> medieval setting
> instantaneous communication possible through magic
> fast travel possible through magic gates
> horses basically hay powered cars
> dwarves bust out steam powered gear shit
> infinite rations/magic remove all supply problems
> total racial/gender equality
> fully automatic crossbows are a thing

Why would you even bother to make the setting medieval at this point?

SPESS MEHREENS! TODAY, THE CUSTOMERS ARE AT OUR DOORS! WE KNOW OUR BURGERS, AND WE WILL COOK THEM! WE FRY FOR OUR HONAH AS BLUD REVENS, AS SPESS MEHREENS, AND WE FRY IN THE NAME OF THE EMPRAH!

IF WE FEHL AN ORDAH, WE WILL MAKE IT AGAIN AND GIVE A DISCOUNT! BUT WE WILL NOT FEHL, NO, IT IS THE CUSTOMER WHO WILL TASTE OUR DELICIOUS GRILLED MEAT.

AS YOU KNOW, MOST OF OUR BATTLE BURGERS ARE STORED IN SPESS, PREPARED TO DEEP FRY! OUR LARDERS HAVE BEEN PREPARED SHOULD THE CUSTOMERS BE SO BOLD AND FOOLISH TO COME BACK FOR SECONDS! WE HAVE PLACED MULTIPLE FRYCOOKS ALLOWING FOR MULTIPLE, SIMMULTANEUS DEVAHSTATING DEEP FRIES.

THE CODEX CLOGGEDARTERIES NEMES THIS MANUVAH HEART PAIN! WE WILL DESCEND UPON THE BURGAHS, WE WILL OVERWHELM THEM, WE WILL LEAVE NONE UNFRIED! MEANWHILE, OUR CASHIERS WILL ENSURE THE DEFENSE OF OUR HEADQUARTERS!

WE ARE THE SPESS MEHREENS! WE ARE THE EMPRAH'S FRYCOOKS!

Does anybody here know anything about pauper edh? My shop is running a one-off event and I was hoping someone can give me a hand.

My suggestion. Puresteel Paladin deck. Gets so much value and draw power off dropping equipment and then equipping for free onto a chump.
>>
>>48380434
I have imperious perfect and sludge strider built; tribal elves and artifacts, respectively.

Its definitely a different game from regular edh. While you can still sometimes do some whacky things, it really comes down to creature heavy boardstates.

Naya might be fun, but I would go with Wolly Thoctar at the helm, cheap to get out, effective beater.

so I know there are people who look for DM's on Roll20, but this is the first time I've ever got a message from a group wanting ME to run THEIR game. I pick my players, I don't let them pick me.

Is this a thing now?

there was probably a good reason why your DM left, is my thinking...but maybe I'm just paranoid...

People feel entitled to being players and genuinely scared of the work GMs put into their role. Usually what I do is accept the role and then proceed to take 0 suggestions and runs what I want to run because if the players wanted their little pre-planned adventure they would have DM'd it.

So I was reading the Silmarillion and this bit about the Ringwraiths caught my attention

>Men proved easier to ensnare. Those who used the Nine Rings became mighty in their day, kings, sorcerers, and warriors of old. They obtained glory and great wealth, yet it turned to their undoing [...] one by one, sooner or later, according to their native strength and to the good or evil of their wills in the beginning, they fell under the thraldom of the ring that they bore and under the domination of the One, which was Sauron's. And they became for ever invisible save to him that wore the Ruling Ring, and they entered into the realm of shadows. The Nazgûl were they, the Ringwraiths, the Enemy's most terrible servants; darkness went with them, and they cried with the voices of death.

The Nazgul are supposed to be a mix of Black Numenoreans and Easterlings, which had rather warped perceptions about the setting they lived in to say the least. Except for the few that remained faithful, the Numenoreans degenerated into a borderline death cult and later were rused into downright Morgoth worship by Sauron, believing Middle-Earth to have come from darkness, thinking the Ainur to be evil spirits and Iluvatar to be a fabrication of the Valar to keep them in line. The Easterlings are seen to think Elves are demons at several points, most likely due to Morgoth's meddling back on the First Age. The one i can recall right now is from Children of Hurin

>But they dared not yet lay hands on the Lady of Dor-lómin, or thrust her from her house; for the word ran among them that she was perilous, and a witch who had dealings with the white-fiends: for so they named the Elves, hating them, but fearing them more.

This is similar to what Gollum has to say about Sam's elven rope

>‘It hurts us, it hurts us,’ hissed Gollum. ‘It freezes, it bites! Elves twisted it, curse them! Nasty cruel hobbits! That’s why we tries to escape, of course it is, precious. We guessed they were cruel hobbits. They visits Elves, fierce Elves with bright eyes. Take it off us! It hurts us.’

