Does anyone know a good game for vintage sci-fi from 30's to 50's? Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Metropolis, Forbidden Planet, Fireball XL5, all that good stuff.
I'm talking art deco ships, rings and fins and chrome on everything, fishbowl space helmets, monsters that look like cheap green rubber suits, cheesy plots and borderline Gary Stu space captains. I'd freaking love to just celebrate all the cheesiness of that shit.

You have my eternal gratitude for not using "dieselpunk", "steampunk" or any other "-punk in your post.

Anyways :
X-Plorers is a retro sci fi game that should be what you're looking for.

Metabarons (from the Metabarons/Incal universe) has the same kind of feeling IMO, even if the cheesiness is more modern.

There's also Traveller. I suggest Marc Miller's edition (T4) or the right kind of setting.

Space 1889 is a bit too early, and Rogue Trader done right is basically flash gordon but with skulls everywhere.

You could always use the Buck Rogers Cliffhangers RPG, that might work!

Failing that, anything pulpy - Pulp HERO is something I would recommend, anything d6 - d6 Adventures by WEG, even Savage World if that tickles your fancy.

But actually none of those, go with Hollow Earth Expedition. That will definitely work!

On the Forge World preorder page there are now conversion kits available for Skitarii Hoplites and Peltasts, new elite options for the Skitarii faction. Rules-wise they seem similar to the Cult-Mech electro-priests, but slightly cheaper and tougher. Your thoughts, /tg/?

I need some rules for 30k before I drop money.

But those Peltasts are sexy, sort of remind of me death korps.
>>
I'm worried that the 4+ T4 peltasts will be shot to hell before they get anywhere near a vehicle that is worth 10 haywire guns to kill. 12" range renders them inferior to normal Vanguard with arc rifles imo.

Earlier today I was reading a thread where people were talking about some of the more obscure dice, like d30 and d24, and how to replicate them. I hope this was trolling, but there seemed to be a lot of people who just had no idea how random distribution -- one person suggested trying to roll d30 as d10+d20.

What's a good way to explain why different multiple-die-roll methods work to a beginner? The autist in me wants to express it all mathematically, e.g. d100≡(1d10-1)*10+(1d10-1)+1 or d3=modulo(d6, 3)+1, but I know that that's not exactly very intuitive.

http://www.anydice.com is a good resource for checking the probability curves of die rolls.

There's no helping people who cannot into basic math. Leave them to their diceless freeform hugbox games, eternally arguing about which of two magic ninjas teleports behind the other.
But in all fairness, 1d20+1d10 can be the better option depending on what you want to use it for and whether there's an opposition roll.
>>
>>49203993
>d100 as 2d10
>One of the dice is the tens value, the other is the ones value.
>If both turn up 0, it counts as 100 instead of zero, so that we have a 100 outcome instead of a zero one.
I don't see how that's very difficult.

Yep.

Am I the only person that thinks to have a strength score exceeding 14 or so, you should also be required to have a wisdom of at least over 12.

The sheer willpower it takes to gain a 17-18 strength (barring that of perhaps a slave who is ripped because they will die if they are not) would require you to have excellent willpower.

The same could be argued with some of the other stats, though not as clearly, since strength is the easiest stat to improve IRL.

Discuss?

No that's dumb.
>>
>>49203937
>Am I the only person who wants needless additional complexity?
Sadly no.
>>
>>49203937
Nah, that's bullshit. All of it, frankly. For a professional warrior of any description fitness to do your job is a necessity. If you fight monsters for a living you bet you do your workouts, willpower be damned. Furthermore, all physical stats would require extra training if somehow our character was a worthless neet before they picked up adventuring, not just strength.

Genetics, upbringing and lifestyle etc all play a part in deciding your body type.

G'day, /tg/
What are some ideas for interesting/creatively useful items (magic or otherwise) to give to a stealthy rogue?
37 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
Do they have to be useful? I would rather make items that fuck a rouge over and are bound to him.

Useful though? How about a rope that only he can see. That's it. It can support all kinds of weight and is functionally just a rope, but it is completely undetectable to anybody but the owner of it.
>>
>>49203688

A dick item? A cloak that makes the rouge thinks he it totally invisible but it doesn't. Instead it is a minor glamor that makes it appear that nobody is looking or talking to him while he is wearing it.
>>
Literally anything of holding. Storage is relatively low worry for the dm, and high value for the player.

I gave a player a hat of holding and he liked it.

Pathfinder more like MATHfinder lol.

>ORK NURLY #REKT HIM LE TOO XDDDD

>IS MY BAIT GOOD? XDDD

Come on OP. You've got to put in more effort than this. What you're doing here only rustles me by being such bad bait that it offends my sensibilities.

At least try to appear just stupid, rather than both stupid and obnoxious. People are more likely to take the bait then because they want to put someone down. Don't get me wrong - 'pretending to be retarded' is almost the lowest form of trolling there is, but it's still better than what you're doing. I worry about the state of these boards if the standards get any lower.

