I don't even know if her rank in mil or policing organizations was ever discussed. I think she earned the nickname "The Major" because of her seriousness and ability. I could be wrong though. It's discussed in an episode about how the sniper became acquainted with her. It's a very eye opening episode.

If you are of superior rank, and it's on the telephone, not uncommon. Usually if you're talking to a subordinate they should just gather it by the way your talking to them and recognize your voice.

If subordinate, Sir this is "rank" name would be acceptable, but if you've known them more than 5 minutes you'd just say last name.

Nobody says "this is [rank]" because that's retarded.

If you expect the person to recognize your voice, you would say "this is the [rank]" because you assume they'd know who you are.

If you did not expect the person to recognize your voice, you would say "this is [rank] [name]"

Saying "this is [rank]" is awkward and doesn't convey enough information.

actually...yes, yes she was...atleast in the original 95 movie.

her stealth system was built into her body skin, which is why it require she be nude to use it, they of course removed that aspect for the sac series, and i think they mighta removed it in teh remaster, but the original 1995 movie had pigmentless nipples, during all stealth scenes (which is why balto gave her his jacket after taking down the trashman) and when she tried to rip the hatch of the walking tank.

She doesn't call herself "Major" she calls herself (and others refer to her as "The Major").

It'd be the same as a captain saying "This is the captain" or another crew member saying "That's the captain".

She's a hardass and very serious about work, so that's why people just call her The Major.

>Hell even cape shit does well
Because Marvel has total creative control, a clear vision of how it wants the characters to develop, and is willing to change course if things don't look good. Or in the case of Deadpool, it's a passion project that Ryan Reynolds refuses to bow to studio pressure on. Counterpoint: Batman V Superman, which is an insane mess built around the idea that the dark, serious Batman movies are the best point to start from.

The reason there's backlash about ScarJoiTS is that the trailer is such a fucking canned plot concept that has none of the subtlety or open-ended nature of the 95 film. Seriously:
"You're the first of your kind."
"They stole your life from you."
Maybe they can fix it, but that's wishful thinking.

Opinion does not equal truth. Many anime films are very well reviewed and fairly well know. Many of them are major inspirations for other great works. Its like I said earlier. The moeshit is all that sells anymore. Weebs and sqeebs don't care about quality, even if animators and production companies still do. You'll occasionally see some cleverness or nice animation slipped quietly into what is otherwise a trash anime.
And even though the more serious and quality stuff typically does better in the West, its not a big enough market because animation still isn't taken seriously by most Western consumers/reviewers. Often things percieved as "childish" (Ghibli works) will prevail due to stigma on the medium.

A shame really. Animation can be pretty liberating for artistic visionaries. It doesn't have the same constraints as live action, even if it can be similarly taxing.

Undoubtedly its fantastic work and that's certainly a main contribution to its success. Don't get me wrong. But how many people know that?
The Western stereotype of animated film as a children's medium helps. Ghibli stuff is family friendly (mostly) but deals with heavy/subject matter on the sly. Even the aesthetics/themes are oriented in a sort-of childish way.

More people in the West will take their children to see an animated film rather than going to see it themselves. Ghibli is able to capitalize on this. You see the effect of this recent animated films specifically meant for adults like Sausage Party. Mistaken identity. "Cartoons are for kids"

Also, none of this has entirely saved Ghibli. They're in a bad way financially last I heard.

Not to mention by the way, animation is similarly stereotyped in Japan, with the addition of disdain for otaku culture.
Adult interest in things like animation or games/toys is something fairly recent to the public eye in the West. Its met with a similar disdain, but since its pop culture more and more normalfags are catching on.
So I don't know. Maybe the situation will improve. Not likely soon however.

That"s one hell of an understatement.
They look like fucking googly eyes.
>>

Not what I said you little shit, that the people involved with GiTS clearly don't give a shit, just like Batman V Superman.

Edge of Tomorrow is hardly an adaptation of All You Need Is Kill.
More like a decent action movie inspired by it.

AYNIK's "jacket" powered armour was also way more detailed and interesting in design than the movies exoskeleton.

and Mimics were much more terrifying when they were highly evolved all identical nanomachine monsters, that would completely wipe out their opposition, opposed to the more ambiguously evil monsters from the movie.
>>
>>31993772
Yeah, but the trailer's playing it up as if she has no memory of who she was before, while in the original she's a fully formed individual who's been a cyborg since a young age, and has those huge "who am I" questions because of her unnatural nature. They're just hamfisting the fuck out of this "someone else took it from you" shit.

