The players have a goblin army

So a couple of my players have been using disguise self to make one of them look like a hobgoblin. They walked up to the leader and took over the army by force. Now they're trying to take over more armys and absorb them. How should I run this? What would the rules be?

Disguise self doesnt last forever, either. How the hell are they pulling this off?

Though if you want to roll this in a way that lets them do this, Pathfinder has rules for mass combat and armies and player influence on battles. Check that out.

Have a shaman or something call them out and then have your player have to fight their way out of an entire army.

Ultimately that depends on what your players want to DO with their Goblin army, but ultimately it sounds like the game has evolved into more of a war strategy game.

So, you know, War stuff:
-Acquiring resources such as: finances, weapons, food, territory, etc..

-Conquering other goblin communities to create and draft a large force and increasingly manage more goblins.

-Thinking up strategies and plans to effectively sack, pillage, and siege villages, communities for more resources and land.

You know- War stuff.
And when it's least convenient you have shapechange despell.

Do this. Don't fuck them over, don't have the army turn on them, don't do any of that. Turn it into a game about managing the army.

But it's a goblin army, so make it about managing a bunch of tiny bumbling retards with incredibly disgusting habits. Make sessions more about the colorful shenanigans that their army gets into that they have to manage later than about other shit. Make it comedic. Make it an absolute shitshow.

Other possible scenarios/mechanics your new and exciting war march could/should consider:

-Acquiring and paying for mercenary contracts to supplement your awful, trash goblins: Ogres armed with clubs and slings to act as living siege weapons, kobold contractors to help with engineering and construction, MAYBE some Orcs or Barbarian Humans/Centaurs with nothing to do.

-Overcoming the awkward transitional period where you're trying to properly train your Goblin forces on how to use Muskets and maybe a Cannon or two if you can find one.

-Managing and founding a respectable Goblin Town/Fortress that you can use as a jumping board or staging point for all of your future raids and sieges on the neighboring counties or even city-states if you grow in sufficient power.

-Keeping your various forces not only paid, but happy, having them constantly supplied with: alcohol, smokes, occasional escort & religious services.

-Competing with other semi-hostile war-bands who are on the path as well, but think you're a shit heel punk for whatever reason.

In a perverse twist of fate, the goblins managed to find the rebellious daughter of a powerful and brutal local aristocrat just after she escaped from his hall. They quickly bring her to the PCs, glowing and basking with pride and expecting to be congratulated. The warriors of the aristocrats retinue are significantly more formidable than the ragtag goblin army, and it would really be best if she were returned home. The goblins misunderstand any kind of order to take her back and will generally engage in stupid hijinks. They might be doing this on purpose to help their masters, who are obviously humans pretending to be hobgoblins, fit in. The girl is a spoiled brat and likes this a lot more than being locked up in a palace and refuses to go away.

The army camps out in a forest clearing and discovers a burrow of giant dire weasels. The goblins "tame" the weasels and bridle them. The players must adapt to having large aggressive mustelids ridden by screaming goblins cavorting about occasionally eating the runtiest goblins and digging inconvenient tunnels everywhere. If not stopped, the dire weasels will eventually breed completely out of control. The goblins won't see a problem with this.

The players are awoken by raucous screaming at the edge of the encampment. When they arrive at the site, a large wagon, piled high with barrels of beer and crewed by dwarves, is at stand off distance and having a screaming argument with several goblins. The subject of the argument is extremely difficult to discern through all the insults and screaming. Portray the dwarves as apoplectic irrational subhumans. Sort of like goblins, but with better dress sense, pinkish skin, and beards.

So many awesome ideas. The worst part is they're doing this on their downtime in between heroics. On of them has spit personality disorder and truly believes that's he's general skrang when transformed, and a true neutral that's along for the ride and trying to train a few goblins to be druids.
