Yeah, I went to Sofia for 3 days in January, so probably a bit different to Sofia in the summer. The people weren't noticeably unfriendly, although I didn't really interact with many locals, as you often don't when travelling.

The city itself isn't particularly beautiful unless you're into Soviet brutalist architecture (I am), but there's enough to do, and the bars and restaurants are good and cheap. Bulgarian wine is surprisingly nice too.

The Rila Monastery are surrounding mountains are really beautiful, so I'd recommend that even if you aren't into old religious buildings. I also thought the Museum of Socialist Art was absolutely fantastic (pic related - a giant statue of Lenin)

Nah, Sofia is great! Met some great Bulgarians there, even got with this Bulgarian chick ;)

Check out bar Petuk/Petak. They play some good dnb sometimes. Stay at Hostel Mostel. Do the Free Sofia Tour. Try the boza drink. Wander around the streets. Find a local on couchsurfing or tinder to hang with. Rila Monastery as another anon mentioned is worth it.

I've found some sites in Ukraine but the costs are pretty fucking crazy and clearly catering to stag dos, and let you fire 10 rounds.

For a couple of bucks? Literally nowhere licensed in the world, unless you convince some Albanian sheep herder to lend you his AK, but again, bullets cost money. 150 bullets + gun rental + instructor cost me $60 in Bulgaria.

Here most accessible are pistols and shotguns. Quite cheap, too. No full auto of any kind, sadly. Rifles for some reason drive up the cost immensely.

Yeah, you must've seen the "military tour" stuff. I found some Ukranian stuff like http://sapsan.ua/price/, afaik I shot with the AK-tier guns is 40 ukranian meme money = $1.54, could probably get it down further with some research into different places, but website doesn't have an English translation, so makes me think this is a regular price.

Looking at these they aren't very good as well. For the actual AK stuff a bit in advance and with help from a local (I can do it for you).

Yeah, this is an Arsenal made rifle. It's a good, licensed version but it's marketed as a hunting rifle, so it's meant to be fired prone and that's why it has this meme stock. Yah, it's uncomfortable, the girl at the shooting exercise got to hold the only rifle with sensible stock.

It can be a bit of a shit hole, though that's mostly just the case with small backwater towns and rural areas. Sofia itself is perfectly fine. People are friendly in general. The police though most certainly isn't, they're corrupt as fuck and likely to cause problems in hope of getting a bribe. Maybe it's changed over the years since I've been there, but you were definitely better off avoiding them like the plague.
