australian here, worked it into my american road trip next month along with a rocket launch in california.
will be in oregon on the 21st, where should i watch the eclipse from?, and will local accommodation be booked out early? (was planning on just finding a motel that night).

Driving from Los Angeles to Idaho. Staying at some really rad airbnbs. I'm super excited.

My cousin has a cabin that's basically dead center under the path of totality. Sadly I can't make it, as it's like two days after I get back from Japan.

welder's goggles should be sufficient to look directly at it and filter it for pictures on my phone?

NASA says #14 welder's glass should be safe. If you don't already have that, you can get fairly inexpensive aluminized mylar glasses designed specifically for viewing the sun.
