Trying to decide between a daiwa coastal tws and a Shimano citica for salt, any reason I should go the Shimano? I'm a bit biased towards daiwa, my daiwa zillion coastal is still working perfectly after 6 or so years. Mostly upgrading for left hand retrieve as I can control the rod better with my right.
>>
>>939828
Can't go wrong with either. Go play with them and see which one feels better in your palm.

>>939829
Kek. That's crazy. There are a few pier dudes who take it too far but most of the hardcore dudes will be on boats.

I take it too far with my pond fishin but a lot of the time I just leave my tackle in the car and take a couple rods and some pliers with me.

I still need to grab pic related. Almost bought it when I was at Gander Mtn yesterday. It's the perfect small bag.

Kids are a double edged sword anon. They can have so much joy when the only things you can get to bite are little pinfish and yet at the same time, they can get bored and want to leave when the action is on fire. Just do your best to impart a love of fishing when they're young but dont force it.

Am I the only one who feels like fishing after a cold front rolls thru is always really shitty? I mean this is a good time of year to bass fish around here but a cold front came in last night and it was cool all day and the lake was just dead this afternoon.

Went back to the car to put my sunglasses away because it got dark. I kinda want to keep fishing but not sure if I should stay here and toss around a #3 or #4 Black Fury, go a couple blocks over and toss some catfish rigs and shitpost while nothing bites, grab some squid and go to the pier where nothing worthwhile will bite, or go home and watch TV.

Caught this 24" red at 6am this morning on a zman trout eye jig with a zman minnowz in morning glory. Water temp was 52.5°F, but they still haven't changed to their winter patterns. Anyone else notice later winter patterns?

It defiantly does in my experience, if you have a pier to go to and can get some kind of shellfish go try for on a drop shot rig

Nice red. All I got today was a ton of jacks and a snook that broke me off. I have yet to land a snook at this park I've been going to, ironically I've had better luck landing snook at the pier.
>first one jumped and spit the hook
>second one broke me off in the mangroves
Hopefully I can get one tomorrow.

You need to use lures that are slow, lazy, and unthreatening. Not noisy inline spinners, big billed plugs, rattling stuff, or stuff the has tons of movement. You use all that stuff before and during the front. Try, senko worms, willow blade spinners, lazy swimbaits, small thin spoons, and thing lipless cranks without rattles.

For catfish you'll need to use small, stinky, cut bait and chum.

I was going to break out a 4" lizard or something small but I kept on running lipless cranks and chatterbaits because it's late January. I probably fucked up there. Next cold front I will treat it like a hot summer day and run the finesse stuff.
>>
>>940004
I assume that you will lose the hook up because of a jump? If that's the case just bow to the king and keep a tight line and should be good right?

On side note, does anyone have a spinfisher v live liner that they've had problems with? I have two and both live liner systems have fucked up in 4 months since purchase. Am thinking the rear drag seal is poorly made
>>
>>940035
I wonder if Bass Pro still has the Shimano Saharas on sale. You should definitely keep an eye on sales at Dick's or Bass Pro. For that, a 3500 or 4000 size reel should work well and those are often sizes that you can find for cheap since the smaller 2000-3000 that are good for bass and panfish sell out first.

Otherwise Pflueger President. $60 and will last for decades. Size 35 or the next size up for catfish and (northern?) pike.

Anybody like these Yo-Zuri cranks? They have great action like most $10+ Yo-Zuri lures, but it would be cool to find some smaller ones since I never hit shit on those style 1/2oz+ cranks.

>>940043
I mean I know that the fishing is good as the fronts are rolling in as the pressure is dropping. Low pressure is better, right? High pressure sucks, but then stable low low pressure is shitty too or something.

I mean I'm gonna go fishing when I have time no matter what the pressure is doing. Sometimes I make an effort to get out right before a storm and it can pay off but often it doesn't since the FL storms most of the time are little tropical cells that blow in off the ocean in the morning or Everglades at night and don't come with a full on pressure system.

