Hey /trv/,
Wrapping up the last few days of a month-long trip in Mexico. Have had a fantastic time and am sure I'll return next summer, but Friday marks my departure away from Latin America and off to Africa.
My question is this:
I have a 10-hour connection between New York and Dar Es Salaam in Cairo. As an American, I should be able to easily obtain a visa-upon-arrival for $30.
Is it worth leaving the airport? Can I do much? Is getting out of the airport and into the city fairly painless? I'm planning to spend 10 days in Egypt at the end of September, so I'm not particularly pressured to get everything done all at once.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
cairo is a craphole my dude, would not recommend. not the worst place i've been to but i sure as shit would not go back.
t. been to cairo for a week

If you're not going to answer the question then please don't waste my time.
Bumping - my flight is tomorrow!
What other forums or websites do ya'll use besides /trv/ for travel info and banter?
I shitpost in the comment section of the youtube vloggers I follow
For travel banter: /trv/ only
For travel info: /trv/ for uncommon questions, Google search "[country name] + food/sights/things to do/activities/safety tips" for general inquiries
I google the fuck outta everything... Rough guide, youtube, wikitravel. Google images and lonely Planet. Then I street view walk up and down any towns in the country that appear interesting. . By then I have exhausted the location and no longer feel the need to travel there.. saved thousands on tickets.
Hypothetically, how does one with no money, connections, food, and housing go to Canada from California?
Hardmode: As an illegal immigrant
>>1275737
Easy, you don't. Get a job, save up, and work for it like the rest of the people
do you plan on staying in canada?
canada is even harder on illegals, there's already an official program to pay foreigners less than minimum wage

So as I've been looking at the prices of both hostels and hotels in Bangkok. And it seems like they are the same price. I mean for the price of a private room in a Hostel you can a room in a 2 1/2 to 3 star hotel for $10 cheaper.
>What is up with that?
>>1275707
well a room is the same price in a hostel as in a hotel. wtf do you want?
>>1275707
Yeah this is pretty normal. Hostels are only cheaper if you stay in dorms. The only good aspect of getting a private room in a hostel is that they allow you to mingle with other backpackers as where most hostels have an isolating "more private" environment. Look into the other benefits those places offer, like breakfast or pool access. Usually hostels don't have great amenities but might have some cool incentives like pub crawls or game nights for their patrons if you're into that.

easy friend, it's just a question
Lads, can you give me the quick rundown on frequent flyer cards? What's the best card? Which airline runs the best program?
>>1275546
The quick rundown is:
>Miles&More > OneWorld > SkyTeam > anything else
>they're all equally shit until you get into the elite levels where it becomes rewarding and easy to keep
>if you just make it into the first level (silver) don't even bother, it's not worth it
>points awarded = money spent + bonus points for flying business/first
>getting the associated credit card is a must
>converting anything to miles is a scam
>>1275551
You probably meant StarAlliance instead of Miles'n'More. But yea, more or less this.
Of course a big factor is simply which airlines fly the most from your location.
>>1275546
Aye, but which card ahould I choose? And why is it Chase Sapphire?
I take two trips each year and fly a totsl of about 5,000 miles annually..
I'm going with my two friends to Africa for a month and a half. So far we are planing on Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameron, DRC, Kenya, Ethiopia in that order.
Sorta nervous. We'll stick together but we are three women and we aren't doing touristy stuff we're mostly hanging in cities. I've heard it's easy to be swindled and stuff like that and in some cases worse. Any advice for the countries listed above?
Scams are easy to avoid if you stick together. That way you've got three brains working to figure out what the angle is, and to pull one person away from the situation if he/she gets sucked in.
Most common scam I've encountered is "Here's a gift [shitty jewelry], please take it, I won't take no for an answer. Now, you have some present from America for me? No, not that, give me a present of ten dollars."
Are you flying to each of these cities? If not can you talk more about the logistics of your trip? Also, why did you chose those countries?
>>1275374
We're driving to most we only take a flight to get to Kinshasa. And we choose them for the social scene and getting to know the locals in the capitals.
PRO TIP: Don't go especially if you're white

Anyone have suggestions for this spot?
I'm going in September. I'm looking into bio bays, rainforest hikes in el yunque, old San Juan, and beaches.
The main issues for me is that it's gonna be a waxing moon, so I don't know how worth it the bio bays will be. Also unsure about logistics. Can I bus around to the rainforest and bio bays? Do I need a car? Some places like vieques apparently you take a ferry but then you have to spend the night there if you do a bio bays because the ferry doesn't run middle of the night..
>>1274212
Ive heard that the biobays are pretty much dead at this point from pollution, but Ive never been so idk.
Depending on your budget there are a good amount of awesome rainforest tours - check out Acampa especially. If not, I imagine El Yunque is bus-able.
>>1274384
Thanks, will check out acampa! I saw a bunch of guided tours through rainforests but thought they were a scam. Got any recommendations based on experience for which one was good?
just realized acampa IS the tour company >.>
Thanks! I think I'm gonna book the Toro Negro tour.
I'm moving to new mexico for a few months, what is there to see outside of Albuquerque and Santa Fe?
What part are you moving to?
Its a huge state.

