We all know very well that each weapon was always made in a certain context and will always perform better or worse depending on the situation and the way it is used. That's entirely granted from the beginning, but that doesn't answer nor break the question. Indeed, we're not talking about the BEST or most efficient weapon, but about the most versatile, which is different.

So which melee weapon is useful in the widest range of contexts and situations? Which can be used in the highest number of different ways? Which offers the highest number of possible fighting styles, each with its own pros and cons?

Of course, just answering "the sword" will not be enough, as many different kinds exist that cannot all be used in the same ways. Fore example, the egyptian khopesh, while being an interesting one, is very bad at thrusting and needs the support of a shield. Therefore, one could say that, however good this weapon is at what it does, it is pretty limited in the variety of fighting styles it allows.

Let's say I'm a weapon master of exceptional talent and experience. Which melee weapon would I choose if I wanted to surprise my opponent the highest number of times in the course of a single fight by changing the way I move, defend and attack? That definitely is my question.

I already have several hypotheses, but I'm not really satisfied or sure of myself yet, and that's why I came here to ask for your insight:
>The one and a half hand longsword: cuts, thrusts, usable one handed or two handed, two edges, usable as a hammer, decent reach without being too long to wear about, usable against armor (although not well).
>The halberd: spear point, axe/hammer head (some variants replace this with a hammerhead), rear beak/hook, underside of the axe head (used to disarm opponents or pull horsemen off their mounts), side of the shaft to push and strike opponents, pommel at the base of the shaft (counter-weight and bludgeon).
>The rapier: simplicity is strength.
>Something else?

This.

Okay, it's shit in combat and was never made to kill or to defend onself. Is there a true weapon comparable to the swiss army knife, then? Any ideas?

The halberd looks pretty close to this. Maybe we could invent something even crazier in the same style, like, I don't know, a halberd with a sword sticked on the bottom.

The Ghostbusters RPG was the precursor for the D6 System.

So the modern incarnation you're looking for already exists, in the form of all the various D6 System versions, clones, and hacks.

For simplicity's sake, Mini Six is probably #1.

I think it would depend on the god. Jealous gods who care only for themselves wouldn't offer anything. Lawful gods would probably treat it as a business transaction and offer something worth the cost. Perhaps chaotic gods would offer something entirely based on their whim. Generous, giving gods regardless of alignment would work for that power.

>when you minmax
Feels good being capable, who would make a sub-par build for something as objective as "roleplaying"?
11 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>48395411

You can be par or above par without min/maxing. Min/maxing implies you have reached the absolute ceiling of efficiency. You are so far above par that nothing even beats your results. There is certainly no need to go that far, as by default, it precludes many options that are open for players to pick as they fancy. For example, if one wishes to specialize in two schools rather than min/max one, or if someone wishes to play a ranged character in a system where ranged is inferior to melee. As long as you succeed in all your goals, why sacrifice so much just to overshoot and overkill?
>>

Disregarding the eternal debate over 5e rangers and their viability/balance as a class, I find myself in a dilemma, /tg/.

My campaign involves a great deal of travel and many kinds of foes, and though the party Ranger has not been getting the absolute short end of the stick, I feel like the class's key abilities don't really come up. To that extent, do you all think simply extending the benefits of Natural Explorer to all terrain types particularly unbalances the class in any particular way? Similarly, any ideas for how to do something similar with Favored Enemy? Both of those applying universally feels like it takes away a bit of customization from the character, but adds a lot of feel to the class and neither of them have particularly overwhelming numerical benefits.
21 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>48395253
Rangers problems is mostly GM's not letting them take advantage of there power for exploring and knowledge, because they are too used to handwaving those thing.

Natural explorer is actually a fine and even quite powerful ability if you use it right as the GM. Have a mix of using their favored terrain and not, so opening up another terrain type feels like a big thing.
>>
I think what you're describing would be fine. Personally I'd say they should still have to choose their favored terrain and enemy per long rest or something (at least for favored enemy)

I guess it makes more than one ranger per party less viable, but there's plenty of class features that can only benefit a party once
>>
>>48395309
This sounds like the ideal solution, but I haven't had any ranger players so I can't weigh in on how well it works in practice.

If this doesn't work, you could also increase the number of favored enemies/terrains they get at each level.

SO whats the basic requirements to play tabletop rpgs? it seems most if not all use that same set of dice, and follow the same general rules . Which one would be good to start with?
Is http://learntabletoprpgs.com/ good to refer too?
11 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>48394636
Not all use the same dice. I would honestly recommend just asking your buddies what kind of game they would want to play, buying the rulebook, and reading through that rathe than referencing that website. Then see what that game requires. Some games need a full grid to handle combat and a set of ten different dice or tons of the same dice in order to handle a dice pool. Others only need a single dice for everything and can be played entirely in the theater of mind.
>>
>>48394636
Honestly, a 5E game might not be a bad place to start. It'll introduce you to the D20 system, classes, etc. without being too overwhelming.
>>
>>48394636
Different TTRPGs use all the combinations of dice you can think of, plus probably some you can't, plus some use other things instead of dice. Pick a game that sounds cool and get whatever that game uses.

