This is at least twice as gay.

I'd say most major armies in the 20th century did. I recall that during WW2 the Germans experimented with giving their troops some amphetamine\opiod mix and made them just march in circles for 12 hours a day. In the short term the drugs absolutely work but you're basically just pushing your body way past it's limits so it's by no means sustainable.