I am not quite sure if you are a fan of "Better call Saul" but the shooting for the 4th and final season will start in september in the albuquerque area. Stand ins and spectators are welcome.

Im traveling to Greece & Spain. I recently found this company called Know Roaming that offers free whatsapp without data or wifi. Anyone know of anything similar or any good plans in Europe?
no one?
>>1273693
No idea never heard of it. Where are you from?
If i was you I'd just buy a local sim and it usually works out cheap and you will get data and minutes, texts for like $5.
global roaming has been destroyed within the EU and UK. get whoever the fuck you want and take them everywhere.

Do you think it is enjoyable travelling by yourself if you're an introverted?
I read all this stuff about hanging out in the hostel, meeting people and so on. But I honestly don't like doing that. I mean I'm pretty normie after all, I just get bored in those situations and I'd rather keep it to myself.
If I ever do it I most probably will book a single room in a hotel, even if it's more expensive.
Stupid idea?
>>1271335
Yes. I love traveling by myself. I have for many years.
No. You may get a different opinion about this from a Real Traveler®. We are not going on your vacation or your trip. I will not be putting on your shoes or your boots or getting on your plane in your place. I would say that only you can figure this out and the only way to figure this out is to probably plan a trip that includes time in a hostel and time in a hotel to see for yourself.
>>1271335
I get very anxious and annoyed when i travel alone, this might be different for you. Wherever you go, it's always nice to ineract with the locals, or with fellow travelers, hostels are a great starting point for this.
I had to travel alone for my company a few times, and there is nothing i hate more than being alone in a hotel room abroad, but again, you might have different experience. Just go on a short solo trip, can be even somewhere nearby.
>>1271335
>Do you think it is enjoyable travelling by yourself if you're an introverted?
This doesn't make sense. Being introvert means that that's precisely the way you would like to travel.
What has been your worst/best experience with an airport or airline?
Which airlines would you recommend or avoid like the plague?
Dude
Once I was on a direct flight to the Amsterdam,I got upgraded to first class, and one of the flight attendants was like, super nice, and hot. I was able to get her number and now she's my gf. the food was great and I felt so relaxed. I didn't get jet lag. The flight back however was terrible. I barely got any sleep and I used my Brazilian passport, so all the flight attendants tried talking to me in indecipherable Portuguese.
>Air Canada
>Vancouver to Toronto flight (~4 hours), scheduled for 9 a.m.
>postponed to 12
>ok, grab a beer and wait
>postponed to 2 p.m.
>ok, grab one more beer
>postponed to 7 fucking p.m.
>had to wait 1 hour in line to get to the AC counter
>"That's not our fault. Here's a 10 CAD voucher for airport shops."
>Fuck you all, cheapest food was 12 CAD
>Got on the plane at 7 p.m.
>small beer is 5$
>stranded in Toronto at 2 a.m.
>no refund for booked hotel
>no hotel room
>had to wait ~4 hours for the bus, in the middle of the night
>additionally i lost my headphones on the plane and lost & found didn't find them
tl;dr I lost 2 full days and was stressed as fuck
>>1270312
I got really high several hours before departing for the airport and ate a bunch of chinese food from a buffet. I had a window seat, used the bathroom at the beginning of the flight, passed out for 8 hours, and woke up in Europe.
What's it like living in NYC? If you're only middle class is it even worth it?
I visualize living near Central Park and being able to jog there every day. Would I have to be a millionaire to get anywhere near this? Does it get boring?
It feels like a central piece of the world and I'd like to be there. Almost comparable to something like Tokyo except in burgerland
>>1251966
I haven't lived there, but I'm about to move there and I've done some research.
Living in Manhattan (Central Park's borough) takes some serious cash--at least middle or lower Manhattan, that is. I'm moving to start graduate studies so with my tight budget I'm going to Queens. Depending on your income, Manhattan can be very hard to pull off.
>Does it get boring?
Unless you've got crippling social anxiety, your problem in NYC will be distractibility, not getting bored.
>>1251969
>Unless you've got crippling social anxiety
Oh... I guess that's a problem then...
>>1251970
I'm not trying to make light of your anxiety, but what did you think being in a massive city would be like?

Go to south korea, rent an apartment, do nothing but sit in it and stare at the cieling.
But seriously how is anyone suppose to help you with a OP like that
>>1275179
What inspired you to make this thread? What replies are you hoping for? Do you want /trv/ to plan a holiday for you? Is this what you're implying ?
>>1275183
OP wanted someone to tell him what to do. In which he would probably never do it, and even if he did he's just probably mope around his hotel room all day