>>48395717
This is a pretty decent suggestion right here. 5e, particularly with some sort of predesigned adventure (or series thereof) is a great way to get started if everyone is unfamiliar with TTRPGs. If you're looking for a preexisting group to play with, they should be able to teach you how to play whatever it is that they play (and if they can't, find a better group).

A few other notes:
Don't start with 3e/3.5/Pathfinder. Whatever people think of the games themselves (I'm not going to comment here), they're very bad for beginners, largely because they like to have boatloads of options you need to pick from, and that can overwhelm newbies.

4e can be the same, though the character builder helps greatly.

A good place to start is asking yourself a few basic questions about what kind of game you want. Do you want fantasy? Scifi? Big damn heroes saving the day? Gritty realism constantly dragging you down so you can feel that much better when you overcome it?

Why is there so little Urban Fantasy that draws on Judeo-Christian mythology?

Cause som dudes think it's true.

Either way that's wrong there's plenty of judeo-christian stuff, it's just usually mixed with other stuff.
>>
Because enough people are currently members of or were raised in Judeo-Christian religions that it makes a good number of people uncomfortable.

Samson pleas for the end of the fight between Rene and Dyrus, if purely because neither he nor any of his companions has any desire to die this day. At this point, fighting Xouide is just so... It's left all of them numb.

Prince Dyrus, along with his mother, Queen Hautclere, and the rest of their army advances on their home castle, intent on taking it back from Dyrus' elder sister whatever it takes. The Empire needs to die, and Rene's warp pendant-wielding sister has gone through all the trouble of bringing all of its remaining fighting-able supporters into one place for the truest final stand of the Gerxel. Swinging his axe around in practice under the watchful eye of his elderly grandfather, Dyrus grows ever more resolved to see this through to the end.

Rene, tending to matters in her new home, receives a report from a pegasus-mounted scout. "Empress," the person says, "Xouide's advance is... Behind schedule, significantly. We think it's meeting resistance in the mountains South of here."

"It will overpower them in due time," she says, more than a little annoyed with the fact that someone is continuing to give her all this trouble, "what about Hautclere?"

"She and her son are... About a day away from the city," the scout says, "and they've brought an army larger than our own. Should you... recall Xouide?"

"No..." Rene shakes her head, "even if I had it return now, the battle would be long decided by the time it showed up with reinforcements. Our own manpower will have to suffice."

"Don't worry, Rene, we can turn this around!" Saye reassures her, pumping a fist.

"I'm all the monster-making we'll need to kick the shit outta these troublemakers," Kristina declares.

Ludwig simply flips another page in his tome, while Cicero, Veiz, and Alfred share resolute looks.

"All of you..." Rene nods, raising the Staff of Katri to cheering. "The Empire does not die here!"

You are now Rene, reflecting in the still-undisturbed chambers of your biological father.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wTIrwav0Ek

A lot of people have fallen in your path, you recall. People who you should have called... Close. August, the honorary elder brother who kept you company in your formulative years. Thinking of him, you remember his resolve, how he built a kingdom from nothing over little more than a decade, left no heirs, but still managed to create a stable enough state that it's survived much of a war without him. You make his ambition your own.

Laurise, your actual, biological younger sister. That Darren fellow spoke once of his granddaughter's gifts, that she never once let her ordinariness prevent her from achieving brilliance, defying a fate of being the lesser twin. Even naturally brilliant Dyrus would sometimes bemoan himself as unable to live up to her example. You make her brilliance your own, planning to utterly defy the fate that has spelled out the Empire's death.

Chiffon, an honorable Director whose means to an end ran an unfortunate clash with your own. His only desire was to ensure the future of his people. In honor of him, and for the sake of your friend, Saye, you named the Garou Valley the first site of Xouide's conquest.

People will call you evil for all you've done. They already have, and some still do.
But you've known your priorities all along. Those who don't understand can get out of your way or they can DIE.

Tears stain the pages of one of Xerxes' old novels as you recall the father who raised you, Waldrick. You recall your aunt-figure, Hera. You remember kindly Omar, and late Emperor Ximeno, going out of his way to tutor you (neither of you could have known about your blood relation, and yet he treated you like his own. You miss Lyka). In their memory, you will take back every bit of Imperial soil your wretched mother has stolen!

>A. Talk to someone (specify)