The original Elves also were convinced that Orome was an evil spirit and the leader of some sort of Wild Hunt

>Yet many of the Quendi were filled with dread at his coming; and this was the doing of Melkor. For by after-knowledge the wise declare that Melkor, ever watchful, was first aware of the awakening of the Quendi, and sent shadows and evil spirits to spy upon them and waylay them. So it came to pass, some years ere the coming of Oromë, that if any of the Elves strayed far abroad, alone or few together, they would often vanish, and never return; and the Quendi said that the Hunter had caught them, and they were afraid. And indeed the most ancient songs of the Elves, of which echoes are remembered still in the West, tell of the shadow-shapes that walked in the hills above Cuiviénen, or would pass suddenly over the stars; and of the dark Rider upon his wild horse that pursued those that wandered to take them and devour them

This caused many of the Elves to remain in the East, and those became the Avari. A good chunk were turned into orcs, but they're still around into the second and presumably third age. They even had some contact with the Edain when they were going westwards, which is one reason why the Elves at Beleriand quickly grasp their language. They NEVER find out what the hell was going on in the West during all those years, and are presumably the least powerful Elves since they never saw even a reflection of the Two Trees nor received any of the knowledge of the Valar. They're essentially a blank slate. One early version of Eol made him the only named Avari elf, though he was later changed to a Sindar. He's notorious for being one of the only evil or at least very morally ambiguous Elves, regardless of Easterling superstitions

We also get this bit from the Rohirrim about Galadriel

>‘Then there is a Lady in the Golden Wood, as old tales tell!’ he said. ‘Few escape her nets, they say. These are strange days! But if you have her favour, then you also are net-weavers and sorcerers, maybe.’ He turned a cold glance suddenly upon Legolas and Gimli

I had more stuff in mind, but to cut to the chase before my connection goes to shit again:

There could be a campaign based off Easterling perceptions about the setting, with the players being some of the nondescript Nazgul before they're completely corrupted. How do you think this would work out?

Hey /tg/, I've been homebrewing a humanless setting for 5e, and I have encountered a problem. When making the tiefling civilization, I intended to make a society of philosophers, clerics, and wizards that also practiced slavery (genasi, inspired by tales of wizards with djinn and elemental servants) with hellenistic, byzantine, persian, arab, and jacksonian american influences. Somehow I ended up with a society that almost entirely revolves around a brutal system of racial slavery, who are also wizards, instead of a society of wizards who also practice slavery.

I wanted each of the races in the setting to have civilizations with a morality and system of values different from modern day, but I know that race-based chattel slavery will be like hanging a "Official Evil Faction: genocide for sweet loot and xp" sign in the minds of your average player. I want to put my players in a strange, foreign setting, where people think and act differently than they do here. I don't want there to be anything they can easily reduce to some cliche to cling to, or re-wage the American Civil War.

Ideas I have so far to take the rougher edges off the tiefling civilization is to make slaves able to purchase their manumission, forbid the separation of families, mandatory emancipation after certain periods of time, different classes of slaves (some nicer than others), or religious traditions that encourage manumitting slaves on holy days.

Is there some way I can make their society less galling to modern eyes? What are some alternate systems of slavery that have existed? What are some protections or rights some civilizations have granted slaves, serfs, bondsmen, and thralls?

How do you do monks?
I prefer arbiters of the peace types, sort of like a spiritual police who will decimate demons and deamons who dare enter their protected village.
In my campaign, they carry cloth wrapped rods of wood, which they use like chimes to signal where they are, and to dispense holy water. When confronted, this allows me to do a couple of things.
First bulshit what ever they had to be whatever manuever weapon i need it to be, and secondly, to deal non lethal blows so as to not tpk my players, who are all on a evil campaign.

He said "like chimes", not that they literally chime. Presumably they clack when shaken or banged together.

The rest of his post was easy to understand. He's saying the wrapped wood is easy to bullshit (i.e fudge, improvise) as whatever weapon he wants for that combat, and that it delivers non-lethal blows that won't kill his players.

Players: Does your GM do voices? Are they good at it? Do you think it adds to the narrative, or is it just a fun thing within your expectations?

GMs: Do you do voices? Do you think you're good at it? What motivates you to do or avoid doing voices?

>GM

Yes, and I'm pretty good at it. It's good for adding colour and making NPCs memorable. The main thing is to put emotion and character into it, even if it's a little bit hammy (as long as you don't go crazy with derpy falsettos for female characters). Accents are useful, I can do a good range of different anglophone accents plus a few foreign ones, they're not vital though. I throw in some body language and facial expressions that players can associate with the voice for that character too. Sometimes I'll even use a minor prop like a hat or shades. It all contributes.

The absolute worst GM voices are when the GM just mumbles or ums and ahs a lot - or worse, reads out prewritten dialogue in a flat monotone. I've had GMs who did one or both of those things and it makes it a lot harder to get immersed or even pay attention. Players have a harder time remembering characters when they all talk in the exact same way. If you can't do voices at all then it might be better to narrate in third person rather than read dialogue (e.g "the captain angrily asks you where you're going" vs "Hey you! Where are you going?").
>>
>>48376096
I do a lot of voices, but I'm semi-shit at it. But that's ok because we mostly use edge of the empire as an excuse to drink heavily. I think it adds to fun though and makes NPCs more memorable so I would recommend GMs at least give it a try
>>
>>48376096
Recently got into a game with a GM who actually does voices. I'd say it's a bit of both fun and helps the narrative.

I do voices to make the world feel more populated, and for immersion. No old woman is going to sound the same as the young guard down the street. I've never heard complaints so I guess I'm okay.

Classic situation.

What this player wants, and what the rest of the group (and you) want are two different things. Imagine if you had written it from his perspective:

>be me
>really love dungeon exploration, killing dangerous monsters, generally being heroic, etc.
>rest of group just wants to sit around roleplaying how drunk they get at the tavern in the starting village for 45 minutes at a time

>later, GM asks us if we're having fun
>THOSE players: "Yeah, but can we stop focusing so much on combat and do more slice-of-life stuff?"

Everyone would tell the player to just leave the group because they're obviously not a good fit for him.
