Hey guys, probably a stupid question. I am currently backpacking the U.K. and I noticed that the price to travel via rail (Virgin Trains, Cross Country Rails, ect...) is pretty ridiculously priced. Just wondering if anybody had any tips on how to get around cheaper? Cheers
Megabus is dirt cheap, pretty well linked and not as shit as everyone says.
It's a lot cheaper if you book in advance; as far in advance as possible.
Like the other guy said, Megabus is the way to go if you want to save, but again, you have to book that in advance.
Thinking about how mind-blowingly complex, comprehensive, and high-tech European rail networks are, I wouldn't call the high prices 'ridiculous' (I just wouldn't pay them)
To do it cheaply, National Express or Megabus re your best options.
If you fit a rail card criteria (16 - 25, Senior Citizen, ect) you can get a discount, but it's still quite a bit.
The website trainline is good for finding cheap train tickets.
For coach travel, you can also use National Express (though Megabus is usually cheaper).

depends how far you're going but you can get some flights cheaper than trains

You'll notice that when you want to travel about 60 miles, a one-way ticket is about £50 and a return is £51
Plus the trains are filthy, often late and filled with a hideous mixture of subhuman scum and angry white collar workers.
Sometimes private taxi firms are cheaper to get to airports or nearby cities than the train. Also you can ask them to drop you near hostels or wherever.

Brit here,
Hop trains at night, seriously. After 8pm no one gives a shit, I cross country from London to the Midlands for free, boarding at 9pm.
For local trains , majority don't have ticket dudes but some stations have their ticket barriers up.

Coaches are probably your best bet (National Express). Long as fuck - took me 9 hours to get from Cornwall to Cardiff this summer. But literally 2x or 3x cheaper.