I fish in every condition as well. I don't mind not catching many fish as I take the conditions into the equation. i enjoy the aspect of being successful where others fail. Catching a 5 fish limit in terrible conditions often feels better to me than catching 50+ fish in easy conditions to fish. You have to adjust accordingly for post-front conditions and build of what gives you success. I basically narrow it down to 3 different bites. The feeding bite, the reaction bite, and the territorial bite. What I use and how I use it depends on what bite, or combination of bite I feel will be most successful in a given condition. asking yourself why fish stop biting in post-front conditions will cut out a selection of tackle that targets the bite that isn't happening,

Makes sense. I have just been trying to take advantage of the month or two of cooler water and run stuff for the "feeding bite" because I spend all fucking summer running Texas rigs aside from the occaisional Mepps for snakeheads.

Those snakeheads are pissing me off lately too. I honestly think I made quite a dent at this one little lake by killing off like a dozen bigger ones. At least the shoreline I fish at. The only ones left over there are too smart to hit the Mepps anymore.
>>
>>940066
Luckily I don't have snakeheads in my area. Lots of chain pickerel though. They're basically just as aggressive but native.

Was fishing in a little Brook off the beaten path ( keep in mind this is winter and you can see through the woods very well)
Heard some shit turned around and saw some punk
Probably my age maybe a bit younger
With a grill smoking
Guy has gun in his hand
Keep fishing and hear pops
Not loud enough to be a .22 so probably a pellet gun
Lots of pops
Suddenly shit whizzing through the brush by me
Yell something along the lines of " are you trying to get your ass beat boy" and rush out of the woods at him
Clearly hadn't seen me but still was blindly firing into the woods on public property right by a road etc where people often are
Or maybe he did see me and was trying to impress the girl by being a dick
Lucky he ran and didn't try to confront me
Do they know how he didnt see me
Was wearing greens blues and browns. But I was moving and fishing
He panics. Trips over his own feet
Drops his blunt and I think his pellet gun turns and runs like a bitch

What's the scoop on fish mortality with catch n release?

I understand you shouldn't be dragging fish in the dirt upon landing , doing the wiggle when releasing it back into water (revolving) and leaving the hook if the fish is gut hooked.

But there is other stuff like barbed hooks, not touching the fish, using a net, even not using a non-rubber one, and even avoid taking it out of the water at all.

I appreciate fish, and don't want to be the reason good fish die, so I'm concerned about these things. I guess I'm focusing on trout and pike with these questions.

Yeah, I was watching an old Bass Elite video the other day, I think it was the 2016 Toledo Bend lake (which I grew up fishing btw) and he was a total asshat.

He was yelling at locals to back their boats up and to move and shit. He was telling them that he was trying to fish a tournament. It's public land, they have as much right to be there as he does. It's as if he doesn't realize it's their tax dollars that manage that lake.

>ice fishing derby in a week
>still haven't caught anything this season

does anyone have any spicy hardwater rigs?

I've been back and tail hooking minnows on my tipups and jigging various lures or just doing whatever rig it is with the attractor (like line -> gold/silver spoon -> more line -> hook -> minnow or worm)

found out a few days ago the lake I was fishing for brookies got fished out like a day or two after the season opened, have only gone out once to a different place so far, didn't get shit, but the derby is soon and I need to find a spot to camp out
>>
>>940592
what are you fishing for , i have soe sweet homemade jigs
>>
>>940592
Looks like you caught a nice Bowfin before stuff iced up in that picture though so that's good
>>
>>940594

lake trout, pike, and perch are the derby prize categories (3 places for each), so either of them

I'm signed up with three other guys, probably going to take turns jigging in shallower water where the pike and panfish are moving and watching the tip ups in the deeper part of the lake where the trout all are

>>940596

that isn't me, just a picture i had on my desktop i thought was neat

think it's a snakehead
>>
>>940597
It's definitely a Bowfin bro
>>
>>940597
i wont be much help for akers and not so much for pike ( though i have caught some enormous pickerel on tiny tiny jigs)

i can post some homemade jigs if you want but what i would advise ( depending on where you live) is drilling 2 holes side by side about 3 ft apart, work a rippin rap or a larger bait to cause a comotion in one hole, then work the other hole with a jig for perch and other panfish,
ive even done this with 3 holes
one with an ultralight rippin rap, one with a deadstick and one bouncing a jig and waxworm

ive noticed that the comotion draws in panfish etc even if they dont bite on it
and alot of the time larger fish see the smaller fish and come in and smack the rippin rap etc
>>
>>940602

how do you do that solo?

i'm not exactly too sure what to do while im using a rod, i pretty must just vibrate it around with my wrist and watch my tip ups

can you just leave a line in the hole while you use a different rod? wouldn't it get pulled in if something bit?

