How do you make aliens alien? I know that it's not really possible to get outside of the human headspace to make something truly alien, but I still think you can make something weird enough to seem that way at first.

Also, alien thread.

> On Jace
AL: So if we’re talking about we as in “the focus of the story,” Nicol Bolas, big, big, bad dragon, just stomped all over Amonkhet. Like all over. It wasn’t pretty, like a lot of the gods died—one god survived! But the Gatewatch went there without a plan, without any real idea of how to defeat him, and got their butts kicked. Like really hard. So yeah, it was kind of a smack down.

BR: Cool.

AL: Yeah, that’s pretty much it.

BR: So they got smacked down, then where do we open for Ixalan?

AL: So Nicol Bolas attacked each member one by one, delivering their defeats in charmingly poetic ways, as one is wont to do. Nicol Bolas attacked Jace first, splintering his mind, discarding his memories. It was excruciating and awful and oddly familiar; this has happened to Jace more than once before. And Jace instinctively planeswalked away.

So imagine a vortex of color and light. He didn’t consciously choose where to go, just to get away, and his destination was the result of pieces of memory as they fled from his mind. More than anything, it was an instinctive urge just to leave that made him get sucked down to the one specific very hidden place with absolutely no memory of who or what he is.

So this is our chance to remeet Jace. Who is he without his history, his titles, wins, or losses? Who is he when he chooses who he wants to be rather than playing by someone else’s instruction as he has for most of his life?

BR: So we’re definitely following just Jace right now. This is not really a Gatewatch story, is it?

AL: No, it’s really not. You will not see any of the Gatewatch other than Jace here.

>On Vraska
BR: Oh, okay. So we do know however that he’s not the only Planeswalker there. We’ve already seen from art and whatnot that Vraska, Jace’s old nemesis from Ravnica, is also on Ixalan. And I’m sure that we’re going to find out more about that, I’m not asking you to give away what Vraska’s doing there or anything like that. Were there any hints that we might have known Vraska was getting involved in Ixalan?

AL: Yes! So back on Ravnica, Ral Zarek developed a neat device to track Planeswalkers entering and leaving the plane. He recorded the assassin Vraska leaving Ravnica, but was unable to tell where she ended up, and I swear there’s a good reason for that.

The other clue came from Vraska’s dear bug friend, Mazirek. He’s Kraul and leader of a very marginalized group among the Golgari. Vraska cares about people like her, disenfranchised and downtrodden, and she and Mazirek became close friends. She didn’t tell him her plans, but he knows that she’s gone and has big plans for whenever she returns.

>On The Setting
AL: Ixalan is one continent on a larger world. This story focuses on the actual continent itself of Ixalan. It is lush jungles surrounded by rich azure seas, massive dinosaurs, and it’s home to empires all its own. It’s home to two major people: the dinosaur-riding Sun Empire and the merfolk River Heralds. And, to complicate all of this, these two groups are encountering two additional forces: the pirates of the Brazen Coalition and the vampire conquistadors of the Legion of Dusk.

BR: When you were writing this series of stories, where did you draw your inspiration?

AL: A lot of what inspires both the Sun Empire and the River Heralds comes directly from the Aztec and Maya and the succession of control from one to the other. One group having been there for much longer, the River Heralds in our case, now on the tail end of control over the continent of Ixalan, and another, the Sun Empire, directly confronting the other on their borders. Influence from the Incans can also be seen in the terraced farms near the Sun Empire cities of the mountains. So there’s a lot of real-world inspiration that went into all of this.

>On the Historical roots
Choosing the setting also meant actively deciding to tackle the imperialist baggage that comes along with it. The nice thing about fantasy is that we get to look at the real world and decide what stays and what goes. Those choices, in the creative for our set, were made thoughtfully with help from our Latin American office. We looked to them and asked them for help in making this not just a story that has a little bit of a foot in reality, but also recognizes that these places our real, these people are real. And we want to be able to make this about fun, not necessarily about drudging through the really heavy awful stuff that we don’t think belongs in our game.

The residents of Ixalan, to kind of go along with this, are technologically advanced. They make steel, they build immense cities, already have empires of their own. Their stories do not involve sacrifice, getting duped by invaders, or any other tired trope like that. Instead, we wanted to give them a quest of their own. The invaders are a delightfully thin metaphor here in the form of vampire conquistadors, and those that invade here lack the weapons and diseases that our true history had. Instead, the vampires, the Legion of Dusk, sail on cathedral-like ships from the east and arrive to a hot, humid jungle, in very clammy armor, driven by religious fervor to reclaim a relic stolen from them centuries before.

I can’t emphasize enough how much the vampires stick out here. It’s really funny to look at some of these pictures. But I really want to emphasize that this is not a story of invasion. This is not a “let’s make a cool place just to blow it up in the next set” set. It is not about one group dominating another and wiping it out, but a race to a single goal by all parties. It’s a race.

Why hasn't your game ended the thieves guild yet?

Are they too strong? Are they in the pockets of the constabulary? Does their code of ethics make them tolerable? Do they defend the city when shit hits the fan?

Most officials insist the thieves guild doesn't even exist.
>>
Many investigators have attempted solve the riddle of the Thieves Guild. Despite repeated proofs that no viable Thieves Guild exists, the rumors persist. Whenever historians search for evidence of this shadowy organization, nothing is found. Witnesses know nothing. Safe houses are empty. Fences turn out to be simple businessmen.

Let me clarify by stating that thieves most certainly do exist. They rot in dungeons all across the world. Certainly bands of thieves work together to commit crimes. On rare occasions there has even been documented cases were persistent bands of thieves have worked together for years at a time committing thefts and other crimes.

