners would bother being citizens of because the have no travel rights.

I'm travelling to Sofia on the 25th for an indeterminate amount of time (3-7 days), Has anyone ever been? I've heard Bulgaria is a shit hole and that the people aren't friendly. Hopefully that's bullshit. Does anyone have any experience with Sofia? Also on a side note, if anyone has any questions about travelling in The Netherlands and/or Wales, feel free to ask

Yeah, I went to Sofia for 3 days in January, so probably a bit different to Sofia in the summer. The people weren't noticeably unfriendly, although I didn't really interact with many locals, as you often don't when travelling.

The city itself isn't particularly beautiful unless you're into Soviet brutalist architecture (I am), but there's enough to do, and the bars and restaurants are good and cheap. Bulgarian wine is surprisingly nice too.

The Rila Monastery are surrounding mountains are really beautiful, so I'd recommend that even if you aren't into old religious buildings. I also thought the Museum of Socialist Art was absolutely fantastic (pic related - a giant statue of Lenin)

Hey, friend. My apologies for the late response.

I'm a city-dweller yet interested in nature, so I suppose I would like to see the major cities, parts of the coast, and national forests or parks. But then again, I don't know much about Alaska, aside the fact that it's twice the size of Texas, so you'll have to discourse of some neat things to do or see.

I do have some general questions, though:

-How's the weather like in the most inhabited regions?
-How's the cuisine?
-How are the demographics?
-Which kinds of animals are you likely to encounter there?
-Are people much into politics there?

I had plans of moving to London, I'm bored out of my mind in the city where I live and I wanted to go somewhere new.

Since Brexit is happening I'll have to choose another European city. Which european city is the best choice to move if I want have fun and meet new people ? Berlin ? Hamburg ? Brussels ?

>>
london is crazy expencive. That would be one of the last places i would move to. just after whole germany and france
>>

Portugal.

I'm just really bored, most of my close friends left for jobs abroad and I'm pretty much here living just for my job that's not even that unique (IT), I don't have a gf either so I'm pretty much free to do what I want.

So I just want to go to somewhere new, and hopefully a lively place. The reason I chose London was because I have some of my close friends there and they always tell me how much of a blast London is, how they always meet tons of people and there's always something to do. Besides the language is english. But with Brexit that's off the table.

I've did Erasmus in Germany so I know I like the culture and country but it's hard to make friends with germans. Some germans told me that if I ever want to move there, someone like me would be better off in Berlin or Hamburg.

This thread has probably been made a thousand times before already, but it still seems like a fun thing to discuss.

I haven't really visited any genuinely "bad" places (although this is probably because I haven't travelled outside of Europe yet). Lithuania was a bit of a challenge, as a lot of people didn't speak any languages besides Lithuanian. It was my first experience with real poverty, and people generally didn't seem to like being smiled at. Never felt unsafe though, and the Trakai Castle was a fun place to visit.

I'm planning on visiting the park guell and have a camp nou tour lined up. I will visit the beach and try some bars. But what else is there to do?

The Black Madonna. The scenery around that place is amazing.
La Sagrada Familia. Yes its popular with tourists, but for good reason. Pretty much all Gaudi stuff is worth a look and this is his work.
I don't remember seeing any coffee shops like Amsterdam.
>>
Just be warned, keep your shit close to you in touristy/crowded areas. Especially Las Ramblas (the main touristy market street that sells tacky crap). Pickpockets be everywhere.

In response to your actual question though... take a walk up to the big castle on the hill (dunno what it's called). Really nice way to kill half a day without spending any money (unless you go inside the castle bit, I dunno what it's like inside because I'm a cheap bastard)
>>
>>1273591
Not coffee shops in the Amsterdam sense, as far as I understand it there are legal 'cannabis clubs' which can grow a small amount for consumption of members. I have heard that you can join up for a fee (like 20 eur) but they aren't advertised like AMS. Best bet it to find a local who is a member (not sure how, I lucked out as my airBnB host was one).
Also, some locals would prefer to speak to you in English or Catalan rather than Castillian.
