I am not excited about the rules changes, having to face two Lilianas or two Gideons is not going to be fun. I'm not even one of those "hurr planeswalkers ruined muh magic" people, but planeswalkers as a type were limited by the fact that they rarely can overlap because different characters tend to have different types of abilities and it's rare that multiple planeswalker characters advance the gameplan you're trying to execute. Wizards is expecting decks to be able to deal with Liliana of the Veil and Last Hope on the board on a consistent basis now, and while I'm sure most decks can do that, it's not fun gameplay.

Game is set on the edge of a great desert, is more serious than not, more roleplay than combat, where power and resources are scarce and creativity is encouraged.

Looking for something based around politics and intrigue really. Command and conquest also sounds pretty damn fun but I wouldn't say no to just a bog standard adventuring party.

So starting off, there's basically around 4 classifications for beings.

Innocents, Mononoke, Godhunters, and Aramitama.

Innocents are people with no "Shard" which is the source of power for all of the others. They are kept in the dark on purpose, and are the ones that will need saved when shit goes down.

Mononoke are various mythological or supernatural beings in their regular state. Some are hostile, others aren't.

God hunters are those humans with shards that take it upon themselves to deal with issue's caused by supernatural BS, since they're basically the only ones that can.

And lastly aramitama. This is what happens when something basically goes through the warp, and doesn't come out for the better. These are warped and misshapen, albeit stronger, versions of godhunters, mononoke, and even innocents on rare occasions.

Pretty standard, overall.

There are 4 "Organizations" and one tentative grouping of freelancers that Fight aramitama and other supernatural BS.

The first is the Demon Hunter society. This is basically a supra-religious faction that has worked to suppress and hide anything having to do with the awakened anyone that isn't an innocent . Buddhism, shinto, and onmyou are all present in this faction, and their goal is to hide the happenings of the awakened away from the world at large. Out of sight, out of mind. Tend to be more magical than physical.

Second is the Knights-Templar. These guys are basically the western version of the demon hunter society, but with a very obvious difference. They don't get along with anyone, take shards and regalia as "Relics", and view aramitama as demons. If you just imagined the christian church, you'd be spot on. These are the physical fighters, said to be unnaturally skilled. Regardless of which faction you are from, if someone is called a patron saint, you'd be wise to give some respect, as these guys are likely far stronger than you are, at least for a long time.

A few things to bump the thread and stir some discussion.

I know Imperial Xenos got shot down, and I've more or less come to peace with that. But what about Chaos? If there's any faction that is going to put their ideology before racial bias, it's chaos. It would be funny if Chaos was on average more Metropolitan than most Bumfuck Imperial Worlds. Something to think about


Another is having Rogue Traders be a completely neutral economic faction, allowing for trade between the Imperium and Separatists, even though they are in various states of conflict. I thought about having them trade with Chaos on the border, but I figured that may be too much

You can figure out HP relatively without meta vision. You just need to ask your DM for a short description of how wounded they appear.

The 'big ears are compassionate' has it's grounding in the sadhu holy men, who were often very rich young men and princes who (like most men of power) had their ears weeighted. when they gave up their wealth, their earlobes were still stretched, but they were no longer concerned with material wealth and property, and taught and practiced compassion for one's fellow man.

Pointed ears is a call back to a particular mutation called William's Syndrome, where it causes a deformation of vatious body parts, particularly elongation and sharpness of ears and smaller noses as well as a widening of the mouth, in addition to various internal disorders. Like heterochomia it was commonly believed that such children were changelings, faerie replacements for the original human child (and often an excuse for divorce, an explanation for infidelity, or other escape clauses in a marriage).

Afaik after Germanics become Christians, elves became equal to demons (that are sometimes depicted in iconography with pointy ears that like of a goat or swine) and this is after which pointy years became associated with elves.

That's actually literally just because of the Buddha, who apocryphally had previously worn a ton of ear jewellery but then removed it as he willingly forsook material wealth.