However, a guild is different than a band. A guild implies an organization with membership rolls. It would have a financial structure, which would include member dues or some other means of securing funds. It would have rules of conduct or behavior. It would have a hierarchical leadership structure. Within this structure there would be methods of advancement and succession.

The problem with determining the non-existence of the Thieves Guild is quite logical. It is not possible to prove a negative. I cannot prove definitively that the Thieves Guild does not exist, only that historians have been unable to document one.

If a Thieves Guild were to be operational, one would think that crime would be rampant, which it is not. The very nature of thieves makes it impossible for them to trust one another sufficiently to work together for very long. By nature a thief is a rule breaker. Therefore an organization that has rules would fail if all it's members were thieves. For these reasons, I dispute the existence of a modern day Thieves Guild.

can you really end the mafia or any other big crime ring?
even developed countries like the US and the constituents of the EU still have problems with them, and this would go double in a highly decentralized, pre-internet society

"Definitely good" and "asshole" seem mutually exclusive to me, but yeah, books can be written on the subject without exhausting it.

Dear /tg/, I bring you a missive of emotional and somewhat psychological pain. I've been playing commander at my FLGS for a couple of months and overall at first the atmosphere seemed to be tranquil toward equality. Tending to the recent days, I've grown a concern regarding my local game store and my fellow planeswalkers. I've turned to playing a Teferi deck that is mostly blue goodstuff to compliment a group with low combo and stax. The games are very interactive and I often hear things like "attack him" "beast within your guy" "he has five loyalty". There is just one problem. My Teferi is trans. I've commissioned an alter to reflect this and have patiently informed my players that Teferi is a woman. However, they absolutely refuse to respect her.

It's 2017, and I believe everybody has the right to be in a safe environment. When I talked with the owner I informed him about the ignorant actions of the others. To my great shock and internal harm, he told me it was "the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard." I now feel threatened in one of he few accepting areas of my life, and while Teferi is just a magic card, it represents something special about my own identity. As long as my commander is misgendered, I may not be able to confirm my own soul, and every day that I do not evolve inwards is a day I'm suffering in a cage.

I cannot simply leave because I may not find another group, but even if I did I would fail the next person to play there with a non-binary card. This would allow the toxicicity to spread to other players in the store and even the region. I may be able to move on, but I cannot bring myself to betray other players. What are some good examples of literature I can bring to my next game to help everybody understand why my card's gender is not just ink on cardboard? I really believe in my deck, my store, and despite their current ignorance, even my players. Thank you.

>>
If you have already politely asked them to stop misgendering your deck, the problem isn't that they don't know better, but rather that they are willfully ignorant. The Magic community is progressing a lot and you will not have to worry about players like those soon.

Are Evil characters totally aware that they are evil and uncaring of it, or are they convinced that what they are doing is not evil even if they ping the Evil alignment?
41 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>55155113
They're usually convinced that what they're doing is necessary or at least practical, regardless of whether it's "evil" or not.
>>
>>55155113
"Evil" is just a pejorative propagated by the so-called "Good", to elevate them and their gods above the "Evil" and show themselves to be better.

Or, basically, while "evil" may be a cosmological thing in D&D it's not necessarily like everyone will agree that Good is, well, good.

Or that they'll agree that it's actually a cosmological thing in the first place. Most characters probably aren't too well-versed in religion and whatnot, or at least not in the ones that might be relevant.

Some of them are right bastard who know that they're evil fuckers, because this is D&D we're talking about and there's some downright cartoonish caricatures going on there, but I reckon that most probably consider themselves to be correct.

And that's the big thing, isn't it? It's not just "I am Good", or "I am Evil", it's "I am Correct, and [insert opposing alignment here] is Wrong".

Especially given that D&D's Evil vs. Good has over the years had an undertone of Altruistic vs. Selfish. Would you necessarily see yourself as Evil for harming others for your own gain, or would you just see that as the law of the jungle? (Or law of the capitalist market, I guess?)
>>
>>55155355
And even if evil is a cosmological thing, the most evil characters don't necessarily have to face eternal torment. Instead they might easily rise up the ranks in Devilry/Demonhood after moving on to their final destination. So to them there's no downside except those pesky adventurers who keep disrupting their operations

I was at my local gameshop a couple of days ago, and a new person came in with an army. We welcomed him in and asked him if he played 40K. He said he did, and the two other people I was with and I said we'd play with him to welcome him to the shop.

He pulls out Imperial Guard, but they were a little unique to put it lightly. I didn't quite recognize what the scheme was. To sate my curiosity, asked him if it was a homebrew chapter. He said yes, and his army was based on the Gor series. You know the one that is entirely based on BDSM and makes 50 Shades of Grey look tame in comparison.

I told him that was neat because I didn't really care to find out more. He then went on a twenty-minute rant about how that lifestyle is perfectly acceptable and how the neckbeards of this game are no better because of Slaanesh as evidence in our shop. Despite the other armies being Iron Warriors, Blood Ravens, and Dark Eldar.

All in all, it was arguably one of the most uncomfortable experiences I've had playing the game. I'm not saying 40K doesn't have shades of that but at the same time a twenty-minute rant over sexual lifestyles while trying to shoot some heretics is still fucking weird.

Cringeworthy experience for you all?

I thought it was pretty accepted that high fantasy just refers to a world that is vastly different from our own, typically being another planet entirely, while low fantasy referred to the real world with fantastical elements.

I'm like 90% it's actually the hobby in animu form, not a parody.

In the actual setting? Not really. Getting the magic right would require using some stupid shit and the setting doesn't have that much to offer. To steal some general premises? That isn't a bad idea. I already ripped off the help a necromancer get over their phobia of dead bodies bit in one of my games.
