So a couple of my players have been using disguise self to make one of them look like a hobgoblin. They walked up to the leader and took over the army by force. Now they're trying to take over more armys and absorb them. How should I run this? What would the rules be?

Maybe have one or two of the presumably hundreds of goblins notice something is up?

Disguise self doesnt last forever, either. How the hell are they pulling this off?

Though if you want to roll this in a way that lets them do this, Pathfinder has rules for mass combat and armies and player influence on battles. Check that out.

I'll admit I have a good bit of lore to my settings, but I give it out in doses when the details are relevant so they don't get overwhelmed. Yet I've always got one or two players who don't read it and they think that I'm just pulling random crap out of my ass when it's an established fact and has been for weeks or even months. It's rarely more than 200-300 words in summary (though going into extreme detail is when it gets retarded) but this is a major part of the reason I quit running games. Why bother giving you a setting if you just want to kill shit? Go play WOW if you want to play something where you can ignore the lore.

Anyone here played a game called Battalia?

Friend has it. We tried playing it, but the rules are a clusterfuck and so we got about a quarter through a game before saying fuck it and playing something else.

Is it worth investing time to figure it out, or should we just play something else right off the bat next time?

What dice systems do you guys like.
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Legends of the Wulin. It's weird but wonderful.

It's kinda like Reign in that you roll a pool of d10s looking for sets of dice- That is, multiple dice showing the same numbers.

Each die or set of dice is worth ten per dice in the set, plus the value on the dice. So one six is 16, two fours are 24 etc.

The neat thing about this? Every set of dice you roll can be used to make an action, with some limits. It's the only system I've ever seen which successfully allows you to undertake multiple actions on the same roll.

The base pool is 7d10, so you'll generally get at least a couple of sets to make use of, if you're lucky you might get three doubles or a big set like a triple or higher, while if you're unlucky you might get all singles.

I tend to prefer systems without flat probability. Bell curves are far sexier than flat probability.

Although, if you're going to be going with flat probability, it better be d%. D% is really great.

I'm not really into MtG (Which I assume this is about).
That being said, he just seems like a dude who is hugely into numbercrunching statistics. How do you come away with the idea that he is angry about something?
>>
>>50379827
Splinter Twin was a very popular deck in a format of MTG called "Modern." It was also the closest thing to a tier <1 deck (in other words, almost unbeatable) because it was a deck that had a combo kill but if the combo was disrupted it still had the ability to grind out the opponent. But even if you could disrupt the combo for one turn, the deck was so resilient that you could combo off the next turn. Or the disruption for the first attempt wasn't even good enough to stop the combo and the deck went off anyway (this happened a lot). This is not in line with what Wizards of the Coast (the game's owners) wanted a combo deck to be because it became too consistent and was borderline so dominant in the format that sideboards (extra cards to be subsituted in over the course of a match) or even entire decks were built just to beat Twin, and they still had a difficult time doing so. In addition, because the combo was so strong and easily incorporated into any deck playing the colors blue and red, there was little incentive to not play Twin if you were playing blue and red in a deck.

So WotC banned Twin to make the format more diverse, and it worked for a couple months until new cards came out and people broke the format again because Modern is inherently trash (but that's a different discussion entirely).

So basically, the Twin banning was justified and did fix some of the problems of Modern, but people got mad anyway because they'll complain about anything.

Blades in the Dark could work if you're willing to stretch it.

Hey /tg/
As DM I always had the issue with some players regarding roleplaying emotions.
Several players so far always failed to react accordingly to various situations, especially when fear, surprise, or anything that would pose a strong reaction (except anger) came up.
Despite talking of this with my players, while some attempted to adjust, others failed or outright refused to consider to do any less.
Does this happen in your games?
Am I wrong as DM to request more emotional involvement IC if a character is not immune to fear effects or similar?
Tell me your opinions on the topic.
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Its awkward for most people to show emotion to a fake event. Being able to do so in a believable manner is what part of what makes someone a good actor.

Anger is easy. Its not a "weak" emotion like fear or sadness. So pretending to be mad is easy and less awkward. Also anger is easier to simply induce naturally.

Fear requires a sense of danger. The players themselves are not in any danger so this is a hard mound to cross. This is where immersion and mood setting become very important. Lighting and sound help a ton. Staying on topic and not having OOC discussions is also really important in these times.

Sadness requires a mix of attachment and relatability. Murderhobos don't get sad because they don't get attached to things and are barely human emotion wise.

Suprise, make better surprises desu. If its a plot thing remember that you have way more knowledge of the plot than the player does. Something might seem like a big twist to you but if you don't properly convey the situation to the players it can fly over their head.

DM cannot ask for more roleplay. All you can do is create an environment that supports and encourages roleplay.

What a constructive and helpful post.

Here, have a nun.
>>
>>50378668

Well, I do agree. But I had players that despite online gaming (so they wouldn't really require much effort on their side as much it could had been in person), and having situations where a character legitimately could be afraid or at very least confused IC (the ground under their feet being swallowed, meeting for the first time a colossal dragon, being at the verge of a TPK, and so on), has been roleplayed with all the emotional range that a rock could have.
Even in cases where a character has a phobia, I had reactions akin to just look the object of their phobia at a distance and walk off calmly without any visible or just perceptible form of distress of any kind.

I played (well ran) Legend of the Elements a little while ago. It's a PbtA game based on Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Combat was pretty cool, fights tended to be interesting in terms of the bending going on, sadly none of my players played non-bender combative characters so I don't know how well that goes but there seems to be decent options for non-benders so I imagine it's much the same. One aspect I'm not as sold on is its version of the fronts system which seems a little too focused on having the GM plan a linear story which clashes with how PbtA games tend to go. Other than that the strengths and weaknesses are pretty standard for PbtA games.

Has /tg/ been to any escape rooms? We can book out rooms at our university and it seemed like a cool idea.

Any puzzle idea/suggestions or places we can get a simple like, pre-written thing to try out to see if it takes off with the rpg soc?

The one we went to was set in a laboratory where someone was trying to cure zombies; clues lead to a painting with a key behind it and which gave us a uv torch that revealed mirrored numbers to unlock a phone and also reveal missing numbers for a math puzzle, that gave us a code to use in a phone that got us a code to get into the next room.

There they had a load of pages from a book which had a missing page that linked up to the final code to get out

>Has /tg/ been to any escape rooms?
me and some friends did one once, there was a zombie in the room on a chain every 10(?) minutes the chain extended, if it touched you then you were out of the game. The roles we fell into
>a couple people searching the room for the puzzles
>me and one other person solving them once found
>one guy using a makeshift shield and poking stick to bait the zombie away from the gatherers
>one person making notes on all the clues found so far for easy reference
by the time we escaped it was a well-oiled machine

I floss with Life Fibers. Every once in a while, a thug will fail to realize the threat I pose, and come at me with a knife. Catching and shattering said weapons with my teeth always makes for some picture-perfect reactions.

I also use my biokinesis to grow a second layer of teeth formed out of hardened Life Fibers (in front of my normal ones), but that doesn't sound as flippant as the floss bit and is nowhere near as much fun to say.