>>
>>940623
I use the rippin rap in my left hand and just rip it hard
In my right hand I use a small jig with a dangling hook and bounce it
Small short movements with the occasional hard pop
The deadstick I prop up so it's tip is a bit off the ground and I watch the tip while I work the other two rods

>>940149

Classic topwaters. Only thing with topwaters is that you have to use them at the correct times or they are worthless. But when the fish are hitting topwaters, it is a blast.

Heddon Torpedoes and Zara Spooks are classic lures.

>>
>>940696
I mean freshwater, I have my copypasta in the Pastebin in the OP explaining it all. Just a medium weight rod and reel with 8lb-10lb test will work well for any of the lakes and canals.

Otherwise saltwater, there is a million ways to do it. If you want to surf fish from the beach, you normally want a long rod (8'+) otherwise for piers and jetties you could get a MH rod, maybe 7', 12lb+ line.

You said South Florida? Where at? If you have a local shop nearby or just Bass Pro, you could go there with a realistic budget and ask where they fish and what they normally do if you are thinking saltwater.

And if you get a medium freshwater setup, you can still do some saltwater with it but when bigger fish are running then you will be pushing the limit.

For sure. You are by that 704z fag. He is always at Juno Pier. There is a Bass Pro in Port St Lucie, Gander Mtn in Palm Beach Gardens, or Dick's is decent and cheap as well as Walmart to an extent. Bass Pro is probably the best place to ask for advice though.

I mean if you want a rod and reel that isn't a complete POS, budget $60-$100 for that depending on what you like and fresh or salt. Then get some hooks, weights, bobbers possibly, and bait as well as whatever tackle bag or box and you will be on your way. Figure out everything with natural bait and then you can move on to lures if you want.

Is it just me or do rock bass take the stress of being caught really poorly? A significant amount of the time I catch them, after I release them, they swim in circles very slowly and act dazed for a long time, some times even floating upside down. I try to revitalize them by running water over their gills by holding them under and pushing them back and forth but many times they don't seem to recover.

My favorite topwater is still the Rapala Skitter Pop. Works well for me late spring at dawn or dusk when there is a slight ripple on the surface of the lake.

Stuff like the Zoom Horny Toads are ok too if you want to run over weeds. Rig them up weightless with a 4/0 EWG. I tend to get a lot of 12"-14" bass out of the weeds like that tho where I'm hitting 16"+ bass outside of the weeds with the Skitter Pop.

I have a Yo-Zuri 3DB popper that has some nice action too. It's just a silver one but there is a green frog pattern one I have been meaning to pick up. I just need to wait for a sale tho because I don't love them enough to pay $11 for em.

That shit is so fucking over priced it's ridiculous. Same with lucky craft and live target. All three of those companies have like 2 or 3 good lures. That's it.

Rapala x raps and shadow raps are cheaper and work better. Especially of you get the old models on ebay in lots of 5 or 10.
>>

>>
>>941345
Kek yeah I was just joking I don't own anything that megabass has made. $25 for a jerkbait is the most unreasonable pricing for lures I've seen in awhile.

Lucky crafts aren't too overpriced imo they have a really good action. Live targets are cool, but I wouldn't buy one at full price and they're pretty gimmicky.

Bagley lures have been my favorite hard baits.
>>
>>941340
I like their poppers but no way I'm going to pay $25 for them. If they ever have a sale like 2 for $20, I would go for it. That is less than I pay for those Rapala Skitter Pops.

>>941345
Lots of Live Target stuff got down to reasonable prices. And if not, they are always on sale because they don't sell for shit. I have a LT hollow body frog and a couple of lipless rattlers. Oh, and two Bait Balls. I would rather spend the money on Rapala. And Dick's carries those Lucky Craft USA lures now and they are only $10 which isn't bad compared to the $15-$20 that people ask for the Jap ones.
>>
>>941358
>>941351
I'm not saying fucking punt them like a football back into he water you retards but if you're going to cry like some fat girl with blue hair when a jerkbait hooks the odd fish in the eyeball you should not fish and probably kill yourself.
>>
>>941370
But the post you were replying to didn't make the ridiculous statements you're making, he was simply asking how he could minimize harm to the fish while partaking in the sport.
Strictly C&R fishermen should be encouraged - they pay for the same fishing license that pays for stocking without depleting fish stocks.
>>
>>941307
Hell no I'd pass down fishing over just to feel better about them, the question was more focused on being responsible. If I could do one lil thing that improves thier mortality I'm fine, but ofc it can never be 0%
>>
>>941329
I'm trying to simply increase thier survivability and not be a dummy basically killing them and throwing them back in. Sorry to unsettle your inner redneck however.