They were basketballs with teeth

Nobunaga is gonna be disappointed on how hard it is to make primer.

We modern people take a shitload of things for granted.
>>
>>31995395

I joked in an /a/ thread that it's a shame Frank Castle can't be a Drifter, if there's one guy who could do it, it's probably him.

on that topic as a nogunz, how hard is it exactly?
>>
>>31995406
The easiest way requires you have to have some sort of blank primer to be filled in.

Making primer yourself is very hard because it's super duper tiny and the mix needs to be just right.
>>
>>31995362
they were like a floating blob with a solid outer layer that couldn't be penetrated by small arms, they walked on and attacked with moving spikes, that it could also shoot to crazy ranges that easily penetrated the UN/Japanese "Jackets" protective shells.

They were basically unkillable altogether, every battle a one sided massacre.

In the movie they just seem like really strong monsters that can be killed at great loss of life.

In the manga mankinds defense seems completely hopeless.

You mean to tell me that if you were physically capable of, and actively committing the act of ripping apart a tank with your bare hands, that your nipples wouldn't be hard as ice?

in the anime she is known only as " major" for the majority, and she often refers to herself as 'the major' and not by name.

Its probably been used like that to introduce the characters identity so they can henceforth refer to her as major, but so stupid americans won't go thinking her name is 'major'
>>
>>31995505
And regularly called by her personal name, Motoko, by Batou.
>>
This movie looks absolutely fucking dreadful. The only people who give a shit about GiTS already have the movies and the SAC. None of them are going to be excited by GiTS: The Hollywood Movie. They know it's just going to be brainless shlock with nothing interesting going on, lots of scenes of the Major running around shooting other cyborgs who have been converted into bad guys by The Laughing Man using his hackers on steroids powers. Already confirmed it has forced, interracial lesbianism despite the fact that the Major has never shown any sign of being a lesbian, they just needed their equality brownie points.

It'll probably end with the Major charging into a room after a big, flashy, slow motion shooting scene and there'll be The Laughing Man who, for some fucking reason, is a Trump analogue and he'll blurt out some pseudo-philosophy before he gets sassed and shot in the face.

This film is going to bomb so hard I can feel the heat from the explosion just thinking about it.

Well fuck me, now it all makes sense. I always thought the creases around her waist at the beginning were kind of odd. It's pretty obvious that it isn't going to be the same practically nude look as the original movie, but I think they could still redeem it if they made it sexy in a minimalist sort of way, like in Ex machina. Like maybe it's not sexy cause she looks just like a human, but cause she has human features but isn't quite human, essentially playing the uncanny valley to their advantage, if that makes any sense.

Damn it I really wanted this movie to be good.
>>
>>31993829
AYNIK was better done, but Edge of Tomorrow was still really good imo. It's a lot different from the book, that doesn't make it bad.
>>
>>31995665
I didn't even know it was based on anything but I managed to enjoy it. It was surprisingly entertaining especially for a Tom Cruise movie, and the main ideas made it compelling.
>>
I'm glad the muh moeshit argument dies now.

People don't realize moeshit is not a valid argument against modern anime.

To be fair I don't think the target audience ( plot twist it,s not the fans) would catch Motoko's conflict if it were simply person vs self like it's portrayed in SAC, instead they had to give it a face in the Person vs (presumably) person method.

this.

You're not the only one don't feel bad.
>>
>>31995558
It's going to be like the Aeon Flux live action, basically.
>>
>>31992513
This pretty much. In the anime she was always called "The Major" or just "Major". She never referred to herself in that way.
>>
>>31995718
Well, that also has to do with how in Japan it's typical to refer to people you aren't close to that outrank you by title, or at least an appropriate honorific appended to their family name.
>>
>>31995406
You can use ground up match heads stuffed into empty primer shells. Of course, that requires an tech level where matches are common (1800s on).

If we're in at least in a ~1200 AD setting flintlocks and matchlocks would be a better choice for building from scratch.
>>
>>31995805
Well, they are making matchlocks in DRIFTERs.

But the show is gonna find some ways to make modern ammo anyway, the fucking carrier has some guns in it.

Also Saint Germi is an alchemist, so once all the players meet up, they'll be more dangerous than Texas, guns and whiskey.

Which I'm pretty sure IS Texas itself.