Yours truly,

Weird hobbyist pavlovian responses?

I've given myself what can only be described as a pavlovian response to being in a hobbyist environment, especially tabletop where Ithe makes me feel uncomfortable to be in this scenario and not be drinking alcohol. Anyone else got stuff like this?

That's alcoholism, son. 'Social drinking' as a psychological dependency.
>>
>>49202237
Every single game I create involves clones, body modification, and body modifying clones. I don't know if that's actually Pavlovian, but I decided to post anyway because help me.
>>
>>49202315
It's only in a hobbyist environment though. It's pureasy pavlovian. I don't want or feel uncomfortable without alcohol in any other social environment.

Okay, so we know that becoming a hermaphrodite and growing tits is a common thing for Slaaneshii aligned Chaos Space Marines, but has there ever been an instance where a CSM has gone full feminine (pair of tits, body type, the whole shebang) in canon? I'm not saying completely female, I'm just asking if a CSM has ever gone full trap mode.

Not in canon, but with Chaos just about anything is possible.

He starts the game as true neutral. This means that either he actually managed to redeem himself from his supposedly irredeemable crimes, or cosmos only takes the deeds of his current incarnation into account. He has no business being forced to fight in the Blood War either way, he should be going to an appropriate afterlife.

>>49201922
He's True Neutral in his current life, but his "karma" if you will, carries over.

And the original Nameless One has a fuckload of negative karma, so much that a hundred lifetimes of sainthood wouldn't begin to repay it.
>>
>>49201922
Because no matter what Nameless One does in a current lifetime he can never be good.
>>
>>49201922

Even setting aside what his original incarnation did, every time he revived some random person died in his place.

My D&D session is in 4 hours and I just realized I don't like what I had planned for it.

What setting, and have your players rolled their characters already?
If you haven't got a setting why are they making Characters?
>>

No no, this is our second session. I just realized I didn't like my original plan of having a manorial estate that had become sentient and forced the inhabitants to keep a perpetual party going (and not talking about it) lest it would kill everyone.
Lots of animated object enemies.

But I think it would be boring, specially for the cavalier and rogue

Ive been wanting to run a space campaign for awhile now and its finally time, moments ago my group decided to do on. and I'm looking for your help.

Im hoping to spice up the game a bit, what suggestions do you guys have for things that can be done in a space traveller/pirate game?

So far I've got the basic, rob other vessels, track distress signals, and get attacked. What else can i do?

Couple of questions to those who have run or been in this sort of game before.
- is too much piracy a bad thing? or can it be fun to rob a new ship every session?
- How do you do a main campaign? plot?

any other tips?

Lastly, i intend to use gurps, but is there something more suited for space stuff?

If you want to go less pirate and more just space mercenaries then have them join an odd jobs company.

Essentially they'll be guns for hire, ship for hire whatever. They'll receive an email for a job, or multiple jobs and just send them on if every session. Gives variety and less chance the police will always arrest them
>>
>>49201046

Rival pirate captains - friend rivalries, or bitter rivals.

Corrupt space cops/ naval officers who need to be dealt with: both sides might engage in bribes, blackmail, or killing the other party to keep them quiet.

Threats that bring pirates and navy vessels together on the same side - an invasion of some crazy religious cult, or aliens, or ancient auto-replicating robot warfleets from the Age Of War™.

From the anime Bodacious Space Pirates comes the cool idea of insurance fraud. Shipping companies pay pirates to 'attack' them and 'steal' their cargo so that the company can collect on insurance (generally something done when the market value of the cargo has crashed). Even more unsavoury corporations might pay pirates to destroy their older borderline-obsolete ships to collect insurance and save the cost of safely decommisioning them.
>>
>>49201046
I'd bring a few things into consideration.

Governments do not like pirates. They are bad for business. Governments are often dependent on and run by, in some capacity, businessmen. Therefore, as a pirate, you are likely not only to run into lawmen on patrol, but also mercenaries after the price which will invariably crop up on your head. You might also run into Q ships; ships well disguised as merchant-marine vessels, which are actually bristling with hidden turrets and a boarding detachment when you start to board them because they've "surrendered" and "don't want any trouble." These threats are especially likely to crop up if you're the unscrupulous sort of pirate who kills victims instead of making sure they can get back to the nearest spaceport.

Of course, you could go to a place that's lawless, but this presents a whole different other set of difficulties; merchants don't like to go through lawless places, and those that do are going to be armed and escorted appropriately most of the time. Alternatively, they might declare that they're under the protection of a powerful criminal syndicate and that you should therefore not fuck with them, or they might even be pirates themselves.

Here; I picked this up a while ago. It's for the Traveller system, but it still has some interesting ideas in it that might be relevant for a GURPS campaign.
