Honest opinions on Fate as a system?
To elaborate a bit, opinions from those who have actually played it or are running it would be nice.
>>50371803
>>50371851
Honest opinion is that it's great. It really encourages roleplaying and building the narrative of what is happening with the GM. It alleviates some of the burden off the GM as players try to invoke their traits and describe their actions to the GM. Our group switched to it and never looked back.
There is one thing about it though, it does require the right group of players. Even one slightly 'that guy' can break the whole system down and that is why I think it gets a lot of flak. The system is also pretty loose with how you create your assets, and a lot of new players, or players experienced with more rules-heavy systems can find it hard to grasp. But that's mostly with the mindset.
So it's a shit system with what could be considered a majority of player types. But the best RPG system you will ever play when you are lucky enough to be in that ideal group of awesome roleplayers.
It's okay. Not my favorite system, but I can play it just fine as long as the group also can. Not all groups can play it though, especially some of its earlier iterations, that had many more aspects than more modern versions, but few to no guidelines for those aspects aside from "Should be usable in both positive and negative ways".
What are your thoughts on initiative? There are many ways to handle it. What method do you think works best? What ideas do you have for handling it better? Is it even necessary?
Depends on the situation
>there are some systems where the stat/skill for initiative is the same as the one for perception
I love Fate but jesus christ
In theory I like the way v20 handles it
You roll it for every round so it doesn't feel like your playing a strategy game makes combat a bit tiresome though

Assuming you want to get into the tabletop it's a pretty simple process
1. Find out if any stores host a local gaming night or find friends who will do it at their house
2. look around local stores and ebay for secondhand stuff and rulebooks
3. strip and repaint the second hand stuff along with any new stuff that you couldn't find a discount on
4. play at whatever locale you have for playing that you found in step 1

hello i have a question. if i decapitated/amputated someone with a lightsaber (or an even hotter futuristic weapon), wouldnt it cauterize their wound as fast as it travels through? so the head/limb would remain with the body. sorry for autistic questiom, dropped out of school so i cant answer it myself.
>>50377027
Technically someone should explode every time they are hit by a light saber it is so hot.
So the arm just gets flung away by the explosive power of water vapor.
>>50377027
Gee, if only there was a massively popular movie series where people have limbs cut off with lightsabers all the time, you could already know the answer.
But alas, it does not exist.

FATAL
Is a ghast a type of spirit, or it is a palette-swapped ghoul?
No, it can't be both, it can't be a third thing, and it most definitely does not depend on the setting.
I demand a single objectively correct answer!
>>50376536
It is a type of vampire.
>>50376536
The name probably originates from the adjective "Ghastly"
>from Old English gæstan "to torment, frighten" (see ghost (n.)). Spelling with gh- developed 16c. from confusion with ghost. Middle English also had gastful in the same sense, but this is now obsolete. Sidney and Shakespeare also used ghastly as an adverb. Related: Ghastliness.
The first modern instance of "Ghast" used as a name for a monstrous creature came from Lovecraft. Ghasts were predatory creatures of the Dreamlands with something akin to kangaroos if I remember correctly.
They were then taken as monsters and upgraded versions of Ghouls in D&D and spread from there.
The association with ghouls comes from the fact that the scene in which they are described in The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath features ghouls as well, and ghasts are described as predators for ghouls.
>>50376621
In other words:
The source from which 'ghast' as a type of creature has been spread out and became popular is D&D, which presented it as a stronger ghoul - aka a cannibalistic, cursed humanoid with a paralyzing touch.
The source from which it was taken from D&D was Lovecraft who had them as large, eerie predators with some humanoid traits and other monstrous; aside from their look they were 'mundane' creatures, although they inhabited the dreamlands/the dimensions beyond.
These are the only milestones you may have as a source. Most people nowadays are used to connect ghasts with undeath, or at least with morbid themes and graveyard settings, because of D&D.

Sounds like a GM problem, not a system problem.
If your pathfinder game had 53 pages of backstory would you have the same difficulty?

>>50374662
Oh I'm fully aware of this. What I'm concerned about is that I've committed myself to a campaign run by this guy, and it sounds like it's going to be terrible.
So a buddy of mine wants me to arrange a one-off session of D&D to get his lady into RPGs.
Allright, fair enough, except I have never arranged a game that was not at least four sessions long. I got NO idea how to do a One-off!
What do I do /tg!?
>>50374549
1. Clear, concise plot that fits into one session (assuming something like 3-4 hours it's more then enough time)
2.Don't be afraid to push the action / slightly railroad, this is not an epic country-spanning campaign, it's one conflict at best. A good way to do it might be time limit - say, the ship PCs are travelling on is sinking and they must cooperate to escape by a boat.
3. Premade characters. Make a few templates with a couple of trait suggestions, then disribute them/let players choose.
4. Fast and loose. Again, push the action. Things that may take a lot of time/coordination/rolls (like trying to save other passengers) you can shorten to three or four rolls then tell players how they did it (or let them tell, preferrably).
In general, three rolls per encounter is a good guideline.
>>50374549
I think 5e has a short intro adventure called "A most potent brew". Could try that.
Although, maybe you should ask around for the new player's expectations. There's a pretty good chance low-level murderhoboing isn't actually that appealing as an intro for someone who thought there'll be epic adventures.
I also think D&D is wasted on oneshots, but eh.
You could try the adventures from the Adventurer's League. Most of them are designed to be completed within four hours.