>>
>>941401
Why? Do they just handle the stress like shit?

Trout are wierd tho because of how they stock em everywhere and they don't even breed in the wild most places. There is so much I don't understand about being a trouter.
>>
>>941402
Yes. Stocked fish always die when you release them and they stress poorly which is odd because they travel well during stocking but hooking them fucks them up.

Wild trout caught on small flies have a better chance but they die easily. They fight to the death and then people just toss them back into the water in heavy current.
>>
>>941401
>>941402
Trout do totally fine with catch and release if you unhook them quick and return them to the water within two minutes
They aren't as robust as bass or catfish that you can keep out of water for 5 minuites and have them still be kinda okay
Brown's and brookies are more resilient than rainbows
Rainbows stress real easy and die really easy ,. They're only good for about a minute out of the water then they struggle
>>
>>941407
Not sure where you live. But the trout they're raising there must suck compared to most other places
>>
>>941409

I haven't fished since I was 6 but I've been wanting to get back into it for a while now. I've been reading up and I ran through the OP but one thing never seems to be properly covered...

I live in Ontario fishing zone 17, Durham region, apparently some of the best fishing in the world, but I can't seem to find any proper definition of where I can and cannot fish. So far all I can come up with is:
>Not within 150 meters of a hydroelectric dam
>Not on private property
>Not within a designated fish sanctuary
Aside from that it would appear that if there is water I can cast a line but I know that shit's going to get me fined or just make me look like an asshole at some point. Do you have any rules of thumb for this?

I'm not ambitious, I'll start with small fry, if I can work up to a rainbow by the end of the year I'd be thrilled.
>>
>>941433
dont take it from me but start with smaller bodies of water. Some great fishing in even the smallest ponds and creeks sometimes and it teaches you more since you can understand it small scale
>>

im into a lot of music but listening outdoors is not a thing for me, cant filter out the outdoor sounds. Playing music on guitar is fun however, and I plan on doing that if I get into lazy shore fishing like carp and cats.

However if you're just looking for music from your fellow /out/bros:

Animal Collective if you want to listen to something energetic, kind of freaky and experimental, and sometimes very natural/raw sounding and other times very pop.

Radiohead if you want to dive into muh-despression but still appreciate some solid fucking tunes.

Early Coldplay if you want a light version of that, post-X&Y coldplay if you want the best pop music from the last couple of years.

Sufjan Stevens if you want good modern folk thats more about your nostalgic childhood/teen years traveling around the country with family or friends.

Beck if you want all of the above.

Brian Eno if you want to morph into the wind and become a part of the 4th dimension.

FG Knot works really well and doesn't go clunk-clunk through the rod eyes as you cast it. It is far thinner than any other knot I think.
>>
>>941789
FG only works to tie braid to mono, and works best with higher diameter mono (10lb and up is ideal)
>>
>>941848
I used the FG knot to tie a 6lb flouro leader on to 10lb braid. Would there be a better knot to use?
>>
>>941856
That sounds fine. What really matters is that the braid is able to dig into the mono. I tried to do 20lb braid to 10lb mono and it was tough to tighten up but it worked fine. 10lb braid is pretty thin so it can tie to a pretty thin mono line. I think fluorocarbon will work the same as mono, but you might as well test it to be sure.

I never need to tie braid-braid knots but I may give that a try. Always figured that the un-knotted piece of braid would be too smooth and slip out.

You know how you move the working end back and forth as you weave it around the main line? Hold the knot between your fingers and make sure the entire knot rolls in that direction to. It will flip once then when you go the other direction with the working end you reverse that flip. Thus, the knot gets flipped back and forth as you tie it. This action keeps it from bunching up and becoming thick and allows both pieces of line to bite into each other.

