Hey /tg/, what do we call this setting? Its almost unarguably a mix of scifi and fantasy genre, but whats the setting group? Post-post apocalypse?

Scifi that stretches so far into the future that it surpasses human downfall from our overuse of technology, and passes into an almost medieval fantasy age once more.

Most of the examples I have are anime, which is weird since I don't even really like anime as much as most of my gaming group. Stuff like:

Nausicaa, Last Exile, Castle in the Sky, Desertpunk, Gun x Sword, etc.

Anyone have recommendations for more media to consume of this style?

How do you like weapons in your settings /tg/? More realistic, full animu giant swords or a blend of both?

Also please dump pics of non katana, single sided swords if you have any.
156 posts and 111 images submitted.
>>
>>50392183
Unless you are playing an animu game, why would you use animu weapons in the first place?
>>
>>50392183
Yes, or yes, and absolutely not. We can play "HEMAfags sperg about the relative merits of the basilard vs. katzbalger" or we can play "First Tsurugi vs Sparda sword, which is more badass", but never the twain shall meet.
For that way lies madness.
>>
>Weapons
Full visual realism, but skipping functional realism. Only real weapons look like actual, intimidating killing tools. Animu/fantasy weapons look like plastic toys.
Also real weapons look elegant and aesthetically pleasing in many cases, while fantasy ones look like cheap shit, equivalent of rapper blings and plastic crowns for teenage "princesses"
But going into functional realism autism territory, IE, swords are useless against armor etc. is not for me.
>Armor
Much, much more liberal. Though most fantasy designs are still out since my foremost requirement towards armor is "must be believably created with pre-industrial age methods and materials" (so again, it's mostly visual realism instead of function realism, except it is more pronounced there). And your typical wow/anime armor breaks it hard. Function is not as important as long as it looks wearable (not too bulky/constraining) and seems to offer some protection. Good example would be "Vikings" TV series armor, which isn't historical, obviously, and most likely wouldn't stand against a real test of function, but if yoo don't overanalyze it, at a glance it looks okay.
>Age and Style
I'm generally more drawn towards ancient/dark age settings than to full/late medieval. Though i usually include longswords (actual, two-handed longswords, not D&D misnomer for arming sword) because fuck, I like them, and more importantly, I like swords in general so I have to have some two-handed variant.

What are the upsides and downsides of entirely, 100% stealing the xcom 1/2 combat system and applying them to tabletop?

What circumstances does the xcom 1/2 combat system not account for? How can these be easily rectified?

FFG already does something similar by giving each player a move and an action. Some of the things are solved in confusing ways, eg drawing a weapon is a manoever and not an action, but the system works and is simple to use.

I was thinking about taking the opposite approach and using Eva Borderline mechanics for making an XCOM-like.
I'm still years apart from my goal, but this is what I want to do. Plenty of people just limit their life goals to getting an Asuka. Others just want a steady job doing business applications so they can game during the weekend. Once I become a real programmer, I'm making XCOM with robots.

How do you guys like the idea of a monthly MTG tournament hosted right here, on our very own board?

Personally, I like the idea because /tg/ seems less competitive, and more focused on enjoying the game, which would make it a pretty casual setup.

What formats would you like to see in such a tourney? Personally I would say Commander makes for the most flavor and interesting gameplay, but that's just me.

I'd go for it. It'd probably be a pain in the ass to get set up though. Finding someone with a decent enough rig or the space to host a server would be a hassle.

I'd go for Commander as well. Makes everyone's decks a little more unique.

Would it be a standard 1v1 bracket tournament, or something more interesting?

You don't need to host a server, passwords exist
Just do standard 1v1 or Modern

Tell me more about the worst setting.

>adventurers are commonplace, heavily taxed, and treated like naive dreamers wherever they go. "Get a real job" is the most common response after announcing yourself as an adventurer

>there are 8,000 named major Gods, with a combined 33,000 holy days each year. The Gods regularly visit the world, and are prone to punish people who forget things like the anniversary of the first time they milked a yak.

>every square foot is sought after and contested by at least four factions. If the PCs defeat one cult/orc army/necromancer/dragon/thieves guild/hag coven/drow house, another faction immediately moves in to maintain the status quo

>battlefields include stands and seating so PCs and villagers can watch the High-level NPCs solve everything

>ancient artifacts are considered the property of the state, and must be donated to museums upon discovery

>the food is okay. Not great, just okay.

>High-level NPCs like to send lower-level adventurers on quests to find impossible items, only to toss the hen's teeth and horse feathers in a bin when found

>There are plenty of capable and observant city guards. There are also a lot of very annoying laws that are enforced.

If that's from a parody setting then it's brilliant. If it's serious, it should be a parody and the players are just normal people who travel around to watch things unfold and get front row seats to all sorts of generic rpg-setting buggery.
>>
>dragons are always whispered about as ever-present threats, and anyone who would slay one would become a reknowned hero
>they are never actually encountered
>>

>adventurers are commonplace, heavily taxed
I actually came up with a setting based around that a ways back. I called it 'dungeons and bailiffs', and it was basically 'go adventure for meagre returns or your gear gets repoed', and 'go hunt adventurers that stole their own gear from the bank that owned it'.

