It's one last roll of the dice, and heroes are usually dumb enough to fall for it.

Villains also tend to be arrogant, so might believe that they are the only ones capable of dealing with it if there's an actual Greater Evil.

Or the GE might be weakened if less people know about it, so keeping it a secret is actually useful. It also reduces panic

It's a generic system that's marketed as babby's first anime-themed tabletop RPG. It's not that crunchy, but not that fluffy either. It's the sort of thing you bring to your local anime club on campus and dink around with.

Try Adventure! from White Wolf. Get your hands on the 1920s sourcebook for Call Of Cthulu for slice of life details that might lead to further mayhem.

The comic book series "The Nevermen" from Dark Horse and Guy Davis is well worth a look to get the feeling down. Good luck!

how would you describe the best kind of lost city/civilization? I don't mean best as in perfect but, most interesting. I like how Uncharted does civs but, it can get crazy with all the "super advance mechanics for its time" puzzles and junk that always pops up.

you need alot of disbelief sometimes with uncharted's cities. It was pretty balla looking tho, kinda futuristic in a sense. This city would've worked better in a fantasy setting I think because anti-mold magic.

This may sound odd, but does anybody have any experience running a campaign with two dungeon masters?

The guy who is planning to DM for our group is being really flaky and I want to save our veteran from inevitably taking over as forever GM. I have DM'd a couple of times and although my players enjoy my campaigns I don't have very much time to plan outside of of play and I'm prone to burn out, however I have a little brother in high school who's very interested in DMing but he
has several social disorders and doesn't feel confident enough to tell the stories he has laid out in real time.

So here's the plan: my brother lays out the map for a campaign, does the major planning and we collaborate on encounter design, but during the actual session I act as all the NPCs and do all the improv. Thoughts?

I think that could work out. I do see potential issues though.

When DMming, players do unpredictable shit. This shit causes you to change the plan. Your younger brother has never DMmed before if I understand it correctly. Given this he is likely to be very invested in whatever story he writes, and is likely to write out specific details that will not pan out. I have found in the past that my stories get butchered sometimes, because the players want to go hard left, when I planned for them to go right. Shit happens.

I am going to ask a question accepting the risk of sounding like a huge dick. Do you think that you brother can handle watching his story go wrong given his social disabilities?

He is going to put his heart and soul into it. And given he has social issues, he probably has a different set of values than you. When the story goes hard left, you are going to make changes (sacrifices) that he wouldn't agree with.

I'm not saying it can't work you just both need to go into this aware that this will happen. You need to tell him that this will happen. He needs to know that you aren't doing it to spite him or his story. He will need assurance BEFORE you go into campaigns that you think his story is super rad. Otherwise he might think you are ruining his story on purpose. I just know how little brothers can be.

I think the root of this issue is that you are sharing responsibilities. I once co-DMmed with someone. It worked out pretty well. What we did was I a rules lawyer did all the numbers and let him know the result of stuff, while he was the story teller. Someones jumping over a pit? I'm looking up the rules for jumping while he player describes thier posture and decisions. They make thier check, While I determine the DC. I write the DC on a piece of paper behind the DM screen and then the DM makes a descision and gives the whole event color and flavor. That was really fun and it worked out pretty well.

It can definitely work, I've done it before with big groups. Make sure that there is one main GM that can overrule anything and the co-DM can handle all the bookkeeping and player rules questions, and handle certain NPC dialoges.

I used to do this ALL the time with my brother. We only really stopped because I wound up having to move to another city. It can work, as long as you two keep on the same page. Mostly though, our system would be I do most of the worldbuilding and Dan would do most of the "dungeoneering", as his system mastery was enormously greater than mine.

I DM a 5e campaign and had an argument with one of my players and need to know if I was in the wrong

>Party trying to get keys from guards sleeping in tower to open locked door
>Monk and Rogue have high dex and roll high in pickpocketing keys from each guard
>Monk rolls badly for last guard and guard's eyes shoot open and he grabs monk's arm
>I tell players to roll initiative
>Players roll and the awake guard rolls very high initiative and goes 3rd
>Uses his turn to scream and wake up other guards
>Other guards wake up and roll their own initiative and join in the fight
>Tiefling paladin player gets mad and says the party ought to have had a surprise round against the guards who were still sleeping
>I argue that they would have if not for the one conscious guard being fast enough to wake up his comrades to defend themselves

Did I make a bad call? I suppose what really set me on edge about the whole thing was that the paladin player didn't say 'I think this should be a surprise round and here's why' instead he just outright declared that the encounter should have begun with a surprise round for the players and shook his head when I explained my reasoning. I was even more annoyed by the whole thing as he's new to the game and it's only his 5th session and he's not entirely familiar with the rules - he still needs reminders on which dice to roll for damage and which modifiers to add. For him to just declare, absolutely, that they should have had surprise really got me. We dropped the issue and got on with the encounter with the party not having a surprise round and we left on decent terms but I'm still on edge about this. I'm willing to accept I fucked up but I just don't think that I made the wrong call here. Did I?

You should have given them a chance to do something clever instead of first forcing them to roll for combat and then immediately having the guard call for help.

Not everything in games should come down to luck.
Half the time you need to let clever ideas or actions just work instead of demanding some kind of roll for it.

Tough call. I would have gone with the guards got woken up so they no longer have the unconscious status. But rolled initiatives for them after the initial pass with the players and the awake guard, or have had them go last in the initiative

This. They lose a turn waking up, realising there are intruders, grabbing their weapons, etc.

Either they go last or roll init on the second turn.

What's earth like? In what country? What problems are around? What are the aliens like? Are they even humanoid? Do they have anything in common with us? Can they even be communicated with? Are they hostile? Are they friendly? Do they even have those concepts as a species? Is their technology on par with ours or not?