The X-Rap line has so much cool stuff, especially the saltwater line. I was looking at a jointed X-Rap yesterday at Dick's and it was pretty big but would def slam big bass or northern/muskie.
>>
>>942033
Yeah the salt stuff is built better too. Plus they offer them with single hooks so you don't torque treble hooks out on big fish.
>>
>>942043
>>942043
Also some places require those single circle hooks by law for all lures.
>>
>>941955
Time will tell if they will be any good (how can they not be good when fishing for panfish). The smaller one has a weight now and is epoxied. It was a repaint job of something that is far older and had caught 100s of fish in the past. It should be more durable and cast much easier.

>>941972
It looks like you may be able to use it as a jerkbait in addition to pulling it straight in. So, use it as a jerkbait. Jerk, slack, jerk, slack, pause 5 seconds jerk, slack, jerk, slack, jerk, pause 10 seconds, repeat.
>>

On lures too? I thought those laws were normally for bait fishing.

>>942043
Ehh idk about better. The bodies are the same. There is more variety with the saltwater ones and they use beefier hooks like most saltwater lures. I don't like using those heavy duty hooks for freshwater when it isn't needed because they are so visible.

I've always found cleaning them to be a pain in the ass for some reason. They have too much personality for me to kill when I'm not starving and fish are easier to catch and clean.

>baby channel cats

I found that the best way to catch juvenile catfish is to use a seine at night in waters that have gravely/stony bottoms about 6" to 2' deep. Start from the deep section and move towards the shore. Sometimes I'd catch 100+, 1" catfish that look like tadpoles in a single night without too much work.

>goldfish bag of baby catfish

Wrong time of year. Everything is flooding and dangerous. You may want to google up some fisheries/hatcheries in your area and drop them a line to see how much a few would be. It'll most likely cost more in fuel to get there than the price of the fish.

I fucking hate snapping turtles. Red ears and painted turtles are one thing but snappers are cunts, especially because they will rip at bigger lures that sliders won't touch.

Years ago when I was walleye fishing on a river, I had a big soft shell turtle hit the minnows on the river rig and that thing was a cunt. It was probably 18" and had some sharp ass claws. Trying to get the hooks out, those fuckers are clawing at you and the line while pulling their head back in the shells. I think I'm just going to leave the barb in next time.

I haven't caught a single cat since living down here. I remember years ago I was fishing with my cousin in Tampa Bay and we got some white catfish but that was saltwater.

We do have plecos aka sailfin cats. And idk what the distribution of channels and flatheads is like. I wasn't sure if we even had them here until I saw a dying channel cat floating in the weeds at a lake out west. I would think if there were lots of cats around here I would've hit them on a Texas rig or other lure with how much I cast. Plus I have tossed out nightcrawlers and stink bait a handful of times at a couple nearby lakes and haven't gotten anything like that.

Winter catfishing is a thing right?
I want to target a section of river that used to be an old gravel pit
Rumors say it's anywhere from 30-100 ft deep in certain spots but I honestly have no fucking clue
No depth maps of it , and I don't have an fish finder to find depths myself

Access is in half a dozen on shore spots or from a kayak ( not kayaking in winter)
So I'm pretty limited to just a few on shore spots

Is my best bet to just bring a chair and hobo stove , Chuck out some cut bait and hope for the best ?
I'm not sure there is much else I can do

Will post an aerial view tomorrow with spots marked on it and what ( little ) I know about each spot

This spot also has high potentials of nearly any state record freshwater fish , some monster fish are living in there

Maybe. I'm pretty happily.married, but she doesn't like fishing. I'd be down for a bro-job while fighting red drum or something.

Damn, son. It could have been worse though.

I agree with 4. The way those waters run into each other will cause some weird currents and make some calm voids where the fish will hang out at.

Also, don't break the law. It's not worth it for a fishing spot.

What lake do you fish at in Texas(assuming you fish in a lake and not off the coast)? I go between Joe pool and eagle mountain. The bluecats are huge in both of those.

My cousin went to dicks and they forgot to change the price of a couple of rods so he asked the lady at the counter if they were really only 19.99 and not the $90 that she originally rang up and she looked at it, walked over to the rest of them and shrugged then said "yeah I guess since it says it you can buy them for that much" so he went back and bought 10

Idk what kind of catfish you catch but the ones I've caught have survived well over 2 hours without issues.

Game wardens are usually pretty nice if you get confronted just ask him if he can show you a good place to fish legally and he may not even give you a fine if you tell him you haven't fished since you were 6