>enchanted mirrors of crystal and steel, some which fit in a palm, others the size of a large tome save for quarter-inch thickness
>through these portable mystical foci, man can divine information from an akashic library, communicate through the other side of the world, capture and immortalize memories through sound and imagery, and work many more sorceries provided one has the savvy (and, at times, the coin)

I cannot be the only one who thinks that smartphones and tablets would hardly be out of place in a high fantasy, high magic setting, can I be?
I am not talking about modern fantasy settings. I am talking about high fantasy settings with magic-based smartphones and tablets added in, maybe with outright computers too.

Imagine wizards sliding through page after page of digital spellbooks, and tracing glyphs and magic circles with styluses. The strongest of magicians conjure great structures and demiplanes with modeling-like programs ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzQ6gRAEoy0 ).
Some of these devices could even be like familiars or psicrystals, with their own hyperspecialized intelligences to assist their users in various tasks.

Non-spellcasters can find as many uses for these devices as we would in our world. Rapid communications, capturing images and video, and social media could all change the face of a world (and obviate some types of magic, counterbalancing spellcasters' specialized uses of smartphones and tablets).

Not all of them need to have interfaces of glass in fantasy. Some of them could be tiny little crystals, bones, or other baubles that project "hard light" illusions that can support a moderate amount of weight, effectively simulating sci-fi holographic interfaces. They could even project styluses or keyboards of illusory "hard light."

The Cryptomancer RPG does something like this, but does not go all the way with the metaphor, and focuses mostly on the hacking themes.
How would you imagine such devices could be used in a fantasy setting?

This sorta easiness to handle and distribute information changes the structures of society so deeply that it's hard to still be medieval when you have it. Most high magic setting ignore the deeper applications of magic, so you still grow crops the normal way, even if you do so in a floating field, or in sight of a magic flying city guarded by automaton dragons. You blacksmith still uses hammer and tools and even smithing automatons are just humanoids with hammer hands that smith in the tradional way rather than industrial machines...People still have horses although teleport is a thing, and non mage merchants still exist although they'd never be able to compete with magical merchants in terms of amount and speed of goods moved.

So magical tablets are a bit like that. They'd render libraries useless, and medieval equivalents of schools and universities too since you can just comune through them to find spells. Mix that with the fact that people with them also can use spells like teleport, and basically your setting is a magiocracy where anyone without magic is just...eh.

Which might work for some people but i find boring.

Okay, I'm currently preparing for a GURPS campaign where the PCs are modern day mercenaries, working for a mysterious organisation.

The first few missions will be relatively mundane. Then the party starts to find out that they're pawns in a global secret war over strange supernatural artefacts (they all look like grey bricks and give you a spell per artefact). These artefacts drive you insane over time, of course. Get enough of them, and you invoke horrible rituals (one can destroy the world).

Point is, can you give me some ideas for covert/SpecOps missions to send the PCs on? Remember, they don't have to have supernatural or horror elements right away. And each artefact can grant corrupting arcane knowledge or a "magic" power - one per artefact and somewhat limited (maybe requires the physical artefact to be present to be used).

Locate and find out what happened to a crashed plane (the pilot was driven insane by the artefact cargo)

Pose as bodyguards for a smuggler and gain his trust until you find where his main warehouse is, then take him out and report.

Plan a heist into a local museum/palace, officially to prevent antiques from being destroyed by the conflict.

Track a supposed traitor by decyphering his mad ramblings and following him from safehouse to safehouse.

Addendum,

X-stan military base gone silent. Investigate quietly as local government isn't that friendly to outside interference.

Intercept a military escort carrying a dictator's stolen goods as he flees a collapsing and rioting nation.

Intercept a military cargo plane mid-flight carrying precious artifacts found in X-stan.

Escort archaeological dig at a tomb

Start off with extracting a spy from a building surrounded by extremists (generic). Make sure that that the extraction fails and the mission is now to defend the building against extremists until help arrives.

Here comes the fun part; the spy has an artifact. The spell associated with the artifact gives opponents a "Tower of Babel" effect within a radius of 50 meters. All of the extremists will speak languages that cannot be recognized by anyone (players or each other) if they are inside the circle. Players may realize this if they push outside of the circle and will hear their enemies yelling about artifacts or something like that. You can either use this as an optional lead or to tip off the players about the plot. If you want to do the second one, I suggest that you make a secondary objective to take out an emplaced weapon that is helping the attackers.

Is this the kind of thing you were looking for?

Most mages become pyrotechnic experts.

Clerics go work in their respective churches.

Rogues/thiefs probably go into the security business.

Question from a new EP GM about the adventure "Think Before Asking", and I suppose spoilers, if anyone hasn't done/read it and plans to.

I don't think my players/characters will necessarily be smart enough to figure out the main hinge of that adventure, that being the oracle and what not to do

Any tips on how to possibly run it and make it a bit easier for players to get without necessarily heavy handedly guiding them or dumbing it down too much?
